The Never-President Trump

I think that all those checks and balances always assumed that members of the political party would put country before personal interest rather than enable the behaviour of a madman, those assumptions have proven to be totally false in modern US politics. What's startling to me is just how far gone Trump's supporters are. There's no critical thinking, no questioning, they believe with 100% of their being that Trump won the election, that it's been stolen by a socialist, communist, paedophile cabal and that Trump is the one person that's trying to stand against it. I'm honestly not sure how you address this, he's spent the last 4 years legitimising their stupidity and telling them what to think, and we're not talking a small minority here, this is 30-40% of the country's population. The under-funded and unfit-for-purpose American education system, so often a source or ridicule, is suddenly no longer a laughing matter for those of us outside the USA.

Totally agree.

At least the courts have held up their end of the bargain by remaining non-partisan and not helping Trump and his delusional campaign to overturn the election. However, rather than accept that and allow people to keep faith in these institutions, the Republican Party have dug down and undermined them.

I have no idea what he would do but I'd expect Pence would have done so if Trump had stood down as many suggested- if he's forced out under the 25th though I'm not sure it would be as clear cut.

I got it wrong at the start of his four years. I said I did not think he would last a year before being booted out. I am now wondering if he will last the next 13 days. If ever the 25A should be enacted it is now.

Quite a thing to witness from afar. Amazing that the Republicans have been so influenced by a cult of personality. What we have witnessed for a long while is a man who appears to be quite seriously mentally ill but clearly this is somehow not understood by supporters. It all smacks of 1930s Germany....people being led to saying and believing things.

In a way we ought not be shocked and yet we are.

I'm convinced though 9 out of 10 of Americans will feel uncomfortable or quite disgusted with events.

we've seen the right use these methods before

"The German troops, dressed in Polish uniforms, would storm various border buildings, scare the locals with inaccurate shots, carry out acts of vandalism, and retreat, leaving behind dead bodies in Polish uniforms.[9] The bodies were in fact prisoners from concentration camps; they were dressed in Polish uniforms, killed (by a lethal injection, then shot for appearance) and left behind. They were described in plans as "Konserve", i.e. 'canned goods' "

they will tell you that rightys are not mentally disturbed

this one is a member of a group who believe that

" President Trump and a secret team of military intelligence officers have been waging a war against Satan-worshipping paedophiles in the Democratic party  - and Mr Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 US election was really an elaborate cover story for an investigation into paedophiles. "

QAnon supporter from Arizona dressed in fur and horns joins storming of US Capitol

manipulation (by lies) of the stupid has long been a method of distraction

identify a scapegoat ............. Jews, Blacks, Mexicans, Muslims and foreigners in general

and you have a ready answer for why the crops fail, the land floods and live stock becomes stricken with disease

we have been here before

Perhaps but 138 Representatives still challenged the Pennsylvania vote even after this - about a third of the total - they must have expected it was to their political advantage?

To me this suggests that the group of US citizens who still support Trump is rather larger than this.

Some of these people had Trump flags and were wearing 'Camp Auschwitz' T-shirts.

I don't disagree with what you say but feel that perhaps we should look deeper for causes.

Many obviously intelligent people have swallowed similar propaganda from social media in the UK - it was only a few weeks ago that we debated in this forum the BLM issue and several clearly had adopted the line put forwards by Trump supporters that to support BLM was to support marxism. Nobody was able to produce any evidence of this, or even show any understanding of marxism, but believed it because that was the message that their tribe supported.

Some of these people in the US were waving signs about Communism.  None of them have a clue what they are even angry about.

I agree, but I fear that we are almost as polarized in the UK.

Having watched this I am now of the opinion this was well organised. Possibly by the Cheeky Boys (Ex military lunatic fringe), I mean why else would you be carrying pipe bombs when you had just stormed the seat of your own countries political system. You wouldn't just be doing that on a whim.

Trump is totally to blame, 4 people have died based on a lie. He doesn't give a $hit about his own people, it's all about him. When his tenure in office is over - and it should be now - he should be straight in front of the courts. although that might cause more problems than it solves.

The worrying thing is what comes next? He's still got several days left and what other stunts has he got planned, and don't forget he has access to the nuclear codes. I would rule nothing out, the man is totally unhinged and living in a parallel universe.

Every single one of those individuals who stepped into the Capitol building commited a criminal offence just by that act alone. All of them need hunting down and sent to jail. No country can accept such an attack on the seat of democratic government.

The comment that Trump’s plan was to incite violence across the country and then declare martial laws sounds about right - if Trump is actually still in control. IMO VP Pence and President-elect Biden are working together and calling the shots behind the scenes. Trump has his goons and that is it. The National Guard and Military will not follow any of Trump’s orders from here on. Inciting an insurrection and very publicly embarrassing America in the eyes of the whole world has consequences.

Surfer, you've always seemed very clued-up on US constitutional politics. If Trump were to be impeached, could the process continue beyond the date when he is replaced as president? Seems to me that everything should be done to prevent this monster continuing to have a malign presence in US politics.

Unbelievable! Giuliani yesterday incited the crowds claiming "we will have trial by combat". Today he tweets this:

The violence at the Capitol was shameful. It was as criminal as the rioting and looting this summer which was not condemned strongly enough by the Left. This violence is condemned in the strongest terms. Our movement values respect for law and order and for the Police.

I watched it live. Bit pedantic I know but it was hanging above her office door and not on the lectern.

Another eyeopener for everyone to see, should they open their eyes. Last nights armed mob taking over capitol hill speaks volumes about why we should seriously consider breaking this special relationship based on common violence and following each others unlawful politics.

One wonders what would have happened if these people were BLM demonstrators peacefully making a point about Republican senators ignoring the result and stopping the inauguration. Trump clearly fanned the violence we saw. Trump should not be pardoned by anyone, he, as Johnson, are guilty of being ignorant to facts and delaying testing,/vaccine roll out, they have both blood on their hands.

First hand account here from the Independent journalist in the midst of the protesters. Really worth a read.  It makes you wonder if people in the UK hold similar views about liberal democracy.

A federal pardon would not cover state charges, so he can still be tried

Worth noting that his daughter has bought a house in Florida, and will undoubtedly claim it as her primary residence - being that the law in that state precludes confiscation of the primary residence in regard to any criminal conviction.

It will be interesting to see what plans Trump has made in regard to future charges. Ghislaine Maxwell has been held in custody to stop her from legging it' - though I cannot think of any country that would offer Trump asylum

...... bar those with a very strong anti US stance- Libya, Iran and North Korea spring to mind 😋

Heard the same this morning. They are going to just try and run time out for the next couple of weeks according to an American journalist on BBC earlier.

But Gump cannot realistically show his face for a long, long time. Even he isn't that vain. Pence is going to have to stand in for him. And I doubt he will carry out any of Gumps orders anymore.

Wow.

BBC pointing out Johnson is condemning the actions, not Trump, whereas others outside the G whatever it is are condemning Trump.

Would love to see some of those tweets Farage alledgedly hastily removed last night.
