Racist taunts?

Recommended Posts

There something on the Everton site about a section of the Norwich fans aiming racist taunts at Yobo. Anyone know anything about this?

There''s an ''match report'' in the Daily Express that is 1% match coverage 99% on this issue. I wasn''t there on Saturday so can''t comment on it, but it sounds like its going to be reported. Roger Mundby is said to be looking for people to ''shop'' the offenders.

Yes - I was there, and the taunting was directed at Rooney and was ''you fat b**tard'' - some evertonians misheard the word fat as black, because it was just as Yobo was getting booked for a foul. There was no racist chanting, I can assure you.

I was there too and I have to admit that I initially thought that the chant was racist... I was about to voice my objection but after a second listen I realised it was "fat" and not "black" so I joined in the fatist chanting directed towards Rooney!! I wish the newspapers would research their stories properly before slurring 6,000 innocent Norwich fans.

Thank god for that - couldn''t believe it when i saw it. Never heard racist chanting at a Norwich game before either, hope Mr Munby gets to put people straight.
Not sure how though! He''s going to have to be very tactful about what was actually being chanted. He can''t just say, "no sir, what was actually being said was directed and Mr Rooney along the lines of ''you FAT b*****d''!!"

I''m disappointed in the responses I see here so far. Surely Norwich supporters don''t need to resort to this kind of thing...period!!! Calling someone a fat bastard and then feeling slighted because someone accused "us" of saying the other thing is not something we should take comfort from. Come on Canary fans...show people around the country you are great football fans in all respects.

It seems things are hotting up on this one - not best pleased about the water bottle or magazine being chucked onto the pitch though!

Yankee Canary, have you ever been to a football match? I put it to you that calling a player a "fat bastard" is not an uncommon thing, and to be perfectly honest, not the most insulting thing I''ve ever heard chanted. Racist chanting has no place in any modern sport and is deemed illegal and any fan caught behaving in this way will be ejected from the ground and arrested. Calling a player a "fat bastard" as far as i know is perfectly legal and, in most cases, quite funny when the player has put a few pounds on over christmas. So for you to compare the two things I find a bit niave to say the least.

Yankee - rather like your merging with Ipswich idea, not hurling abuse at players of any kind maybe makes a certain amount of sense on paper but it''s cloud cookoo land. It just ''aint gonna happen. You need to go to a few matches, any matches in England, to see why. Yeah it''s purile and unneccessary but if i was there i''d have been chanting "you F** B******" at Rooney with the best of ''em! When a player is as good as he is and has such an obvious characteristic to poke fun at, opposing football fans are gonna use it. It''s kind of flattery if you like! When did you hear fans taunt opposition players who are rubbish? And in today''s game players learn to live with it, and in turn take it as a form of flattery. And remember their paycheque! I think we''d all take a bit of abuse to play football professionally and earn 10-20k a week or whatever the boy is on.

I haven''t read anything that says how large this ''section of fans'' was. If it was when we sang ''you fat b''stard'' at Rooney then that should be clearly audible on the TV recording. It might have been a couple of people, who knows, but it should be cleared up imediately because it''s really unfair to tarnish us, the best travelling supporters in the country, with that kind of slur. And if anyone did hurl racist abuse, they should be ashamed of themselves, as should those who threw the bottle and programme on to the pitch.

I was at the game with my 2 sons (13 & 16) we were situated in the Lower visitors section. When Yobo fouled Gary Holt a chant of " You dirty Northern Bas***ds" was sang, I hardly think any racial chants would be sung when Francis was stood next to the incident? I have followed the Canaries for 30 years and have never heard racial abuse, why should we when we have sported such greats as; Justin and John Fashanu, Ruel Fox, Efan Ekuko, to name but a few. Come FA get your facts sorted and rinse your ears out. Or maybe it was in the Referees report, (And he was definatley watching a different game to me) Come on you Yellows!!

Morty! Niave, maybe , but totally unnecessary, it leads to competition between fans to see who can be the most insulting. It is by the way a poor example to the younger element of society. There is such a thing as verbal bully-ing and often is followed by the physical type, of the same that we see in the school playground. Norwich city fans who often on these boards praise themselves, "for good behaviour"?

Do you go to many matches Beelsie? Should we all just sit quietly on our hands, seen and not heard? Have you ever been to the den, elland road or stamford bridge?? If "you fat b**tard" is the worst we shout it will still make us the most polite football fans in the land.

Once again we have to put up with political correctness, and people getting on their high horses!

Yes I and my family joined in the "You FAT b*stard" taunts as it is part of this passionate game. Racial taunts are unacceptable and no one would accept them coming from anyone sitting near them, but every true fan should get behind their team and help them, and if that means winding up the opposition players within the law and moral standards then you do it!

Mr Rooney has got talent, but also has a bad temperament and as such it was important to get to him. If using that taunt achieved it and made him miss just one shot then don''t tell me I shouldn''t do it.

There are plenty of fans unable to get tickets for Norwich matches if you and your morally superior friends don''t like the atmosphere - don''t come!

It does''nt alter the fact that there exists within the chant the bully factor, If you and many others who indulge in the chants were really put to it and were face to face with the recievers of the abuse and not in the safety of the stands I am quite sure there would be comparative silence. Remember the Man Utd incident. How come "Black" is less insulting than" Fat" they are both relative to one''s appearance. When followed by bastard, It is nothing to do with political correctness and certainly nothing to do with passion, but it is to do with bad manners. I for one believe that if one is speaking the truth about a person or group of people, then that should be good enough. It is not necessary to use abusive language, especially from the safety of the stands . Save it for after the match and go down and tell the man face to face, your words will then carry some weight. I have supported Norwich for over 44 years and have heard all the chants and am happy to turn a deaf ear to it all, I shall continue to come and support them from my morally superior standpoint. While knowing that I have come to support them for the right reason, and I am a share holder. By the way I dont sit on my hands, I do applaud a good move or a good tackle from any side and occasionally shout when a goal is scored. I think also that if it is necessary to secure a win for your side by cheating it says something about like you. I would also question whether it is within the law as it stands today, to use abusive language as it is defined in law. I look forward to your further inept attempts to discourage myself or any like thinking contributors from coming to watch and support NCFC . They need all the help they can get, refined or *****

The whole issue of political correctness as always seems to be very selective, and you have to understand the rules of engagement - it''s ok to call someone a fat b@stard, a Northern b@stard, a Welsh b@stard, a Yankee b@stard, an old b@stard, it''s even ok to call someone a white b@astard.
In fact, pretty much every insult is very much ok, just stay away from the black bit and everyone''s happy!!

I was at the game and there was categorically no racist chanting (in the sense of black/white/Asian). The ''You Fat Bas*ard'' chant in question was sung by virtually the entire Norwich contigent with very few exceptions. Yobo was being booked for clattering Holt I think and Rooney came running over to the Ref to put his two penneth in. Nothing to do with him but the away fans decided he should keep his nose out and had a go.

Strangely songs about Scotsmen, Northerners and inbred farmers were sung with nobody seeming to find this offensive. Why a supposed chant about a black Nigerian is offensive while one about a white Scotsman is not quite clear to me but that''s the way society sees it.

Beelsie you are assuming malice was involved in these chants. You are showing your ignorance of the real world my friend.

Yes there are viscious chants at football matches, but "you fat bastard" IS A JOKE!! Would you object to "who ate all the pies?"? How about a chorus of Humpty Dumpty?

Rooney has heard it all before and he''ll hear it again. He greeted the chant with a sarcastic smile. It didn''t destroy his world.

You need to get out more.

You need to shout more than "occasionally" when we score.

Your sentence re ''cheating'' makes no sense.

What has being a shareholder got to do with anything?

I heard some morons chanting "I''d rather be a paki than a scouse", though couldn''t see who it was, it didn''t sound like too many and it happened only once. Hopefully because no-one else joined in and they realised how pathetic it was.

I thought we were debating a point beelsie, did you really view my post as "an inept attempt to discourage yourself from coming to support NCFC" What exactly did you mean by the comment "I think also that if it is neccessary to secure a win for your side by cheating it says something about like you" If you cannot debate points on this post without raising your blood pressure so much and have to resort to personal insults can I suggest you go and have a lie down.

I have never heard any racist chanting at Carrow Road...

I too am a season ticket holder at the club, i sit in the barclay, i join in with all the songs... i would NEVER join in with a racist song.... if i heard racism at Carrow Road i would stand up, and inform a steward or police man...

Beelsie is talking Rubbish as far as i am Concerned..

so we call Wayne Rooney a porker.... do u think Wayne Rooney goes home and cries about it???? or do u think wayne Rooney goes home, looks at his 40,000 a week pay check and Laughs at us all?????

if it were me i''d choose the latter option.... If i was a footballer and on a huge wage then i dont care what people chant at me... i get in a week what some of them get in 4 years, and im only working 90 minutes....

i didnt hear anything whatsoever though directed at Yobo...

i know a chant of "we shoot burglars" started up a few times... thats not racist... but if the word "gippo" was used at all, then some people consider this to be a racialist comment...

I was sitting lower Tier about Row 8, and neither me nor my mate heard anything untoward.

i would certainly report anything immediately if i did...

jas :)

"I do applaud a good move or a good tackle from any side and occasionally shout when a goal is scored"!!
Assuming this is not some tongue-in-cheek windup Beelsie, can i ask you whether consider yourself to be a supporter or a spectator? I,for one,was proud of the massive City support at Everton and particularly the fact that it was loud, intimidating and most of all PASSIONATE.
Ok,things certainly went over-the-top with the bottle-throwing and i for one did not join in the abuse of Rooney (there was no racism) because i felt it unnecessary, but please read the comments from Mssrs Flemming+Drury today. Do you think their effusive comments were aimed at those who travelled up to sit and watch a nice game of football and politely applaud both teams, or those who did everything in their power to let the boys know we were behind them?
Give me 1 noisy, passionate fan-even if they do sometimes get carried away-above 10 "refined" nuetral spectators any day. I wonder if Worthy+ the team would agree with me on that, eh Beelsie??

I was in the front paddock at Goodison in line with the foul for which Yobo was booked, the Norwich fans were singing "you fat bastard" as already mentioned. But this was 1.the usual ironic chant of a footy fan (i.e. Rooney, as anyone can see isn''t fat, but a muscley 18 year old with bags of talent), 2. the fans were reacting to the primadona way that Rooney was arguing with the ref for an obvious foul. That the Everton fans mistook the word fat for black is not surprising, as i didn''t understand any of the (5) chants from the everton supporters!

Well !To7 , I agree that it did''nt destroy Roonies world or his EGO, It is the fact that some of you found the need to say it, I also agree that he undoubtedly will hear it again. Where did your chants get you when the penalties were taken, were there any? They may have made Fergusson miss.
To take each of your points, politely put I might say.

I do get out and about quite a bit , I have travelled to every corner of the globe in my 70 plus years, and I have played all sports.

I do shout as I think the event deserves, but without being abusive. My point, its not necessary. What happens in snooker, darts, tennis, and rugby to name but a few.
I cringe when I hear reports of our travelling supporters and their behaviour in other lands, we were once known for our ability to control ourselves.

In many games it is regarded as gamesmanship or cheating to try to put a player off his game.

Being a shareholder entitles me to the same chance to express my views about City as you.

The reason for my response to abusive language is that I believe that grown up people have a responsibility to behave in a manner that is an example to the younger generation.
There has been a deterioration in general behaviour over the last 30 years and it is this that I am concerned about.
It was in a government directive that it would be the duty of clubs to make it possible once again for football to be a family sport.

It is also an offence to use foul and abusive language in a public place, This means that someone could issue a writ against the offenders, assuming there was proof that it could be proven. You could call a policeman over and complain about it and he would have to act upon it.
In life and business I found it was always the point that was quietly put that had the most effect, and in turn got the most respect.
Worthy is a quiet manager and will get the most from his staff by always being in self control. It is a Quality rather than a fault. Don''t get me wrong, I enjoy all the chanting that the marvellous fans engage in, it''s the abuse that get''s to me. By the way for your information Rooney does have a Father and mother. Best wishes Beelsie.

yeah, i also had a resticted view in the top tier, although i got tickets the first day they went on sale and was told they were the best view. Not very good for £27.
I was in the middle of a lot of noise and heard no racist comments at all.
