The Positive Brexit Thread

I don't think she's nasty - just ruthless.

At a stroke she will have removed all the excuses the workshy, unskilled and those that can't be bothered to train (or retrain) for anything to find a job. Won't be able to blame immigrants or the EU anymore (not that you could anyway if you were honest).

Cares homes should and likely will double their charges forthwith. Can't pay then go without. Many human 'labour intensive' business' such as agriculture, hospitality will just fail or automate. It's a race to the intellectual bottom. A Tory dream ticket.

Really, really sad for the average Brexiter - when reality bites them on the bottom.

What is your personal reason for disliking immigrants so much RTB?

I dislike unskilled migrants depressing the wages of unskilled British people. Why aren't the trade unions campaigning on behalf of low-skilled and unemployed Brits and supporting the government's immigration rules that will directly benefit poor people in this country? Perhaps it's because the trade unions and labour movement care more about other groups than they care about their own people.

But then as we can see, the left now consists of university-educated, middle-class public-sector workers who actually loathe the traditional working-class people of the UK. And that's why working people have walked away from Labour and won't be coming back.

Salary and skill are not that closely linked.

I earn above the amount required to get 20 points based on this 'points based' system and I would describe my job as far less 'skilled' than a nurse.

The biggest factors affecting your salary level are demand and supply of your labour

So no personal reason then. And do you have any evidence that wages have been depressed?

To work as a nurse, you need a degree in nursing and you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You’ll need to choose which of the four nursing specialisms (adult, children, mental health, or learning disability) you’d like to study. Nursing requires a high level of technical competence and clinical decision-making skills. To develop these, you'll spend half of your nursing degree on supervised placements in local hospital and community settings.

If anyone seems unskilled, it looks like its RTB.

And they continue to be supervised after they have attained their degrees and moved onto the wards until such time as they have the necessary experience and skill to do their jobs unsupervised. At which time they can expect to move up the salary scales.

Plenty of evidence if you care to look. In today's Telegraph for example.

In truth, curbing low-skilled immigration can change the economy for the better. Why? Because it will force the economy into higher-productivity, higher-wage industries.

Just take a look at the evidence from the places where it has been tried. According to OECD data, each of the main countries with a points system has done significantly better than the UK at increasing output per worker. Taking 2010 as 100, GDP per worker has risen to 110 in Australia, to 107 in Canada and 103 in New Zealand, but only to 102 in Britain (the OECD average is 106). Our output person has barely grown over the past 10 years.

The broader economic growth figures – and in the end growth is all about productivity – are not bad either. Those three countries have grown faster than the UK in every year of the past decade: in 2018, for example, Australia expanded by 2.2 per cent, New Zealand by 2.5 per cent, Canada by 1.8 per cent, but the UK only managed 1.2 per cent.

A points-based system, as its proponents like to point out, is not the same as restricting immigration. In fact, it often means a lot of people coming into the county.

Australia, for example, has net migration of 8.6 people per 1,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in the developed world, and almost double the British net rate of four migrants per 1,000 people. At 7.1 per 1,000, Canada is also running a very high migration rate, although New Zealand’s net rate is roughly the same as the UK’s. We can decide whether we want more or fewer people to move here. The major difference is not that those countries don’t allow in lots of people. It is that they choose who they want more carefully.

Of course there is a simple reason. Immigration depresses wages.

Total b*llocks - even with the current 'unfettered' immigration there are estimated to be 100,000 vacant jobs in social care and the NHS is also approaching the same number of medical vacancies (doctors, nurses, theatre technicians etc).

There is one factor and one factor only depressing wages in this sector vital to us all and that is the austerity politics of your government, to blame immigration is rank hypocrisy and economic nonsense (much like the tripe you've just quoted from the Torygraph - think you need to reread the OED definition of 'evidence'!)

If there is one thing the Johnson government cannot be accused of is austerity. The chequebook is open. Probably too widely open in my opinion as those spending plans have to be budgeted somehow. But this government is committing to huge expenditures so you lefties will have to come up with a better reason why people are walking away from Labour.

People are walking away from Labour because of its current leadership, or lack thereof. It's quite simple.

Johnson has been part of earlier austerity governments and has now been Prime Minister for seven months without actually doing anything to end austerity.

True he's made big promises but as he's an inveterate liar I'm afraid that is just so much hot air unless and until he makes good on some of them and as you say yourself he has no idea, plan, or budget for doing so.

I'm also baffled as to why you assume that everyone who criticises the appallingly incompetent and inept governance we've endured over the last ten years from the Tories is a 'leftie' (never mind a Labour voter), or indeed what relevance it has to the issue being discussed. You seem to assume you can just throw it in as a deflection whenever someone debunks the nonsense you've posted.

Perhaps I should let you into a little secret...........it doesn't work and your original statement regarding depression of wage levels is still b*llocks.

You put forward no argument, just hot air and bluster. No wonder you got a 'like' from Purple Canary. But I do understand. You lost the argument. You lost the election. The opposition parties are in disarray, a shambles and leaderless. We, on the other hand, are going into negotiations with Brussels with a strong team, a solid argument and a resolve to come back with a bloody brilliant deal. Which we will. There's only one team in the game and it isn't you blxxdy Remoaners. So dry your whiney tears and back off.

I hate to break it to you but Johnson has already signed over a worse deal than Theresa May. He has effectively split the UK. As to trade deals. We'll either get one that means we have to take the EU's rules with no say or nothing, absolute bottom of the ladder type deals, below third world countries like Mauritania or basket cases like North Korea.

And another simple fact. We go into negotiations still with no plan, no idea what we want and with the people still in the dark (willing or unwilling) of want we could have to give up.

As has been said. This is all on you and your fellow brexiters and brexitty government now. You'd better hope, for all our sakes, that this goes well.

All hail our modern day Alexander - off to conquer the evil empire and bring British civilization and commercial dominance to the Continent and the World. I'm sure he'll speak and write well of his own actions; but history will judge if he can pull this off or if he is just full of hot air.

The Greek word and concept of "hubris" comes to mind.....

🤣🤣 Well you're certainly a trier @RTB if nothing else, well in fact nothing else.

I put forward an argument and you have been trying to change the subject ever since. This is just more waffle and distraction from your original and now debunked 'strong argument' - about depression of wage levels in case you've forgotten.

As to your brilliant deal, as Herman has already pointed out, your team of gormless idiots have already signed one cr*p deal and haven't got a clue, never mind a plan, on how to improve on it second time around.

If there are any tears from this direction then they are tears of laughter - I must admit I never thought I would enjoy this phase of the process, in fact I used to think it would be even more horrendous than the last three (4?) years have been. But actually watching the Brexiteers' chickens coming home to roost is proving surprising enjoyable.

Of course it still means that the country and the majority of its citizens are going to be scr*wed over but that has been a given for a long time and already factored into most Remainers thinking (that I know). So if I were you I would brace yourself for a long and relentless commentary on the negotiating failures and the broken promises of your 'strong team' as their bluster and lies gradually fall apart.

As you say yourself there is only one team in the game now - their responsibility, their fault if they don't deliver. What Remainers say or do is immaterial but for my own part it now only amounts to two things:

  • Working towards mitigating (or hopefully even negating) the effect of Brexit on me and my family.
  • Continuing to highlight and mock the stupidity of Brexiteers, especially true delusional keepers of the mythical flame like your good self.

That's all 😀

Had an update today in the office today on the settlement scheme, which I hadn't been following that closely.

Is it just me, or have they announced the aggressive points scheme to deflect from 3+ million EU citizens being able to stay as long as they like?

Its pathetic Hermy!  You have lost over and over again.

You guys are rocking back and fore, wringing your hands, desperately hoping for the Armageden you all predicted wrecking the country and destroying the economy, just so you can sit back in your high chair, shake your rattle and say "I told you so".

What a truly sad picture you paint.

We have left, you need to move on along with your fellow countrymen (and women ) and add some positive input to the debate, the luddites never achieved very much buddy!

I won't back this nonsense. It's been morally corrupt from the start. You can if you want but I'd rather keep my backbone and go down fighting.

Not for our new Chancellor apparently https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/21/smaller-than-expected-january-surplus-will-be-blow-to-new-chancellor-public-finances-budget

Still, since there was never a plan in the first place, and the Tories have long since abandoned even the pretence of fixing the deficit I don't suppose it really makes much difference - and if it does then I'm sure our Prime Liar can simply make up some more positive sounding figures.  🙄

It clearly isnt over - the first and easy bit is over (and that was a shambles resolved only by the current incompetents signing an even worse deal than the terrible deal that Theresa May had achieved!)

The tricky bit is only just beginning and is immeasurably more complex than the bit we've done. Given that we're being led by the idiot that has just negotiated and signed the deal that was 'so bad no British Prime Minister could ever sign it' I don't think any of us will be doing any celebrating for the foreseeable future.

However I think you can reasonably expect some grim satisfaction to surface as the many myths, delusions and lies of Brexit are exposed for what they were and still are in the minds of many of the most deluded.

You are right that its too late to do the country any good but even eventually shutting up idiots like mad Moyo will be a small consolation.

It's not over, there are plenty of things to fight against.

It is quite clear what Johnson, his government and the right wing press are trying to do to the country. A Trumpian/Orbanic authoritarian and dystopian ****hole is not the country people fought and died for.
