Why not just agree that a lot of dictatorships of all colours were authoritarian and just move on.....?

No. In this case RTB's blatant dishonest mangling of history needs calling out.

He has expressed his opinion, you have expressed yours.  Everyone else can read the comments and see which they prefer.

Honestly, this is not healthy for any of you.

Because it's not an opinion. It's a lie. And truth matters.

His opinion is utterly false. In fact it's not even an opinion just a dreadful piece of history rewriting. There should be no preference about it. It is false and should not be on this forum. Full stop.

For god's sake, you're entitled to your own opinions but you're peddling utter horse**** here, and I suspect you know that full well.

The Nazis were not socialists. They did not pursue Socialist goals or ideals. The fact it is in the name of the party is simply a nod to the effectiveness of their propaganda machine, and their understanding of how to sell their message to the working class. They were in fact Totalitarian, authoritarian and fascist - literally the polar opposite of socialist.

Name me 3 policies pursued by the Nazis after 1934 that you think demonstrate socialist ideals... you can't, can you?

Even the Encyclopaedia Britannica says you are talking **** https://www.britannica.com/story/were-the-nazis-socialists

If you genuinely think they were socialist, you are thick as mince. If you don't, then why not grow up and enter reasoned debate instead of keep peddling this demonstrable horse ****?

KIO, you are hoping for way too much. After all, this was the poster who was stupid enough to think it clever to accuse both of us of  being anti-semites. Not only that but to double-down by equating us with those who had helped create the wave of anti-semitism that swept over Hitler's Germany. When reading RTB's posts it is best to think of him as the member of the street gang that the other kids – totally unironically – call ‘Prof’ or ‘Brains’, on the basis that he scraped one ‘O-Level’.

Yes! if I remember correctly you could still get an O-level in woodwork in those days

I'm not whining, I have no interest in debating this with people called 'rock the boat' and 'horsefly'.

I do, however, honestly believe that this constant arguing and aggression and the needing to get the last word in  is really not healthy and, strange as it sounds, I have an odd affection for some of you guys.

I'll leave you to it.

Basically all you do is come along now and again, make some contentious point, then tell people that they should stop arguing. Your patronising attitude is not welcome and carries absolutely no authority. None of us here is obliged to post, so we do so of our own free will. We don't need your permission, nor do we desire your concern or affection. If you don't like what's going on in the threads don't visit them and don't post your patronising tosh.

Your words. Have you ever bothered taking your own advice so generously given to the rest of us?

A lot of really butt-hurt people on here tonight. Facts don't care about your feelings. And neither do I.

So you've copy and pasted a whole load of claptrap that Hitler SAID he was a socialist. You have failed to identify even one socialist policy the Nazis pursued after 1934, let alone 3. So Hitler (and Goebbels) saying he was a socialist, but not behaving like a socialist kind of fits neatly with it just being lip service to keep the working class onside, and doesn't fit your espousals at all. Hitler also said that he wouldn't annexe Austria and invade Poland - are we now going to rewrite those events out of history because he said he wouldn't? What Hitler said and did were very different things and I'm struggling with how that is somehow unknown to you 80+ years after the fact.

Rather than cherry pick one article that you think supports your argument, even though it really doesn't in any kind of depth, merely in a superficial sense, why not look at the consensus of almost every historian who has written on the subject. The Nazis were not socialists in any meaningful sense. They had no socialist policies. They were master propagandists.

All the points you raise are answered in the Independent article.

Josef Goebbels, 16 June 1941,  "Der echte Sozialismus".

You're basing your whole thesis on one article from over ten years ago?

Sorry. Over 20 years ago.

Yes, completely agree with you.

Whilst the N-azi party had Socialist in the title, the new name was decided by the executive committee in 1920 a few months after Hitler joined the party, and Hitler was opposed to having Socialist in the party name.

In 1934 in the Night of the Long Knives Hitler purged his political rivals including the left leaning radicals of the N-azi party like Rohm and Strasser. Rohm, who advocated redistribution of wealth and wanted control of the army was disposed of to gain the army's support. But as you say Hitler still paid lip-service to keep the support of the rank and file.

FFS have you not learned yet that cutting and pasting conspiracy theories published on social media DOES NOT COUNT AS EVIDENCE. That is why judges in all the states (many of them conservatives appointed by Republican politicians) are throwing out all the cases being brought to court by Trump cronies. As the judges keep pointing out, they want to see evidence of voter fraud and not wild conspiritorial speculation.  It's why so many Trump appointed legal teams are withdrawing from cases because they can't find any evidence for his claims. That is why Trump has had to give control of the legal suits to the utterly incompetent Rudy Giuliani. That is why Trumpki hasn't won a case.

"Since being asked to take over management of the legal efforts to challenge election results in battleground states, Mr Giuliani has overseen several failed court cases and the exit of other lawyers." (https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/giuliani-denies-asking-for-20-000-a-day-to-handle-trump-campaign-legal-challenges/ar-BB1b6Ixq?ocid=msedgntp)

"Pennsylvania's attorney general said that Rudy Giuliani's court performance on Tuesday - his first time arguing before a judge in almost 30 years - was "sad to watch", as Donald Trump's desperate attempts to argue voter fraud appeared to reach a crescendo." (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election-2020/pennsylvania-rudy-giuliani-court-sad-b1725043.html)

You don't need patience old boy. The results are in. And every court case is being thrown out. Stop embarrassing yourself by perpetuating tin-hat conspiracy theories and attend to the FACTS. But if you're so confident of a Trump victory I'll bet you £1000 that Biden's victory is confirmed (money to go to CSF).

Nine weeks until sanity prevails - Biden / Harris ticket brings professional management back to US public affairs; what they can achieve will be down to whether the Republicans retain control of the Senate, so all eyes are on Georgia. Both of the Republican Senators fighting to retain their seats are credibly accused of insider trading - selling stocks based on Senate privileged information, i.e. both are corrupt as hell.

And throw in Linsey Graham attempts at election interference ... fun times, but at least “ding ding the witch is dead” we won’t have Donald, Melania, Ivanka and Jarred around anymore.
