Well that was ... very nice.

But there''s an awful lot of nice music out there. Generally I like to be disturbed, moved in some way - taken somewhere I haven''t been before. Life''s a bit too short really (& time slips away ... ).

Being an old DJ, you have to have an interest in dance music.

My interest moves all the time, Motown, old interesting stuff from their undercard, R&B - proper R&B not bl@@dy Beyonce, and Northern Soul. Currently I''m going through a Northern Soul phase - which is basically old R&B - hopefully I''ll get the chance as some time to do another hour on Chrissie Jacksons show (Radio Norfolk) to do and hour of Northern Soul. Here''s a taster...

What has been a revelation for me this last year is Late Junction on R3. A real mixed bag of interest with the occasional gem you''ve never heard of but which then opens up a new unexplored world!
At the moment it''s a mix of:
A Day To Remember
Matchbox Twenty
Four Year Strong
Cartel
Deaf Havana (support a local band guys! Their new album is far more mainstream than i''m used to but James is a great lead vocalist and the album was number 1 in the charts for a week or two I believe). They have a song called Hunstanton Pier actually, here''s a link (alot slower than their usual songs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te712XaVMgM
Haha! Funny you should mention those guys! I''m from that neck of the woods (went to school in Hunny) and I know a tonne of people in that vid! In fact, I used to play in a couple of hardcore bands and I''m sure that''s where DH got their early inspiration [;)][:D]
Radio Cornwall during the day. When it first came on air it was shanties with a finger in your ear but now everyone is my age listening they do play mostly from my era onwards.

While relentlessly playing anything with the late Terry Kath, my favourite guitarist, playing I am listening more and more to soulful country rock.: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, St Paul and the Broken Bones and a bit of Alabama Shakes
St Paul and the Broken Bones are fabulous! Their singer...wow. The face of Alan Carr with the voice of Marvin Gaye! Amazing. Their performance on NPR''s Tiny Desk Concert is one of my favourites and they played in Norwich not long ago too.
If you like them, may I suggest you also check out Nick Waterhouse. Sublime stuff!

Thanks for that Bob. Did you get to see them in Norwich? I know they aren''t doing anything new but it is so great to hear that music live. Paul Janeway the singer is Otis reincarnated. Their version of I''ve been loving you too long is breathtaking. They are playing five dates in the UK in November.

I saw Nick Waterhouse on Live from Daryls House. Very good he is too. I am sure I saw him on Jools Holland a few years back.

Giving the latest Interpol album a listen at work today- quite like it so far.

Also heard good things about the new Christine and the Queens album (the first one was brilliant) so that is going on the list.

Haven''t been able to get into that new record so far. Will have to give it time, I guess.
I love Turn on the Bright Lights though... Brilliant stuff!
I''m now one of those people who always say ''Their early work was better!''

Not The Fall???

And some of us like “feckin jazz “ Ron! I’ve been enjoying The Sons of Kemet who were up for the Mercury Prize this year, which isn’t exactly jazz but there’s definitely an influence there. It’s actually fashionable at the moment - like clothing if you hang on for long enough it comes back in again.

Yes! Me too! Only just stumbled across it but I’m now downloading and catching up when I can, although I’m struggling to listen to everything I have stored ATM. So much music to listen to I’ve ditched The Archers podcast.

And a big, big shout out for BBC 6 music, definitely a reason to go to DAB, I couldn’t be without it now. Cerys Matthews is always playing great stuff and surprIsingly I’ve probably discovered more new music from Iggy Pop’s show than any other.

Not sure about these tunes, Nuff! Sounds a bit like Die Antwoord gone even wrong(er).
Sons of Kemet are decent though!

"Not The Fall???"

I had the privilege to be at The Fall''s final gig in Glasgow last November so have been revisiting their back catalogue - some forgotten gems and reappraisal of the more recent stuff.

I''m sure you do like jazz, Nuff Said. A lot of people do. Unfortunately to me it sounds like a group of talented musicians showing off by stuffing as many notes into a short a space of time as possible. I''m full of admiration, but seldom much more. rather like the way opera singers with fabulous voices scream at each other from a distance of 2 feet accompanied by acting not seen since the days of silent movies.

I do like King Crimson''s Discipline album though, which is about as close to a kind of jazz as I can get.

The Fall sound interesting, but his voice was just to unmusical for me (as is Bob Dylan''s).

The human voice is such an individual instrument which makes it endlessly fascinating. It''s the reason I generally don''t like the trained classical voice as it is trying to attain some sort of non-existent perfection.

Different voices are going to appeal to different people & you just have to accept that.

Polly does it for me. The missus can''t stand her. Here she is declaiming the story of Eve''s temptation in about two minutes:

Not The Fall, no, not since Smith died

It just kind of felt like a full stop for me. I´ll go back again, but it might be a bit of time...although His band are carrying on under another name (Imperial Wax) with a new singer, might go and see them sometime

It´s a lot of Icelandic rap with me now, and stuff like Mogwai

Although right now I´ve got Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath - live at the Capital Centre 1977, on the go

ARrgghh!! Not the Tull, they’re my Kryptonite. Ian Anderson’s voice just makes my hackles rise. For years I thought I hated anything with a flute on it until I realised it was only Jethro Tull I hated.

Cerys Matthews has coincidently just played some very groovy jazz flute. Nice!

And Ron, give Kind of Blue by Miles Davies a try when you’re in a relaxed frame of mind. That is very definitely about what’s left out, not squeezing notes in. If you don’t find something in there, then I’m afraid you’re a hopeless case 😀

I spend most of my time now listening to lenny by Stevie Ray Vaughan as my 10 year old daughter is learning to play it.

The Fall at Essex Uni was my first ever gig. A bit hard core for me. A huge punk pushed his way to the front and as soon as Mark E. Smith got close enough, he grabbed him and pulled him off the stage. Bouncers appeared from nowhere and swamped him, dragged him off and threw him outside.
I went a bit safer with The Human League for my second.
