Dean Henderson (GK) joins Sheff Utd, not us

Recommended Posts

Wonder if we were really interested or possibly we said he would have to fight it out with Remi for no1 spot?

Wolves signed Portuguese international so how about that Ruddy bloke coming here 😏

Think Norwich were interested in getting him before he signed his renewal at Man U, but not so interested in a loan.

Who eventually does come in as keeper will be interesting. Danny Ward from Liverpool on loan could still be happening.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to spend a couple of million on a good young upcoming keeper and having another investment accumulating experience and value?

I want a squad of Norwich players not loanees.

It’s all about priorities and what is available.

Norwich really, really need some strikers. Spending money on a keeper takes funds away from that. Due to the nature of keepers it is generally possible to get very good ones on loan - if Danny Ward was an outfield player of the same relative quality, he’d probably be getting 8-12 games for Liverpool in rotation and cup competitions etc. as he’s a goalie he isn’t getting those games and they’ll look to loan him out until he reaches his peak.

Norwich can only sign so many players, and getting a good striker on loan is really tough - clubs tend to hold onto those types of players. Also a young striker who bangs in a few goals suddenly become a £10m player - a much better return of investment.

Webber has a good track record with loanee keepers, first Ward at Huddersfield and Gunn last season. Matthews seems good enough to make a competent back up, but might be a bit soon for him to be first choice.

I don''t think they want another loan - if Matthews is to be given a chance they can''t guarantee a loanee first team football as they did with Gunn. I suspect we will be buying someone.

If Henderson can get that at Sheff Utd and he is good enough having played in League One, how come Matthews wouldn''t be ready, having done the same thing?

My thoughts exactly.
If Mathews was not going to be good enough he would have been shifted out.
No sitting on the bench next season will help his development. Angus covered a year for Mathews. If Angus returned then it would mean Mathews back out on loan, likewise any loanee keeper who comes in.
I would suggest that perhaps with Angus returning to Man City certain sections of the media have done their useual guessing.
That''s all.

There''s certainly positions where our £££ needs to be spent, but imo keeper isn''t rn necessarily one of them - more than happy for Matthews to be given a go,or a loan. I''m not that bothered missing out on this guy.

I think who comes in will be determined partly by who goes out, simply on the basis of wages.
We know about Jarvis, Niasmith and Martin but both Oliveira and Pinto will be on a fair whack. And we cannot simply cash them in like casino chips. Someone has to take them on. I expect at least three of those to be gone by September. If we are also in for Ben Marshall then whither Jarvis.
Do we sign year long loans so as to allow the likes Fonkue, Abraham and Morris time to step up, or ''ready made'' forwards'' who may well keep them on the bench?
Much is not necessarily in our hands.

I’d agree with the sentiments about moving Matthews on if they felt he wasn’t good enough, if it wasn’t for the fact he is both home grown and more importantly club grown.

Now Murphy has gone the two club grown players Norwich have who are probably match squad capable are Matthews and Lewis. I would include Cantwell but feel the club will loan him out again to continue his development.

Keeping Matthews at Norwich, as back up keeper means that Norwich can cover their club grown requirement without shoehorning another player into the squad.

Norwich need another keeper and they would be foolish if they didn’t look to get the best possible keeper in, especially if they can do that on a free or loan and save limited cash.

I also don’t think it scans that because Matthews and Henderson both played in League One they are equally good and ready to play for Norwich. The club will know exactly how capable Matthews is and the fact they seem to be looking for someone to come in ahead of his suggests doubts exist.

It was suggested that we dropped out of the race for Henderson around the time he signed his new contract with Man U a few days ago which equally suggests that if we were interested it was in trying to pick him up as a free agent on a permanent rather than have him on loan.

I think I would agree with that stance. I feel it shows a bit of a lack of ambition/faith in his own ability to sign on for another 2 years at Man U and go straight out on loan again rather than back yourself to become a permanent number 1 at a championship club but then i suppose a contract from Man United is probably a tempting carrot for a young player even if you know you are not going to play there.
