OT- Whatcha listening to?

Recommended Posts
"Not The Fall???"

I had the privilege to be at The Fall''s final gig in Glasgow last November so have been revisiting their back catalogue - some forgotten gems and reappraisal of the more recent stuff.

Apples
Forgotten now many times I saw the Fall... never knew what you would get but never dull. Had the chance to meet him but was too scared...

Great post this...

I''m with Ron O to a certain extent, except unlike him my affinity with any music after 1990 is approximately nil.
Beethoven, Berlioz, Holst, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, R Stauss, Stravinsky, Ravel, Mussorskgy,
Anything pre - 1700
Any music of the sixties
Anyhing from the big band era
Jive
Kate Bush
Paul Simon
Fats Waller
Louis Armsrtrong
Stephen Sondheim
Georgie Fame
Richard Thompson
Curiously two of the best performers, Rod Stewart and Robbie Williams, who both have fantastic voices, rarely perform anything that is worth listening to - both terrific at jazz/swing style, but don''t do it often enough.  Stewart was on TV last night trying and imo failing to be a rock singer...again. What a waste.
For anyone interested - this is fascinating and entertaining on so many levels, I defy anyone not to enjoy this  -

International break seems a good time to bump this thread.

I actually think Robbie Williams has a pretty good voice...

Also, another music based question- most embarrassing album you''ve ever bought?

Mine was the one album Hear''say ever released. What a band.

Rocking all over the world - status quo. I still have no idea why I bought it.

On the subject of embarrassing I’ve agreed to take Mrs Frank to see Boyzone next year 🤭😔

I went to see Barry Manilow a few weeks ago with some friends because tickets were cheap and we thought it might be a laugh. For someone in his mid-seventies he can sure put on a show, highly recommended if you can get past the musical snobbery.

If you want something pretty far out it''s hard to beat Bulgarian women''s choirs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaG1Q4bpVSo

Although as an unlikely combination of musical genres this just about takes the biscuit:

Noggin the Nog meets Stravinsky meets blues harmonica with vocals in the style of Anthony Newley meets David Bowie ...

If that''s the Voix des Bulgares album that I have Ron then yes, it is a stunning piece of music. Well worth a listen.

It may not be the same Shoppe choir from Bulgaria, although I think it is, but I went to a concert given by one such in the Anglican cathedral 15 or 20 years ago. It was remarkable.

Just had a quick look and it is the same group, different album. I only thought they did one so will look forward to giving it a good listen later. And to hear that echoing around a cathedral would be spine tinglingly good. Cheers.

The La''s

The Fall - Heads Roll

DMA''s - for Now

Briefly listened to a bit of IDLES but need to give them a proper listen at an appropriate volume.

Fall Heads Roll!

On their USA tour of 2006 after the release of FHR, Mark´s band quit after a car crash gig in Phoenix, leaving just him and his wife Eleni, who was the keyboard player

Their American record label rustled up a new band, and they played just 2 days later in San Diego

They opened the gig with Bo Demmick, then there was confusion for the second number. The pick up band played Midnight in Aspen, whilst Smith and Eleni played Pacifying Joint. I´ve got a bootleg of the show and I´m playing this right now. It sounds pretty good!

The pick up band actually started writing and performing new Fall material on that tour, and stayed with him for over a year and recorded the album "Reformation"

God I miss The Fall

I''m a bit of a latecomer to The Fall - far too late, and this is my first proper taste of them (which l''m thoroughly enjoying). That sounds pretty typical from what I''ve read - ''if it''s me and your Gran on bongos, then it''s The Fall''

Any recommendations from their HUGE back catalogue!? I''m thinking... The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click)

Been listening to some old Funk Brothers, the Motown studio musicians.

Listening with the vocals removed and as a poor bass player, listening to James Jamerson''s playing illustrates how important the bass was to the overall Motown sound.

Yes they deserve to be properly cranked up. ''Never Fight a Man with a Perm'' is a fantastic song at high volume.

IDLES sound pretty good. Nice & angry & a bit scary.

Anger often makes for memorable music. Watching Colossus made this spring into my head:

Now that was one angry chap. Very very scary. And very funny (I burst out laughing when he briefly appeared as a nun).

Country on the click is a good one

On The Fall Online Forum, you´d probably find a general consensus for the early 80´s as being the best period. Grotesque, Hex Enduction Hour, Perverted By Language, Wonderful & Frightening World, This Nations Saving Grace

I´d also suggest Levitate from the late 90´s, and of the later stuff, Re-Mit and the final album of all, New Facts Emerge

I’ve never been a big album buyer, I preferred to buy singles-Fiery Jack, How I Wrote Elastic Man, Totally Wired and Lie Dream of a Casino Soul are possibly the best sequence of singles from any band in the 80s. I thought they went downhill very quickly after that though.

I’ve got a copy of Marquis Cha-Cha too-they were going for £100+ just after Mark E Smith died but I think I’ve missed the boat now ☹️
