unique 435 Posted December 23, 2018 Granted loanees are a part and parcel of football, but at least half the Championship clubs chasing promotion have become heavily reliant on players owned by Premier League clubs. Halfway through the season and the same names keep cropping up week after week - Barnes, Gayle, Wilson, Mount, Abraham, Bolasie, Wells, Afobe - all players loaned from the PL. As a rough guide, the goals contribution from loanees are as follows:- WBA - 44% ; AV - 42% ; Derby - 34% ; QPR - 28% ; Boro - 20% ; Stoke - 20%. The five goals scored by Justin Rhodes sets the figure for Norwich at 12%, (although obviously not loaned from a PL club). Only Leeds, Forest, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Swansea are playing without a huge 'leg-up' from the PL. It makes it all the more rewarding that Webber and Farke have progressed so dramatically without exploiting the loan market this season.
Daz Sparks 1,152 Posted December 23, 2018 I would include us as not getting a leg up from a PL loanee as well, Jordan Rhodes as you point out is from Sheffield Wednesday.
Bill 1,788 Posted December 23, 2018 And have 'our own' players who have stepped up Put bluntly if Pukki moves on it will be for a good fee, loanees return ...... full stop This has been the club's plan, one that some of the 'not too bright' were whining about last season and up to Sept this year Watching Godfrey yesterday he looked like a 'signing' that had we made this coming Jan folk would be acclaiming what a good signing he was. Looking good

A team, yesterday made up from our own youth and foreign 'cheapees' anchored by a spine of Krul, Tettey and Pukki - the latter who I suspect cost very little in relative terms. This is testament to a scouting system working hand in hand with the coaching set up.

It is not the Championship clubs exploiting the loan market but the Premiership clubs (especially the giants) exploiting lesser clubs for their financial benefit (as if they don't have enough money already!). That was not why the loan system was set up. At the time of a loan, a transfer fee should be agreed, and if the club who the player is being loaned to wants to pay the fee, they should have that option. That would stop the lesser clubs being exploited as much.
Bethnal Yellow and Green 1,557 Posted December 23, 2018 Not having premier league loan players wasn’t an active decision Webber made. Norwich pushed hard for Mount, Wilson and Woodburn in the summer but other championship clubs were chosen as the preferred destination for those players. I wouldn’t be surprised if a loanee or two arrived in January, the good performances and positive press Norwich have been getting should help convince a few clubs that Norwich is a good option for their starlets. Bill 1,788 Posted December 23, 2018 I think it often comes down to money rather than where best a player will gain football wise. Not sure if we have the time to bed in 'young starlets' either Godfrey, Aarons and Cantwell demonstrate that we have players able to step up - players who will have been well versed via the coaching of how the first team play
