OT - England Squad

Recommended Posts

Just wondered the general consensus of the WC squad, personally I''m quite a fan of the selection, and good to see Southgate not being the "Yes Man" like so many previous coaches and including youngsters and getting rid of the older players..

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley).

Defenders:

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Fabian Delph

(Manchester City), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Harry Maguire

(Leicester), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), John Stones (Manchester

City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), Kyle Walker (Manchester

City), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Midfielders: Dele

Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan

Henderson (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Ruben

Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham),

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City),

Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).

Standby:

Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Adam Lallana

(Liverpool), Jake Livermore (West Brom), James Tarkowski (Burnley).

We can argue about individual preferences but Southgate has indeed picked his own players who will play his style.

My only disappointment is that with Dier and Walker able to cover in central defence, he maybe could have done without Cahill and maybe picked Wilshere.

Does seem to be too many defenders and not enough quality midfielders.

Despite injury hit season, I’d have taken Lallana as he’s been England’s best performer in lots of games over last few years.

Mind you, what do I know..I’d have taken Gunn, Maddison and begged Wesley to come out of retirement and switch nationality!!

Shelvey is probably the main one who can consider himself unlucky not to have been given a look.

@gjp

Shelvey is too much of a liability for me- could easily see him doing something stupid and getting suspended for three games.

Not sure we need Delph and would rather he''d picked Sessegnon, just for something different.

Real shame Ox got injured, as this team seems to lack a little creativity.

thank god that an England manager has finally had the sense to take 3 specialist right backs to a finals..

Always been a fear of mine that we don’t have a couple of spare right backs on the bench for 3-6 games.

also good to see that there are also amcouple of players that can play right back if needed.. phewwwwww

A squad which looks like Southgate might go for a back 5.

Think it is sensible and no players picked for the sake of having someone young but will ultimately take little part. Wilshere’s inability to play two 90s within in a week meant he really didn’t have a chance but no Ox and Lallana means a lot of responsibility on Alli to produce.

Love Gunn, but he’s not even the best English keeper in the Championship - I’d have looked at Sam Johnston ahead of Pope but hardly like 3rd choice keeper is a big issue.

As always for England it is about players bringing their club form to the national side.

We do have a lack of midfield creativity but I am not sure that wanting to select inconsistent or average players in place of those selected is really the answer. Neither Wilshere (injuries and inconsistent, brilliant one game, non existant the next 5) nor Shelvey (consistent but below international level ball player who is an option for Henderson but no where near the eriksen type we need) would be anywhere near my england squad.

It is damning that of the 5 midfielders listed I would not have lingaard henderson or Loftus Cheek as international class. The latter my improve and has done well for Palarse but that Lingaard and Henderson are arguably the best others selected shouts what limited options we have and that at least bring some squad consistency and in relative terms experience..

For me Oxlade Chamberlain and Lallana would be going if fit.

However I suspect it will be 3 cbs each game, and with wingbacks being used in a 3421 352 or343 formation it is easy to see why we have 9 defenders.

We do have flexibility - defenders who can perform in midfield (Delph, Young) and Sterling has shown he has the flexibility to be the creative threat.

It is hard to be be optimistic about our chances but it is a young squad without the hangers on is a step forward, but unlike Germany Belgium or Brazil we do not have a vast array of quality options to pick from.

Shelvey has been one of the best midfielders in the Prem in recent months and has kept himself out of the Refs notebook. So perhaps it could be argued he has matured and upped his game.

Also, there are players in that squad who have put in some horrific tackles this season - Kane being one - and people haven''t taken much issue.

Think Shelvey might not have been given a fair look, especially with a squad seemingly defender heavy and midfield light.

Got to remember that two of those listed as defenders can also happily play in midfield- Young and Delph.

Also he hasn''t taken three specialist right backs- Southgate has used Walker as one of three central defenders so the squad suggests he has that in mind going forward.

Yup. Delph is surely being seen as a midfielder otherwise that area is very light if Dier or Henderson got injured.

On the whole most of the players he''s picked do at least play most games for their club. As far as I can see, its only Delph, Jones, Stones, Lingaard, Loftus-Cheek, Rashford and Welbeck who aren''t first choice in their positions every week.

More of an indictment of how Man City, Man United and Chelsea have massive squads of players and don''t play the young English players.

There is a lot to be positive about in the squad I think.

Going forward, Kane, Vardy and Sterling combined for 68 goals in the Premier League last season.

You could line the team up as a 3-4-3 with Walker, Stones, Jones, Trippier, Dier, Henderson, Rose, Sterling, Kane and Rashford and you''ve got an entire outfield who played Champions League football this season.

Only Rashford and Lingard featured in over 30 league games. Bet they didn''t start or finish them all either. Stones only played 18 league games, Welbeck (25), Delph (22) - injuries of course...

My point is they''re not considered first choice at those clubs like Kane or Vardy are. I can''t help but think their development and the success of the England team is stifled by this.

I hope we play this team:

Butland

Walker Cahill Stones Rose

Sterling Dier Henderson

Sterling Alli

Kane

Alli has to play close to Kane for us to have any success that''s how they play at spurs so we have to take that into England

i would go with

Walker, Stones, Jones, Rose

Dier, Henderson,,

Sterling, Alli Rashford

Kane

Dier to sit deep to cover the runs of rose / walker

The Front 4 are good enough to get in any team

Hart cant get a game at a poor hammers after plenty of howlers while Wilshere hasn''t had an impact at Arsenal let alone ready to do so at an international level - we may only have 4/5 games - he disappears for that many before and after a good game; we cant afford to wait!

I see no way that Southgate doesn''t play a back three with how this squad is constructed and I think its the right idea. Our strong points are attacking wing backs and talented strikers. Week points is a lack of real wingers and not much in central midfield. So the 3-4-3 type formation will allow us to use our attacking wing backs, lets Sterling get close to Kane for interchange and stops us being hit on the counter easily.

is there really a need to take 3 right backs/wing backs in walker trippier and Alexander -Arnold and 3 left in Rose Young and Delph......how and why would we ever need all of those?. Surely Southgate could have sacrificed at least on of these ....probably Delph to make room for Wilshire.

He''s used Walker as part of the central 3 recently so I''d expect that is why he''s taken Tripper and TAA. Delph can also play central midfield and Young can play further up the pitch.

He''s seemingly looked to have a few players who can play two or three positions which makes sense with limited space.

Rose and young are better left backs than delph...and he offers nothing in midfield....a wasted place in the squad.

At least Wilshire would offer something slightly different.

Best we can hope for now is that there is an injury between now and the start of the tournament to one of these superfluous wing backs and lallana is called in

Disagree he offers nothing.I think Southgate also doesn''t want to take players with fitness doubts - Wilshere is made of balsa wood and Lallana hasn''t played in about 3 months.

Rose has had a nothing season though.

Delph has played regularly for the best team in the country. And one of the best teams we have seen.

Well guardiola hasnthe played him there this season...and he''s not as good as Henderson or dier.

Wilshires played 35 odd games this season.

....just don''t think he''s given himself enough of a variety of players in midfield particularly with oxlade chamberlain out.

We''ve got defensive mids and attacking mids but nobody to link the 2 with a pass.

Just think if we''re trailing or needing a player to put his foot on the ball and find a through ball, Southgate will look along the bench and see 4 full backs and a couple of centre halves.
