No matter what Swindo believes, if we go WTO no deal, tariffs a plenty, those companies will not stick around for long. It is simple economics.

BTW is Honda still closing its plant and leaving the UK Swindon?

Yep, unless we leave on WTO who everyone said would be awful, yet Nissan and BMW have said if it happens, they will move more production over here. Maybe Honda will change.

Provide a link @SwindonCanary

Do you read any papers ? It was all over them last week !

Yes, do you?

A Nissan spokesman said on Monday: “We deny such a contingency plan exists. We’ve modelled every possible ramification of Brexit and the fact remains that our entire business both in the UK and in Europe is not sustainable in the event of WTO [World Trade Organization] tariffs.

See @SwindonCanary I was just asking you to check your sources because what you posted was completely untrue. Thank you @TCCANARY for the quote that proves this. We are in a phoney war stage where the Leave campigners/government are pushing out a lot of Leave propaganda without regards to the UK having left the EU. Why they are doing this we can only surmise, we can now judge them on the outcomes of their actions. They do not need to keep selling unicorns. However, nothing is happening now and we won't begin to see the impact until next year. I think they know it is likely to be bumpy.

What this says is that Swindon will inevitably be a poorer town in 2022. Meanwhile, the government is intent on concentrating investment on the Red Wall seats so it is a town very much on its own. There is no plan to help. There will certainly be many more towns facing similar challanges as the impact of the trade deal or lack of it bites next year.

We are indeed in a Phoney War stage of Brexit.

Nothing much is happening, there’s only bluster at the moment as we are still de-facto in the EU even if de-jure out of it. The potential positives haven’t happened yet (how could you plan to exploit new opportunities) and the negatives haven’t either (new customs paperwork and goods and services tariffs have not been levied) so both sides of the Brexit argument can still run a PR campaign without inconvenient facts getting in the way.

Although pro-Brexiteers may see the lack of bad news as proof that Brexit is actually working and “project fear” was a massive conspiracy, the truth will be found in due course, maybe this Summer, more likely the Summer after that.

Is Honda leaving because of Brexit? I don’t know, but I do know it’s happening in the post-Brexit period that started Feb 01 2020 and I do know that it’s very bad news for Swindon and the businesses that relied on Honda workers.

Britain cannot live on financial services alone, it must retain a diverse economy both from a type of businesses point of view and geographically.

What Britain needs most is a government that can put the divisiveness of Brexit to bed and start to do the right things for the country. I will confess I have very little confidence that they will do so as Conservative leadership seems to be lacking in any moral judgement - but they are the duly elected government of the day so they have the right and obligation to apply their policies so long as Parliament concurs.

Nay, I haven't, but I have just seen details of the points-based immigration plan to be put in place once we leave the transition period in December and they look promising:

Required:

Offer of job by approved sponsor – 20
Job at appropriate skill level – 20
Speaks English at required level – 10

Not required:

    Salary of £20,480 (min) – £23,039 – 0
    Salary of £23,040 – £25,599 – 10
    Salary of £25,600 or above – 20
Job in shortage occupation – 20
PhD in subject relevant to job – 10
PhD in STEM subject relevant to job – 20

Immigrants will need 70 points to make it in 👍

I wonder if people like Jools were personally affected by immigration, lost their job, lost their livelihood etc or if there is a simple darker reason for their attitude?!

Figures for 2019. From this you can work out what sort of jobs and experience would meet the threshold.

Quoted salary figures do not include weighting so, for instance, a newly qualified radiographer (less than one year experience)on the lowest pay point with a london job may meet the threshold

If these are starting salaries then by definition they will be unskilled. It takes work experience until you can describe yourself as skilled.

Of course there is a simple reason. Immigration depresses wages. You just published a list of NHS jobs that just proves the point. Now companies will have to train UK people and pay higher wages to attract staff. You lefties should be cheering from the roof tops that measures are being put in place that will see wages rising for lower-skilled people.

Are you sure it's not because people like yourself aren't willing to pay more tax so as to fund the health service better? The British want a Waitrose service but only want to pay a Lidl price.

What is your personal reason for disliking immigrants so much RTB?

No, by definition they may be inexperienced, but they are not unskilled. And just because you have done a job for a while does not necessarily mean your skills level has improved. It should, but it may not have.

Salary and skill are not that closely linked.

I earn above the amount required to get 20 points based on this 'points based' system and I would describe my job as far less 'skilled' than a nurse.

I think I'll take a break from this forum, there's no convincing some of you that it's good leaving the EU. I posted a good news story about Honda employees and the pessimistic lot of you, tried to down it ! 🎶Always look on the bright side of life 🎶

You’ve yet to convince anyone that leaving the EU is a good thing, Swindo.

Come back soon, we’ll miss our village idiot 🤪

https://www.rcn.org.uk/professional-development/become-a-nurse

To work as a nurse, you need a degree in nursing and you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You’ll need to choose which of the four nursing specialisms (adult, children, mental health, or learning disability) you’d like to study. Nursing requires a high level of technical competence and clinical decision-making skills. To develop these, you'll spend half of your nursing degree on supervised placements in local hospital and community settings.

If anyone seems unskilled, it looks like its RTB.

I had to laugh at Patel's 'economically inactive' 8 million or so who can take up all those unskilled jobs.

I guess work-fair is coming to all those work-shy brexity pensioners 'Preti' soon.
