OT- Whatcha listening to?

Recommended Posts

Jefferson Airplane produced a couple of wonderful songs. White Rabbit was one, but I think my favourite is Somebody To Love.

The Coen Brothers made A Serious Man, a seriously neglected film I reckon, charting a man''s (no hero he) search for Truth. He believes it can be found in physics, but that fails him, so he searches amongst Talmudic experts, is tempted by drugs, meets charlatans, is lied to & generally abused.

His last hope is one mystical rabbi who refuses to speak to anyone. He is finally allowed an audience, whereupon the rabbi produces a walkman confiscated from the protagonist''s son near the film''s beginning.

He puts the headphones on & plays it; he hears the music of a 1960s pop psychedelic band who, like all such bands, soon abandoned their drug inspired idealism. But.

When the truth is found

To be lies

And all the joy

Within you dies

Don''t you want somebody to love

Don''t you need somebody to love

Wouldn''t you love somebody to love

You better find somebody to love
Good list until I got to ''Portugal the Man'' ;)

Listening to Carseat Headrest this morning at work- quite enjoying it.
Carseat Headrest is quite good!
My friends play in a band called Rest & Relaxation which you can find on Spotify. Think it''s called ''EP1'' but I reckon, by some of the lists on here, you guys would like them. They''re decent.
I also used to play in bands but got a bit bored of the scene. We used to be responsible for putting on quite a few shows at The Ferryboat. Was fun while it lasted!

I’ve always said there is no better voice than the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald but over the last twelve months or so I’ve started to think maybe Nina Simone actually has the edge. As a whole package she was untouchable. You need to get past My Baby Just Cares For Me which is all most people know.

Nuff Said, try a listen to Sans Blues Thank You by Michel Herr (featuring Bill Frizell later into the piece).. it was on Late Junction 6 months ago. A lovely piece of jazz blues from 1978! You said you like some jazz stuff too.

Thanks folks above for your listens. I''m going to follow up some of these.

If you want some nice Jazz with a latin twist check out Azymuth.

Older than most of us and so economic with their playing just to prove Ron wrong about lots of notes.

keelansgrandad, I was really talking about modern jazz. The old stuff was often fun, & I love The Temperance Seven.

It''s amazing how long jazz has been going; Ravel''s music is often jazz influenced (sonata no.2, 2nd movement being a particular example) & Debussy''s Syrinx has the most wonderful falling cadence which is pure jazz.

Truth be told there are pieces I like in just about every genre, but some contain very few. As I said, there''s a plethora of pleasant music out there, but life is too short so I tend to listen to that which moves me. And I accept that what moves you is a matter of personal taste.

Spot on. The days of being influenced by pretentious NME journalists and the Mercury Prize are long gone.

Music is merging so much and I suppose that is inevitable with only a few notes to play with.

I never liked Country and Western and still don''t to be honest but many of the newer artists are moving away from Western that I am listening to it more and more.

Just as Blues has evolved into a Black/White mix and you don''t have to have been born by a river to play modern blues.

Sleep Well Beast, the latest album by The National, is on repeat for me at the moment. Or anything by The National, for that matter. What a (depressingly beautiful) band.

While we are/were talking about jazz piano, try Exit Music (for a film) by Brad Mehldau, which I love. And it took me ******* ages to realise who it was a cover of.

Going OT slightly and immediately contradicting myself, does anyone else think we should institute a blanket ban on all cover versions for a year or two? Especially if by fey young women with wistful voices, or earnest young men with a beard and acoustic guitar? It all got out of hand after Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

Current listens?

Young Fathers and Vince Staples on holiday.

Max Richter or Peter Broderick at night.

First Aid Kit, Ane Brun or Neko Case for recent female songsters.

Ben Howard,Michael Kiwanuka and Bon Ivor of the current chaps.

The National I agree is listenable as was the Snow Patrol post depression new album.

Paul Weller has just released the first album that I have actually liked.

Loads of back catalogue.

Sounds like you need to check out a band called "Peace"... Think you''d like them based off that list.
