In that space both Putin and Trump are the same. Neither respect democratic principles. Throughout his hideously divisive presidency Trump had not a good word to say of any other leader of a democratic nation, or any of the key institutions defending democratic government and principles (NATO, the UN, EU, etc). Yet he had undiluted effusive praise for every dictator that he met. The attempted coup of Jan 6th he incited should thus have been no surprise at all given his admiration of dictatorial and authoritarian forms of government.
