Where now for Andy Carroll?

Recommended Posts

30 years old and out of contract at West Ham, ankle surgery ending his time there.

No doubt a fantastic player on his day, but those are too far and few between, and his body does not seem capable of sustaining the rigors of professional football without sustaining repeated injuries.

He'll be a free transfer, but will surely still demand high wages. The lack of fee will be attractive, but many clubs will see him as an expensive liabilty.

So what happens to him? Premier League? Championship? Abroad? Retirement?

Might he get a nostalgic return to Newcastle pay as you play kind of thing?

Pay as you play might be the way forward for him. Cant see anyone giving him a long contract and he has earned enough to never need to work again. Can see a pay as you play deal allowing a big club or an ambitious little club to take a punt on him

Rangers possibly not a bad shout if they can agree a salary which works for the club - he will have played with Gerrard at Liverpool. Otherwise it’s hard to see who is going to take a punt on him, maybe somewhere like China or the USA...

Rather an 'urban myth' as any player would expect to be paid for time spent in training, travelling to (and attending) games as part of a squad.

4-4-2 with Carroll and Lafferty up front?

And Graham Dorrans on the left of midfield to put the crosses in for them.

Poor goal rate, but some people must think he's ok and generally always played in the premier league. Injury prone, but on a free. He will end up in a premier league team or at a stretch a championship team. Derby County maybe. I don't think Rangers unless he feels injury is going to blight his last 5 yrs, otherwise, why waste 2-3 yrs at Rangers to finish your carear where?

Playing regularly (if he can stay fit), potentially becoming a cult hero, potentially winning leagues and cups, potentially playing in Europe. Or sat on the bench at a club in the lower half of the prem....

Maybe, but I don't see it. It is the thing now for young players to be blooded and old has beens to be competitive again at the old firm, but the days of marque signings are over. If Andy Carroll feels he has anything left in the tank I'd reckon Rangers would not be on the radar.

Urban myth: like his playing career?

Presumably he'd be on a week to week contract with a nominal wage, amplified by appearance fees?

Wasnt Carl Cort on that kind of deal with us?

I assume from the amount he was spotted there he was pulling in some part time wages from Asda.
