A free trade deal with Trump, just how many British servicemen's lives is that worth?

Zero, none, zilch.

And even if there was a "trade off" the fact is that any "feee trade deal" negotiated between Boris and Trump will be negative for the British economy. The two things the President understands is weakness and PR, so Britain having put itself in a no win situation it should prepare to get exploited to the max.

Britain. In its weakest position for a very long time. Well done Brexiters. Well done populism. That's some winning.

You can't beat people that like being lied to.

Have a look at the Guardian's video of East Gippsland on fire and ask if backburning could have prevented that.

The people most to blame for the Australian bush fires are the greens. Just like in California, their tree-hugging Gaia worship blinded them to the reality that forests need regular clearance and maintenance if they are not to become a major fire hazard. Some Australian politicians on the right side of the argument are well aware of this:

“The problems we have got have been created by the Greens,” Mr [Barnaby] Joyce told The Australian.

“We haven’t had the capacity to easily access (hazard) reduction burns because of all of the paperwork that is part of green policy.

“We don’t have access to dams because they have been decommissioned on national parks because of green policy. We have trees that have fallen over vehicles and block roads, so people cannot either get access to fight a fire or to get away from fires. And we can’t knock over the trees because of Greens policy.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has lashed the “disgraceful, disgusting” behaviour of “raving inner-city lunatics” for linking climate change to the ferocious bushfires burning across Queensland and NSW.

Yet still, in large parts of Australia, it remains illegal to remove trees from your land even in order to create fire breaks and protect your property — despite the obvious risk this ban creates to homeowners living in potential bush-fire zones. Trees have been designated a ‘carbon sink’, which supposedly offset Australia’s CO2 emissions.

Emergency Leaders for Climate Action Letter to Australian Govt

23 former fire and emergency chiefs requested a meeting with the government last April. The government declined the meeting

EDIT - I notice that the daily mail article references a 10 year old story. And it references the local Mitchell Shire Council as being responsible for fines and legal costs against Mr Sheahan. I´ve googled this council, they have 9 councillors. I don´t know what parties (if any) these councillors represent either now or then, but surely it needs to be a higher power making these important decisions on whether to land can be cleared to create fire breaks. The Australian Government needs to take ownership of this

What a bunch of losers Labour have chosen to put forward, not one with an ounce of talent, common sense or charisma among them. All voted to remain, who's gonna vote for them ?

Not an inspiring bunch, but I suspect they will have at least 10 years to learn the job away from the pressure of having to take any responsibility.

i could support Starmer as probably the best of the bunch , but I’m sure that’s my inbuilt white male bias showing through. Shame there are no Pan candidates, or perhaps there are.

It is STV so it is more an order than a vote you are after @Van wink. Friends who know him say Clive Lewis is very likable, ex-services, good media performer, in touch with the necessary reform agenda. Lisa Nandy has consistently been banging on about the problems of the North for years, so she gets it. Starmer is very solid, give him four years against Johnson and he will look very Prime Ministerial. Jess Phillips calls it as it is. Thornberry is very intelligent, but has too much baggage. Afraid Long-Bailey lacks charisma, is tainted by the defeat and continuity Corbyn is the last thing Labour need right now.

Starmer would be my pick as the top candidate, I like Lisa Nandy as an individual, this may be a bit early for her but being at the start of ( possibly )a 5 year parliament, it would give her time to grow.
If RLB gets it I really do fear for the future of the party as an electable opposition, and that’s no good to anybody. I hope there is no stitch up.

Quite a good summary.

Labour don't need to panic - they have at least 4 years - Starmer is the obvious choice to rebuild and get back some much needed credibility and also to forensically shatter the Tories as the chickens come home to roost. Boris's flannel won't work with hard facts.

In a couple of years I could see him as the runaway natural leader but in any event it would give a much needed solid base for the others to progress, grow and mature into proper future prospects in a serious opposition  party looking like a government in  waiting.

I'd agree with that as well. I'd like to see Lisa Nandy become leader at some stage but think now is a bit early for her.

This feels like a seminal moment in many ways. Are Labour going to start building to become a credible force, presumably through Starmer in the short term, or move to the idealistic left wing views of Long-Bailey.

Starmer is duller than a provincial bank manager, and the archetype champagne socialist. Has no connection to northern, working voters whatsoever.

Labour are doomed.

It's fun listening to the candidates for Labour leader spell out their working-class credentials. Of course, if they were really working-class they would have voted Conservative at the last GE.🤣

The Labour leadership is like a World Cup play-off for 3rd and 4th -- Nobody cares and no one remembers who played anyway 😀
