Centre-backs

Recommended Posts

It was good to see Godfrey and Hanley looking useful replacements for the last half-hour yesterday.

Hanley particularly looked ‘up for it’ when he came on.

Action in the January transfer window not looking desperately necessary with the likes of Leitner, Maclean and Klose currently

out of the team. Just need to hold on to what we’ve got!

Not sure I can agree with that.

What's wrong with a blank sheet

most clubs would be happy if their centre backs achieved that

It looked to me as if Godfrey can more than hold his own at CB, making four very good CB options. When all are fit my preference would still be Zimm and Klose, but I wouldn't be concerned at any combination of the four.

I thought we were a lot stronger at the back once Hanley came on. Godfrey looked OK, but Zimm struggled on both goals.

IS CB Godfrey's best position? Cover maybe but he got the headlines as a midfield player.

Possibly not, just as Steiperman was not best at LB

I would expect him or Thompson to be looking to replace Tettey, but in the mean time he will have to settle for cover at the back

It seems to me most of us are trying to avoid criticising their replacements but it’s clear we are stronger when Timm and Mo start.

Agree with that NS. Not only individually speaking but also partnerships on the field. Tetty plays better with Leitner and Zimmerman clearly benefits from having Tim around.

We have decent deputies which is vital over the season but the make up of our strongest team is pretty clear.

Still not convinced with Godfrey at CB. If we weren't so strong in the middle of midfield I strongly believe that he'd be fighting for a position there.

Yes, we miss Klose, Leitner and Hernandez is a real threat as a pacy impact sub.

Zimmermann was half a yard off the pace, maybe due to his illness?  He seemed visibly upset at conceding both goals, just not quite making enough contact on both occasions.

A ball playing good passer of a ball is being required at CB these days - and Godfrey certainly fits that bill.  Also the ability to get forwards is a good asset to have too, as Klose has demonstrated on many occasions and Godfrey has that ability too.  He has only played twice at this level at CB and done oretty well overall and will only get better at it the more he plays there.

Also, he must have bought into the idea too - maybe better to play at the top level at CB than maybe a lower level in midfield. I'm not saying he couldn't be a top midfielder, but you said it yourself - we have plenty of strong players there already and you would have to ask where would he get a look in there.

Yeah, very early days. I'm erring on the side of caution with it. He hasn't been bad in his 2 matches but I'd also be surprised if he's even moved up the pecking order to 3rd choice now that Hanley is fit and obviously once Klose is back.

Maybe he has bought into it, or maybe he's just  waiting for his position to open up a la Steipermann.

From what I saw of him last season I would have thought this management team would look at him as a replacement for Alex Tettey. He's energetic, gets around the midfield and breaks things up but is better than Tettey at doing the forward thinking stuff. Sounds ideal to me.

I think that playing for Shrewsbury in a lower league last season it is difficult to base any comparison with Tettey who, apart from a couple of dodgy games has been superb this season. I would leave it too our management team as they have got most things right so far this season.

As I've pointed out countless times before when this question about Godfrey is brought up, from the moment he signed, the club have consistently made it quite clear that they see his long term future as being at CB. Many young players gain valuable experience and game time by being selected in positions other than the one they ultimately specialise in, for example forward players destined to play centrally often start out wide, while CBs often gain experience playing at full back. First hand experience of different roles in the team is an invaluable asset for any young player. As LDC points out, playing out from the back requires CBs to be comfortable on the ball, with passing skills more usually expected in the past of midfielders. Godfrey's playing in midfield makes perfect sense in terms of his development as a CB.
