In contrast to the bombast and militarization, here is a voice of calm and reason.

Much will depend on how this situation is seen in te run up to the election

Is Trump the required leader as someone who took a firm control and stood up to the protestors

or will he be seen as the architect of those  protests and was then unable to pull the country together

I suspect it will be the latter, and it will do for him

People are angry for a reason. It's not like you're just born angry. You're angry because you live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win.

Amen

If Joey Barton thinks this about you then you have to seriously reevaluate your life decisions.

(Contains the strongest of swearwords.)

Funny how things always  revert back to Corbyn and the IRA. Funny how people who slagged off the IRA applaud the protesters in Hong Kong. Not for me to say who is right or wrong. Just that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
But agree with the wrong one and you are a looney leftie.

This is why the forces of light will win. The crowds are getting even bigger, as well as going global, and very importantly marching on peacefully. AG Barr, on behalf of the President, may send the goons in again to attack the much larger crowd that has gathered in Washington DC today, but even he must now know their time in charge is up (via the Nov election) if their intimidation tactics fail.

A Los Angeles march is a continuous stream of people timed at over FIVE HOURS long ... and still going.

🤣

"President Trump said "it was a false report" that he was taken to the White House's underground bunker Friday night. He insists it was "more for an inspection."

He was wallpapering the landing.

Now Trump says he didn't know he was posing for photos when he had them tear gas the crowd to clear the area. It was just to talk to the Troops.

I think the Defense Secretary said that, but the point is well taken. Their game is up, and they know it. It’s excuses and distancing now, but the hard core - AG Barr and Miller and Trump’s children - will go down with this ship.

Although Republican Senators have refused to condemn any action of the President, what is noticeable is the Vice President is missing, is this the Republican Party insurance policy in action? To encourage Trump to resign and Pence will pardon him for any Federal crimes?

The US will need a new Defence Secretary. The incumbent doesn't believe it is correct to use them against protesters.

Yes some serious backtracking going on from The Defense Secretary now. I suspect that the Armed Forces heads had a word in his ear.

He does not support use of the Insurrection Act.

He says the “national guard” did not fire “rubber bullets or tear gas” at the protestors. That’s a very carefully worded statement as it’s on video - so is his quibble “it wasn’t the National Guard” or “the bullets used were not rubber” or “the gas used was not tear gas”

He is currently being questioned by the press about the veracity of his statements and how he could not know what was going on, but it’s clear he’s laying responsibility for both the decision and the action at the feet of Attorney General William Barr.

Whatever his reasons for saying these things at this time it’s a clear break from the President’s words and bombast.

That’s a good sign. Let’s see if he follows up.

I see Trump’s latest press officer has compared his photo-op at the church with Churchill’s visits to the East End to inspect bomb damage during the Blitz. Funnily enough I don’t remember tear gas having to be used to clear the area of protestors so Churchill could walk through unmolested...

Very true 🙂  and in the meantime it was announced the troops will go back to barracks - although that order was later rescinded -  and the previous Secretary of Defense has posted a blistering attack on the President. Looks like the military are not going to be playing this game any more. Now veterans want the Defense Secretary's head on a plate for abject cowardice in the face of political pressure.

So there is a major split, a few loyalist supporters of the President who control Federal police forces can deploy them to Washington DC, but to no States unless that State's Governor asks. Governors control their own National Guard forces, but the Florida Governor, a very big Trump supporter, has sent 500 hundred of his own National Guard to Washington D.C. Whether he has the actual authority for that, I don't know, maybe he can as it is not another State, whether if they are ordered to do anything while there they will obey, I also don't know.

But a momentous day, and a good day for America.

Oh and former President Obama gave a great speech to day too.... so cue an overnight tweet storm (again, what's new eh?)

This is Washington DC tonight - outside the Trump Hotel as the "people's house" White House complex is barricaded behind an 8 ft fence to "protect it from rioters" I assume. And Lincoln Nebraska.... the real America that I know and have come to love is showing up.

I wonder when the vigilantes will turn up? The ones who Trump will allow to oppose the "terrorists" during their protests. A flatbed of good ole boys with their automatic weapons (real Americans) would be his preference.

The lying is just so weirdly pathological with him at this point.

Yesterday it was 'I didn't hide in the bunker, I just went to see what it looks like' today it is 'I fired Matis (he resigned) and gave him the nickname 'Mad Dog' (not true, he's been called that by people since 2004).'

Just so pointless.

And who is Charlie Kirk Surfer? Not another love child?

In America, there is a very profitable business in being a right wing nutcase, you'll be paid very well for spouting off dangerous nonsense. Which is what you hear the right wing rabbiting on about "George Soros" as they know their "intellectual thinkers" are being paid by rich men and organizations (too). There's at least a dozen of them. Most of them will explicitly state they are a follower of Jesus, as it's an important statement to make for the con to succeed, but they may be Christian In Name Only - that's a play of the slur against formerly main stream Republicans who have not embraced the recent rightward lurch are RINOs - Republican In Name Only - and so can be ignored.

As for Charlie Kirk, he's the founder of Turning Point USA. In theory it is set up to persuade college students to follow Conservative principles, and reject Liberalism.

CBS News has described the organization as a far-right organization that is "shunned or at least ignored by more established conservative groups in Washington, but embraced by many Trump supporters"

There is a separate discussion here about American media after Ronald Reagan killed off the "Fairness Doctrine" that controlled media output i.e. it went full "free speech" and no longer any requirement for balance in coverage.

Also there was a major consolidation of ownership of TV and especially AM radio in the past decades, now there is something obvious if you drive across America. As soon as you are out of a major metro area the only radio stations that you can get are AM, and the only programming that you will get are - Country music, Right Wing Talk shows and Evangelical Christian lectures / appeals for money. So this is the "media culture" must of "red America" experiences. On a map it is the vast majority of America in terms of population share it's well under a half. But it does lead to a n opportunity to exploit a big disconnect between "socialist cities" and "conservative countryside"

Back to people like Charlie Kirk.

Their finance very often comes from syndicated talk shows and for some cable TV. Many have cycled through Fox News. As costs are low to run such shows they generate a lot of cash, or there are rich people who can avoid election financing rules but funding these guys, you no longer need to buy a newspaper which was the traditional way to get your views across. These guys often churn out books, who buys them though is questionable, I know the Republican Party buys up a lot as gifts.

What's interesting is that most of these commentators who "speak for middle America" are from New York, so like Dominic C*mming's this "in touch with the common people" pitch is just shtick.

Then there are people who have gone off the deep end: for example former New York mayor Guiliani ... Piers has come back from the edge himself I think 🙂 Funny interaction from the morning... however remember this is the guy trying to find "evidence" of "collusion" by the Ukrainians and Democratic candidate Joe Biden.... so more proof that money corrupts.

Here's hoping that Twitter keep this up.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-52923022

Twitter has accused the US president of making false claims, in one of the app's own articles covering the news.

The move - which effectively accuses the leader of lying - refers to a tweet by Donald Trump about his first defence secretary.

Mr Trump had tweeted that he had given James Mattis the nickname "Mad Dog" and later fired him.

But Twitter's article says that the former general resigned, and his nickname preceded Trump's presidency.
