"The paradox of Brexit

It is one of the biggest paradoxes of Brexit, because most of those who understand what it entails at a practical level do not support it, whilst most of those who support it strongly do not understand what it entails at a practical level. That is evident in microcosm even in the current row about Big Ben chiming on ‘Brexit Day’, with those who know the costs and technicalities involved advising against it, whilst the Brexit ‘bongers’ insist this is just remainer negativity and that a can-do attitude will overcome any obstacles if, indeed, they really exist."

The majority want to be free of EU control and interference and to make our own way in the big wide world, able to spend our own money on our own services and infrastructure rather than bailing out the EU for multi-billions every year for no real benefit.  Freedom and independence just cannot be valued in money terms.

... and as far as that so-called enormous cost is concerned, where is the breakdown, because without that it is totally meaningless. Much of it is the ridiculous cost of continuing to have to pay the EU a billion a month as we still have not left after 42 months which is 42 billion at least ( add VAT, Tariffs and any EU fines to that) !!!!!!

Remoan remoan remoan......... LOL

Oh do enlighten us @Van wink, what exactly is the strategy? I assume it includes KPIs against which we can judge its success.

Good news for the environment

"The fall in sales was spread across all sectors, while particularly severe in clothing and footwear stores where it was down 2.3 per cent in the last quarter compared with the previous three months. Sales in clothing stores have not expanded since the three months to June. Even sales volumes from e-retailers, those without a store presence, contracted 3.2 per cent over the period. Ms Martins said the drop could reflect “consumers are becoming more concerned about issues like sustainability”

Yes, that must be it. A country that has become a throwaway society over the last couple of decades has started to worry about sustainabilty. Within the last few months. The fact it is at the same time as a high risk economic gamble like Brexit is completely coincidental.🤣

You need to keep your finger on the pulse Hermy, the environment was a big issue in the election:classic_biggrin:

People are eating a lot less meat as well, all down to Brexit of course.

I'm sure this waste of space has given up eating meat. Could be why he is so angry.

There a beautiful irony in this headline story from the Telegraph. The UK is going to open trade talks with the US before they start talks with the EU. This is a brilliant move by Boris to subvert the negotiating tactics of Brussels. From being told that the UK will be back of the queue by Obama, Boris is telling the Europeans that they are behind the Americans in the queue to have a FTA with the UK.

The power has shifted from the Continent to London. This has Cummings stamp of genius all over it.

Boris Johnson is expected to formally open trade talks with the US before he begins discussions with the European Union, the Telegraph has learned.

US diplomats believe the Prime Minister is poised to seek Cabinet authorisation to open trade talks directly with America on a visit to Washington next month.

British civil servants have drawn up advice for ministers on the “pros and cons” of starting trade talks with America before beginning them with the European Union, the Telegraph understands.

A UK government source who has seen the advice said the argument for going to the US first is to show: “We mean business and we’re not messing around.”

It would also aim to avoid becoming “trapped” by Brussels negotiators like Theresa May was, and “negate some of the concerns of the EU trying to play the ball in the way they want”, the source said.

“The political signal would be - 'We’ve got the capacity to do this at the same time, don’t hold this up'.”

A source briefed directly on plans in Washington said the US was “impatient to get started”.

As RockThe Boat pointed out a long time ago, a FTA with the US will be quick and easy to do, as both sides want to get it done. I now predict the deal will be brilliant for the UK as it will weaken the position of the EU when member states see what is on offer for countries that leave the EU. This deal will put so much pressure on the EU it will eventually force it to collapse where upon it will be replaced by a US/UK structured Europe with us taking a leading role in place of Germany. You read it here first.

Um - of course the UK can negotiate more than one deal at a time: with the number of deals that they need to do they will have too.

However the only way an FTA will get done quickly will be to concede everything the Trump administration wants, and to find a fig leaf like “this represents our special UK/USA relationship” to cover up the fact the UK just caved. America and Trump do not need the UK’s trade, because it’s already got it thank you, it’s now a question of what else they can grab in return for a pat on Boris’s head.

And then there is the subject of N. Ireland, an FTA can be agreed but Congress must also vote to approve it and the Irish have a lot of supporters there, including the Leader of the House, Nancy Pelosi.

So areas you can expect to get screwed on are - pharmaceutical patents and drug prices / leveling up of branded drug prices - taxation of multinational corporate profits - elimination of renewable energy subsidies, relaxation of car mileage goals & purchase of American LNG, elimination of country of origin rules on food and bans on antibiotics and GMO in food production. Increased anti-piracy rule on media content and derived works, relaxation of media consolation rules, relaxation of retirement savings plans rules to eliminate the need for fiscal responsibility. Increased private insurance in healthcare and reduction in annual time off, maternity and sick leave....

I hope y’all think it’s worth it at the end of the day, the trend is most people in the US are treading water, the rich are scooping up all the benefits of the (slowing) economic growth.

One of us lost everything to some of the most unintelligent members of society and for no discernible reason.

One of us got what he wanted and was after for years.

Which one shoud still be angry?

Francoise will always be angry, he’s a short fat ugly bloke with a massive chip on his shoulder.
Losing everything sounds a bit melodramatic!

Ok, for the sake of pedantry change "losing everything" to "not getting anything" from brexit.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7900859/Downing-Street-plans-dazzling-light-Leave-date-January-31.html

Boris Johnson has unveiled plans for a light show in Downing Street on Brexit night.

This comes as he has attempted to defuse a row over his failure to get Big Ben to sound that evening.

The Prime Minister will address the nation from inside No 10 as a clock counting down to the moment Britain leaves the EU at 11pm on January 31 is projected on to the outside.

The way this is going it'll probably end up being a 20 minute Powerpoint presentation by Richard Tice. 😀
