How to mark the Ipswich relegation

Recommended Posts

It would be nice to have some gesture in celebration of their demise, but to plan it now would be premature.

It can only be planned ONCE our promotion is a certainty surely?

Otherwise we would emulate them in 'the egg on the face' stakes and it would prompt them to match our efforts by reciprocating with similar celebrations of our failure.

I hold this point of view in consideration of the fact that if we should blow it now it would be as big a let down as their whole season has been and they would surely be consoled in some big way.

Remember:  Waving banknotes, countdown clocks,  banners from light aircraft, slogans on bridges en-route to Wembley etc.? They are used to sitting on the 'silly step,' we are not. Let's keep it that way.

Even so, just a mild gloat might seem appropriate and show the class expected from a Premier League club troubling themselves with the fortunes of a lower league minnow.

Perhaps, therefore, all attendees at our last home game should wear something blue (or Sheff. W. which is on tv.) as a gentle, yet effective, take of the piddle.

Wear blue to Carrow Road? Have you taken leave of your senses?!

How about ignoring them as the irrelevance they have become.

Whereas promotion to the Prem helped us clear a very nasty debt, they are in no position to do that unless they do as we did. But that is going to get harder to emulate. They will be no different than Bolton or Yeovil for us.

Ignore them, like we did Lambert at Carrow Road. It will hurt more to be seen as an irrelevance than to acknowledge them in any way, even negatively. I would hate to think we ever became so poor and unequal that they considered us insignificant, lets do that.

Failure to beat Birmingham at Portman Rd on Saturday ...and they'll finally have that 'R' next to their name.

Anyone tempted to make the trip to witness the occasion first hand?

....or further still one of those plane/banner arrangements to fly over Portman Rd at 5pm?!?

I think I may pop down. It may be the last time I ever go there

I nipped into the club shop last night, and noticed they were selling off all the greeting cards for a quid a pop (down from three quid). Was thinking of bulk-buying the 'With Sympathy' cards complete with NCFC crest, and handing them out to people. They could then write a message of condolence, and post them to Poorman Road.

Just realised we're on TV that day. A song for the Sky viewers needs to be composed.

Keep it simple, happy birthday to you etc.

To the tune of '3 Lions on the shirt'

They’re going down,

They’re going down,

They’re going,

Ipswich going down

Noone seems to know how to score,

Their build-up play’s a bore

They just know,

They were so sure,

That Hurst was gonna save the day,

In some miracle way,

But he didn’t know how to play,

'Cause I remember

Donkeys on their shirts,

Lambert f*cking steaming,

Relegation certs,

10 years now and counting.

So many jokes, so many sneers,

Cos Marcus Evans’s arrears,

Will keep them down,

For years and years,

But I still see that hat-trick by Holt ,

And Johnson’s thunderbolt,

Pukki belting the ball,

Hernandez scoring

Donkeys on your shirt,

Portman Road is empty,

Your pitch is made of dirt

No hope of returning.

They’re going down

They’re going

Ipswich going down

Hmmm, I think we could add in some relegation-themed songs too...

The Winner Takes It All

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Go Your Own Way

Bad Day

Loser

(Don't You) Forget About Me

You're History

How about changing it to 'three stars on the shirt'?

Will they be adding a commemorative 'Lead weight' badge to their shirts for next season?

I was going to suggest flying a banner over Poorman Road but it would be a wasted gesture with so few there to see it

Yes to maintain even a mathematical chance of survival, they have to win every game from here on in to gain 42 points, and have Wigan, Millwall and Reading lose every game; or not gain more than 1 point so that Ipswich could stay up on goal difference.

Wigan play Millwall last game so that scuppers most of their what ifs. 🙃

Seems we don't need to bother with anything special

This example of TWTD gallows humour is meant seriously:

"Seeing as it's a rare thing for us to experience, unlike the budgies who've been down more times than a Portman Road hooker, I think I might celebrate when our relegation is confirmed. Im going to take a positive spin on it."

Although they have little left with which to comfort themselves the dig at City is still just silly.

Perhaps the dope needs reminding that in order to be relegated from the Premier League you need to get there in the first place.

Talking of rare experiences, Norwich City don't do year after year of mid to lower Championship mediocrity. Canaries just want to have fun and manage to have genuine things to celebrate with remarkable consistency.

Btw. I didn't realise that Portman Road was a red light district, quite fitting though.

"Btw. I didn't realise that Portman Road was a red light district, quite fitting though."

Especially ironic considering how difficult they find it to score there. 🤣
