Colourful Canary 0 Posted December 9, 2005 Am I alone in thinking how stupid it is that we still have a "Man Of The Match" award even when we lose ?Surely awarding a bottle of champagne to a player who has contributedto his side''s defeat (it''s a team game after all) sends out the wrongmessages? O.K. so a player may have performed quite well despite defeat, but inrecent times at Carrow Road I have been struck how daft it is thatwhile the team is being booed off for another hapless performance, thechampagne is still dished out to some embarassed individual whoprobably couldn''t give a **** , in a rushed and rathermeaningless ceremony, while the opposition, who may have had 2 or 3players who have been head and shoulders better than any of ours ours, and either won the game or earned a good point, are not even consideredfor the award!May I suggest:(1) No award at all if we lose or if we have thrown away a couple ofpoints - this will send the right message to the players & thereshould be an announcement that the bubbly has instead gone to charity.(2) The award to be opened up to opposition players as well, in the interest of fair play and sportsmanship(3) That we play a central three midfielders at Crewe tomorrow - allthe speculation is that once again we will play only two out ofRobinson Saffri & Etuhu (I don''t count Hughes, who is useless)& our midfield will once again be over-run - wake up Worthy! Rudolph Hucker 0 Posted December 9, 2005 Can''t agree with the general thrust of your arguement Hairy.Being presented with the MOM champers when all you want to do is get off the pitch is one of the best remaining incentives for players to perform. Infact, it should be presented to the biggest turkey in the side so the crowd can howl in derision. On that vein, as it''s Christmas why not present a turkey at the next home game to the biggest under acheiver or worst performer sponsored by a certain company from Gt. Witchingham. Hughes should be exempt because he would be chuffed and would run to all sides of the ground holding it aloft. The necessity for the players to face their fans at the end of the Fulham debacle really made them hurt. Infact, I can still recall certain players look of bewilderment as they went off to a chorus at half time. Perhaps that is it...they never got over the humiliation. Syteanric 1 Posted December 10, 2005 i must admit i agree.. if the team is poor but theres someone really making an effort and who is head and shoulders above the other rubbish in the team then they deserve some kind of reward.... We have seen many times the team playing awful but one player fighting for every ball and running right up to the final whistle.. they are showing the others up and deserve the MOM and the champers.jas :)
Ken Aries 0 Posted December 10, 2005 Perhaps they should present some sort of award for the worst performing man in a match - the wooden spoon or something. That might trigger a few players into pulling their socks up, for fear of the humiliation of being considered the worst player on the field!
Ken Aries 0 Posted December 10, 2005 Apologies, Rudolph for inadvertantly copying your idea of presenting an award to the "tosser of the match". In all honesty, I didn''t read your post before writing mine. Just shows that great minds think alike, doesn''t it?
lucky green trainers 0 Posted December 10, 2005 Obviously a player of the match award is testament to the oldcorinthian spirit of ''it doesn''t matter if you win or lose its how youplayed the game.''To suggest a hard working professional should be denied an award forhis endeavours simply because the team lost is in my book extremelychurlish! To then get other posters suggesting an award for the worst player takes us down another level.Where would people like this to end up? Would the worst player instocks on the haymarket for a day after the match satisfy your lusts?
John Boubepo 0 Posted December 10, 2005 Good point, perhaps we should replace the MOM award after a defeat witha big boot up the @rse award for the worst performer - but then I guessyou would be kind of spoilt for choice!
