Latest trade figures show the UK benefits least from the Single Market

 

The UK is 28th out of 28 when it comes to selling goods within the EU’s Single Market

On Friday the EU’s official statistics agency released its figures for international trade covering the first nine months of this year, 2019. As these went unreported by the BBC, we have analysed the information and summarised it for readers.

• So far this year the UK has lost £70 BILLION from trading with the EU27
• Germany has made £30 BILLION - a net gain over the UK of £100 BILLION
• In the 9 months to Sep 2019, Germany is £100 BILLION better off than the UK
• The UK had the worst DEFICIT in goods trade with the EU out of all EU28 countries

The above chart uses the latest official data from the EU, and as such is incontrovertible.
For simplicity we have used an average exchange rate of €1 = £1.15. In Euros the UK’s trade imbalance was MINUS €81.5bn.

 

Observations

Seriously, where is the economic benefit of the EU’s Single Market?

For years Brexit Facts4EU.Org has been publishing the truth about the UK’s trade with the EU27, based on official EU figures. In report after report we have shown why the EU27 refer to the United Kingdom as “Treasure Island”.

Despite this, time and again Remainer politicians have stood up in the House of Commons and talked of all the benefits of Single Market membership. Not once have they quoted any actual facts.

Sadly, we never hear pro-Brexit MPs rebutting the nonsense with the real figures. The Office of National Statistics talks of the difference between imports and exports as being what the country “earns”. When it comes to the goods trade with the EU27 the UK doesn’t earn, it loses. In the first nine months of this year the UK lost £70 billion.

Pro-Brexit politicians could also mention that since the EU Referendum, the EU27 have sold over £¼ TRILLION more goods to the UK than we have sold to them. Over 160 countries trade with the EU - and so can the UK - without membership of the Single Market.

What about services?

It is well-known that the UK is a services-based economy, with only around 20% attributable to the trade in goods.

Once again we must remind Remainer politicians that the Single Market doesn’t work for services – by the admission of the EU Commission itself.

The general election and the Single Market

In this election campaign when Remainer politicians talk of “protecting jobs” by remaining in the Single Market, we hope that journalists and pro-Brexit politicians will ask them to justify their claims with actual facts.

Oh do try and keep up. The Conservatives passed the Fixed Term Parliament Act in 2011. They had an election for a 5 year Parliament in 2015. They didn't like the result so they had another election for another 5 year Parliament in 2017. They didn't like that result either so we are having another one in 2019.

The People’s Vote Campaign is on the verge of total collapse, according to some insider reports. Other reports are more blunt, simply saying “we’re f*cked”… 😀

The end looks on the horizon for the group following Roland Rudd’s sudden departure as chair of Open Britain on Friday evening, after his boardroom coup and ousting of James McGrory and Tom Baldwin from the organisation – followed by a staff walkout – 20 days ago.

Whilst Rudd has left his former deputy, Anne Weyman, in charge of things, the People’s Vote campaign has now completely purged all its heavyweights, with Open Britain terminating Mandelson, Will Straw and Joe Carberry as directors earlier last week. Insiders do note, however, that Rudd remains in charge of Baybridge – the group in charge of Open Britain, meaning their worries over his influence haven’t totally subsided.

Yesterday, two of the People’s Vote sub-groups – For our Future’s Sake (FFS) and Our Future Our Choice – formally announced their split from the group, saying “Boardroom plots by rich men like Roland Rudd cannot be allowed to jeopardise the future of this country.” Guido spoke with a member of FFS who said:

“Literally all we want to do is come and work as part of the People’s Vote campaign. There is a negotiated settlement which was painstakingly put together… Rudd, Weyman and co seem to actively want this to carry on.”

The settlement was negotiated from Tuesday to Friday last week, and workers say is designed to make them “feel safe at work, secure in their jobs and meant we could actually get on”. Security in their jobs just looks like a pipe dream for them at the moment…

Pro-remain voices and conspirators have gone very quiet this election --- Starmer, Benn, Yvette Cooper and the rest all seem to have lost their voices 🤔

Could it be a calculated strategy, fully supported by our "unbiased" national broadcaster 🙃  to keep the conversation away from the very subject which precipitated the election and on which Boris Johnson has them beaten hands down?

And do Labour really think they can win as long they keep talking NHS, NHS, NHS and free stuff? 😀

Presumably, Magic Grandpa will also be avoiding mentioning UK fares are the second cheapest in Europe when booked in advance and far more frequent. First class fact-checking… 🙃

No. The research does not find that UK fares are the second cheapest in Europe when booked in advance. It instances one only route (London to Sheffield) and compares only with three other journeys on the continent of supposedly similar length and finds the UK price is the second cheapest out of the four. I say supposedly because the French comparison, Paris to Dijon, is certainly a longer journey.

I have not done the research but I would also be surprised if the book-ahead prices in the UK for the long-distance routes are as cheap as those for comparable routes on the TGV trains In France. Possibly Bagster would confirm what friends who live in France have told me, that even first-class tickets can be very reasonble on routes such as Bordeaux-Paris.

Mice don't have the ability to rationalise on the cost of the cheese as they don't have a concept of money or bartering, even if they had to pay for the cheese they would still die when they sprung the trap.

Mice die in mousetraps because they don't work out that if they spring the trap (possibly with a half a housebrick) first they could then eat the free cheese with fear of death.

Studies show that in laboratory conditions with the access to half a housebrick mice can be trained to avoid death when faced with a loaded trap.

And there's also the minor point that mice very rarely eat cheese...they prefer food of a higher calorific value and will only resort to cheese if there is no other food available. 🤣

I've been on the dole once, for a week, and been properly ill once, about 25 years ago. My 30 odd years of paying tax and NI has covered anything I've got out of the country. How's your pension btw??

Anyway here's a thing that shows how your favourite journalists con you by gently moving the goalposts. You didn't vote for Brexit because you wanted to put a halt to immigration. You voted for it because current immigration rules are unfair to Bangladeshis.

Basically the tories are now the brexit party, a one issue party, the party for RWNJs and gammon. They get in and the country of England will be heading down a dark path where empathy, sympathy and decency die, the most un-Christian country we could get.

Well Johnson did play a blinder today buy saying how he will not cut the rate of Corporation Tax but will instead use the £6Bn that would have cost the country, to match Labour's promise about the NHS.

That smacks of just keeping pace rather than anything else even when the ideas run out, But to be fair to him, it will keep him ahead in the race.

I hate the idea but am accepting that the paper hat will still be PM at the end of this election. How long he remains there is another thing.
