lake district canary 4,531 Posted September 29, 2018 I''m with Ron O to a certain extent, except unlike him my affinity with any music after 1990 is approximately nil. Beethoven, Berlioz, Holst, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, R Stauss, Stravinsky, Ravel, Mussorskgy, Anything pre - 1700 Any music of the sixtiesAnyhing from the big band eraJive Kate BushPaul SimonFats WallerLouis ArmsrtrongStephen SondheimGeorgie Fame Richard ThompsonCuriously two of the best performers, Rod Stewart and Robbie Williams, who both have fantastic voices, rarely perform anything that is worth listening to - both terrific at jazz/swing style, but don''t do it often enough. Stewart was on TV last night trying and imo failing to be a rock singer...again. What a waste. For anyone interested - this is fascinating and entertaining on so many levels, I defy anyone not to enjoy this -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0Tvj83xqDw

king canary 7,577 Posted October 10, 2018 International break seems a good time to bump this thread.I actually think Robbie Williams has a pretty good voice...Also, another music based question- most embarrassing album you''ve ever bought?Mine was the one album Hear''say ever released. What a band.
Herman 9,710 Posted October 10, 2018 Probably my first ever album, Night Flight To Venus by Boney M. Oh those Russians.

FenwayFrank 2,456 Posted October 10, 2018 Rocking all over the world - status quo. I still have no idea why I bought it. On the subject of embarrassing I’ve agreed to take Mrs Frank to see Boyzone next year 🤭😔
Nuff Said 5,088 Posted October 10, 2018 I went to see Barry Manilow a few weeks ago with some friends because tickets were cheap and we thought it might be a laugh. For someone in his mid-seventies he can sure put on a show, highly recommended if you can get past the musical snobbery.
ron obvious 1,498 Posted October 11, 2018 If you want something pretty far out it''s hard to beat Bulgarian women''s choirs:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaG1Q4bpVSoAlthough as an unlikely combination of musical genres this just about takes the biscuit:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9fiNS8tKHkNoggin the Nog meets Stravinsky meets blues harmonica with vocals in the style of Anthony Newley meets David Bowie ... Herman 9,710 Posted October 11, 2018 If that''s the Voix des Bulgares album that I have Ron then yes, it is a stunning piece of music. Well worth a listen.

It was remarkable.
Herman 9,710 Posted October 11, 2018 Just had a quick look and it is the same group, different album. I only thought they did one so will look forward to giving it a good listen later. And to hear that echoing around a cathedral would be spine tinglingly good. Cheers.
Stone 0 Posted October 11, 2018 The La''s The Fall - Heads RollDMA''s - for NowBriefly listened to a bit of IDLES but need to give them a proper listen at an appropriate volume.
How I Wrote Elastic Man 1,181 Posted October 13, 2018 Fall Heads Roll!On their USA tour of 2006 after the release of FHR, Mark´s band quit after a car crash gig in Phoenix, leaving just him and his wife Eleni, who was the keyboard playerTheir American record label rustled up a new band, and they played just 2 days later in San DiegoThey opened the gig with Bo Demmick, then there was confusion for the second number. The pick up band played Midnight in Aspen, whilst Smith and Eleni played Pacifying Joint. I´ve got a bootleg of the show and I´m playing this right now. It sounds pretty good! The pick up band actually started writing and performing new Fall material on that tour, and stayed with him for over a year and recorded the album "Reformation"God I miss The Fall
Stone 0 Posted October 16, 2018 I''m a bit of a latecomer to The Fall - far too late, and this is my first proper taste of them (which l''m thoroughly enjoying). That sounds pretty typical from what I''ve read - ''if it''s me and your Gran on bongos, then it''s The Fall'' Any recommendations from their HUGE back catalogue!? I''m thinking... Guest Posted October 16, 2018 Been listening to some old Funk Brothers, the Motown studio musicians.Listening with the vocals removed and as a poor bass player, listening to James Jamerson''s playing illustrates how important the bass was to the overall Motown sound. king canary 7,577 Posted October 16, 2018 "Briefly listened to a bit of IDLES but need to give them a proper listen at an appropriate volume." Yes they deserve to be properly cranked up. ''Never Fight a Man with a Perm'' is a fantastic song at high volume.
FenwayFrank 2,456 Posted October 16, 2018 James Jameson was a great bass man wasn’t he Keelan ? Sad story how it all ended for him.
ron obvious 1,498 Posted October 16, 2018 IDLES sound pretty good. Nice & angry & a bit scary.Anger often makes for memorable music. Watching Colossus made this spring into my head:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awY1MRlMKMcNow that was one angry chap. Very very scary. And very funny (I burst out laughing when he briefly appeared as a nun).
Crabbycanary3 994 Posted October 17, 2018 In the last fortnight, I have seen , Big Boy Bloater and the Limits, and the Proclaimers, both in Norwich. Both masters of their art.
How I Wrote Elastic Man 1,181 Posted October 17, 2018 Country on the click is a good oneOn The Fall Online Forum, you´d probably find a general consensus for the early 80´s as being the best period. Grotesque, Hex Enduction Hour, Perverted By Language, Wonderful & Frightening World, This Nations Saving GraceI´d also suggest Levitate from the late 90´s, and of the later stuff, Re-Mit and the final album of all, New Facts Emerge
Eccles from Beccles 0 Posted October 18, 2018 I’ve never been a big album buyer, I preferred to buy singles-Fiery Jack, How I Wrote Elastic Man, Totally Wired and Lie Dream of a Casino Soul are possibly the best sequence of singles from any band in the 80s. I thought they went downhill very quickly after that though.I’ve got a copy of Marquis Cha-Cha too-they were going for £100+ just after Mark E Smith died but I think I’ve missed the boat now ☹️
How I Wrote Elastic Man 1,181 Posted October 20, 2018 as great as Icelandic rap is, and as great as The Fall were, perhaps it´s time for some local stuffas referenced on the first page by, I think, King Canary, here is Let´s Eat Grandma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvMirCfy1HUno idea how to do a clickable link :(
