Making Plans

Hypothetical but thought provoking ?

Recommended Posts

Here''s the scenario -

Nigel Worthington is the current Manager of Melchester Rovers. They are in an almost identical position to City in the Championship.Worthington has been there 5 years and during this time he has taken Rovers to one play off final, which they lost, been promoted to, and relegated from, the Premiership and spent a lot of money on mainly average players that have not fully justified his faith in them.Their recent record is 13 wins in the last 60 games and generally poor performances. He appears to be unable to get the best out of his squad of players which generally speaking, is one of the strongest in the League. There is a strong feeling with the Rovers supporters that it''s time for Worthington to go.

By coincidence, Norwich City have just announced that they have sacked their Manager, Joe Bloggs. Things haven''t been going too well this season and the manager has not been able to meet the pre season expectations so it''s time for a change.

They also announce that Worthington is their number target to take over as Manager.

To all KTF''s - would you think that this was a sound decision; would you be happy about it or would you be voicing your opinion that they should be looking for someone better ?

I''d be interested to speak to anyone who had somehow managed to turn "mainly average players" into a squad recognised as "one of the strongest in the league".And I would question why Melchester''s fans were focussing obsessively on Worthington''s recent performance. I would want to do a more detailed analysis, and compare his longer-term performance with some of his peers: managers of similar experience with similar sized clubs (see below).Having done that analysis I would be impressed with the conclusion:

that Worthington had a better all-competition win ratio and a better championship points ratio

than all bar one of them.

So yes, I would be a little concerned at his recent poor performance, but at the same time I would hope that the board would focus on the bigger picture and be objective about their choice.
