Flavour of the moment, Carried to Dust by Calexico.

What an amazing sound they have, Mexican brass section comes to mind.
Interesting band they are. Haven''t listened to much of their work, but you''ve prompted me to re-visit their work. From memory, i particularly liked ''Two Silver Trees''; just got a little lost in all the music they''ve done. Will be giving ''Carried to Dust'' a proper listen. [Y]

As for what i''ve been listening to recently, i''ve been obsessively listening to ''Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros'' debut album ''Up From Below''. Of a similar breed to Arcade Fire, but with a quirky Southern State kind of twist to them. Speaking of Arcade Fire, i rate Edward Sharpe enough to go so far to say they share a podium with them, Beirut and The National as the best Indie Rock music to come out of America in the past decade (only by my own estimations of course).A really solid effort overall, with some real gems...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0RQnGhxZzghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buQpcpQqdKo (starts 1:43)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjFaenf1T-Yhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzniLUP37bghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtH8m_i8O7k-Also been listening to some more low key artists like ''Matthew And The Atlas''. An English folk group that have been supporting Mumford & Sons on their American tour. The main singer has an uncannily similar voice to Ray LaMontagne, they are by all means a class act, and at the risk of sounding presumptuous, i think they may just be up your street Christopher...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFf4Dk3Hi_whttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4WFfmE73Sw&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c4oeLA92_4&feature=related-''To Kill A King'' - Another small-time band that have caught my eye...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4C6CZM_HbA&feature=related

Thanks John. Good stuff. Finally caught up with it this morning. Last night I was enjoying Sword Of Honour. For the first time after many years rambling round NT country houses I saw a "Thunder Box" for the fiirst time.A classic piece of travelling kit for discerning gentlemen.Last summer I enjoyed a long evening at a sort of charity event at the Brisley Bell. A young girl had recently moved intoa nearby village and was trying to get her music going. Like BellowHeads there were more instruments than players. She was an elfin like fiddle/violinist. There was klezmar, solo vocal, sea shanties, everything. I think they mostly played for the beer.Which brings me onto another ramble. Yesterday outside the "Agricultural" pub on the corner of Liverpool Road and Chapel Street Market. N1.There was a young girl playng a Ukelele and singing nicely. Just sitting cross legged on the pavement. It brightened up my day. From her thanks to my handful of change she was American or Canadian. The pub used to be the meeting place for Socialist Workers who would ,after sufficient drink march to the Angel to confront BNP chaps who had been similarly infusing at another haunt. They would hurl abuse at each other from opposite sides of the road for an hour or so and then head off for anotherpint or two. Job done "Glory Days". I preferred the girl.!Christopher.

Interesting stuff Christopher. Pleasant to think one would now sooner hear the musings of a siren than the vitriolic obscenities of a muttonhead in times gone by when at the bar. When folk comes to the fold, and the likes of Dylan and Springsteen inspire, it''s a joy to see people pick up their guitars and howl their heartache to crowds for our benefit.Speaking of Bruce, twas a brilliant link you posted. Bit of a novice when it comes to his music, but ''Atlantic City'' will always pull my heartstrings.

It''s hard to be the best female singer these days, Herman. Nice girl. LykkeLi .Still it''s a mountain to climb.Ella, Hynde, Janis, Juliet Turner who fronted for Dylan some years ago.  This one might be interesting.I have 2 record players, London and Norfolk and I often play this one by Dorris Henderson and John Renbournwhen the fire is lit on an autumn evening in Norfolk. It seems from looking it up to post it is a collector''s item. Do I flog it?I have enjoyed it for almost 40 years so I guess the kids will offload it and another load of dosh is wasted by the exchequor.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EpkbNcjTjU&feature=related.There are many links to other sessions. First time I have googled and I am still moved.ce

The ''65 LP There You Go is worth £200

The ''67 LP Watch the Stars is worth £250, according to the 2010 Rare Record Price Guide, although I have to say that is the price you would pay a dealer for a mint copy. If you were selling a mint copy the general rule of thumb is be prepred to accept a third to a half of that value. Unless you have something mega rare - which I do!!

I was quite surprised at the prices.... I suppose it is best that I have a nice meal out on the proceeds than that it ends up in a house clearance skip!.Snybarb mentioned that there is not much point in being the richest bloke in the graveyard. It is unlikely to attract mint condition status. But as I am deperately trying to get rid of a lifetime of accumulation, I may follow that path. After I have copied it of course!Mega rare...???.ce

I have an acetate by Freddie Mercury.

He brought out the old Beach Boys song ''I Can Hear Music'' under the name of Larry Lurex (Gary Glitter sound alike?), just before Queen got into the studios. It''s a white Trident Studios hand written label. Some guy has offered me £1200 but (without trying to sound too greedy) I think it''s worth a lot more!

the sounds of birds chirping outside my window, think they''ve nested literally in the tree above my window

Birds seem to find a place to nest in the most strange places. A blackbird reared 3 chicks in a bit of honeysuckle 6 inches above my front door this spring.Every time I went in or out they would go berserk thinking food was about to be delivered.Queen were in the news this week with a lost TOTP performance being discovered on VHSin a clear out. So yours W. would be on the same level of interest ce

For anyone who cares for Beirut, the date for which their new album will be unveiled to us here mere mortals has been decreed...http://www.contactmusic.com/press.nsf/release/beirut-announce-details-of-new-album-the-rip-tideAnd for any tantalized taste buds, i''ve searched the darkest corners of Youtube for a few tasters (i will quite literally not stop at anything - so long as it is not revision)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rS1FigMwtQ&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd6Cm1p4c20&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WdmTNenjfA&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi6sEODVwFQ&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Qr4G3hAv8&feature=related

What happened to jazz ? Does no one under 50 listen these days to Roland Kirk , Charlie Mingus , Miles Davis. All you get now is the dreadful Jamie Callum tinkering away.

Listen to a legend:

Charlie Mingus is still one of my all time greatest.

"Making the simple complicated is commonplace;making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, thats creativity"

Spot on.

I am afraid I never got the hang of Jazz . Interesting to read the comments in Hermans'' list of recently viewed Youtubes.Jazz was a culture of the time, Speakeasys, smokey basements. Jamie Cullum should be on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Sq. Stuffed (|Allegedly)ce

I haven''t listened to it yet because my computer at home is knackered but The Guardian are streaming the new Bon Iver album at the moment. They have been playing Calgary quite a lot on 6Music and if the rest of the album is anything like it then it should be great. If you like this then I would suggest getting hold of his debut album For Emma, Forever Ago which, legend has it, was recorded in seclusion in a log cabin in Wisconsin. And sounds like it too!
