Wing play!

Recommended Posts

Sorry if I am being naive here or dim, but who exactly was the last winger here ACTUALLY on our books? We have had plenty of WHINGERS in the management team, but no wingers.

I have been watching city since the mid 70''s, and that was always the best part of our side, but since Worthy took over, I cant remember one good winger.  Llewellyn was not good enough to be classed as a winger. Bentley, Hucks, Jonsson, Rivers and Dalglish were all attacking forwards played (surprise surprise) out of position! Cooper was ok ish.

Hmmmmmmmm

To my mind a winger is not just a forward, he has to have a solid defensive side to his game too. Ruel Fox, for example, developed this and became a much better player. As for the last winger this had to be Kevin Harper and the last permanent winger? Try Neil Adams. Ian Henderson has been used on the right wing, probably because he was considered too small previously to play up the middle, and this started his detractors off because he wasn''t taking full back on a la Huckerby. Worthy has bought a lot of strikers and tried to make them wingers, we all know who they are. Incidentally Kevin Cooper was left footed and was played on the right while Huckerby is right footed and plays on the left: perhaps Worthy likes his wingers to cut in rather tan go around the outside. As fo Huckerby, his defensive attitude and his use of his full back is so poor he doesn''t deserve to be called a winger either.

none of them are wingers. I think Harper may have been unless he was more a right midfielder

Fluff - if only we had some players of the likes of Fox, Gordon, Barham etc   Then Ashton would be popping the ball in on a weekly basis...

But then, with Howard Wilkinson''s protege in charge of coaching that isn''t going to happen is it?

Errrr, no. Marney is a CM. Bentley is a second striker. McVeigh was a striker when he came here. Jonson is a striker. Hendo is a striker. Rivers was a striker before he came here, and now is again.

Harper - fair enough. But he''s the only one.

if a winger is a player who hugs the touchline, has pace to beat defenders and put in crosses, then Huckerby must be one. He is easily the best at the club since forbes, eadie, fox and possibly O''Neill on his day, who could all do the same. Hucks plays as if he has lost a yard of pace this season - daren''t take players, possibly since the whack on the ankle he took against Northampton, but is classy enough to rediscover his form. In the championship winning season he was on a par with disco, or possibly better. Disco had his stepover, but Hucks has(did have) genuine pace, tricks and skill. If only King hadn''t got a foot to his shot against Spurs last year at WHL we may have gone onto win that match and changed our season. Hucks may yet change our season now. A good crosser of the ball from the right would help us now.

Mook - wheres does jonson play for sweden?? winger!

marney will describe himself as a winger and so will his boss (jol), bentley is a winger because of the qulaity of ball he can put in.  mcveigh is a ? he scores goals upfront but realistically lnows his a winger.

There''s a difference between a right midfielder who can cross, and a winger. many of the names mentioned can play right midfield (as in a david Beckham type role), but none are true wingers who run and beat people with the aim of getting past the full back and to the by line.

Hux is the closest we have now. Steeno played at right back but got forward and put in some good crosses in our Cardiff year. Cooper was nearly a winger but only here on loan.

Chris Llewellyn- tried to be a winger but wasn''t really although he showed great potential when he burst through from the youth ranks.

Keith O''Neill was also touted as a winger but fell over too much.

Neil Adams was the last proper one we had, before that it was Eadie, who also played up front quite a bit. I also remember Fox, Mark Barham and Dale Gordon, but who recalls Dave Bennett from the late 70s early 80s who was gifted but injury prone?

Adams was a great crosser & pen taker, but he wasn''t pacey enough to go past players regulary, so I''d describe him as a right midfielder. Mulryne had the potential to have played there more often as well.
