Forster has lost form and confidence, for whatever reason - that is not the kind of player we need. We have to have someone who is going to be reliable.

Form and confidence are temporary.  On his day he''s a great keeper, so go get him !!

He’s on £70k and week and I doubt looking to drop a division.

Add that onto his shaky form that has been going on since his nasty injury back in 2016 and he really isn’t worth touching at all.

Woodman would be my first choice.

He may be willing to drop to get regular games. Part of his problem may be that Southampton have not given him a regular run due to the pressures of the Premier League and their close shave with relegation last season. Without that run he obviously cannot rebuild his confidence. It could actually be in Southampton''s benefit to loan him to rebuild his confidence and transfer value, so we could get him at a reduced rate if we tried.  He was also here before so settling in should be easy for him.

What are you talking about Paul?

He played the first 20 Premier League games for Southampton last season and all 38 the season before that. He wasn’t in and out of the team.

Having seen him play numerous times over the past couple of seasons I think he has deteriorated significantlu since his injury and isn’t someone Norwich so look to bring in on loan - especially as he would be very expensive. Even if Southampton paid part of his wages they are unlikely to pay enough for it to be affordable.

I also think Norwich should avoid bringing in players who are obviously on the decline.

Basically, he is very expensive and not very good.

That actually emphasises my point, as he never got another chance after the first 20 games, probably due to relegation pressures.  If he''s not very good as you say then we could get him very cheaply indeed !! Personally, I wouldn''t be so quick to write him off.

He didnt get another chance because Alex McCarthy was better than him. The same reason Michael McGovern didn’t get a ‘chance’ last season.

I haven’t written him off quickly. He has been substandard for the last two seasons.

Southampton have recognised this and brought in Angus to replace him. Let someone like West Ham waste their money on Forster while Norwich should go and get a decent keeper.

Goalkeeper is the most important position in the team. McGovern is no good. If (I have no idea) Matthews is only as good as McGovern then he also is no good and we will need someone markedly better. And better at the crucial basics of goalkeeping, which have not changed, and do not include being able to play like an outfielder. That ability only counts as a bonus if the basic attributes are there.

"Woodman would be my first choice." - why, thank you Bethnal (*blushes*). Oh, I see... #awkward

I''d agree that ''good enough'' can''t apply for a goalkeeper. It is a specialist position - even more so if, as we are, needing someone very good with the ball at their feet.

For me, Remi''s not quite there yet and its too much of a risk to take. McGovern''s not good enough and from what I saw of the Paderborn highlights was kicking the ball long at every opportunity (albeit we scored from 2 of them!).

I''d go all out for Woodman or Ward on loan. Both are very capable keepers who have enough experience for the Championship.

An interesting one would be Tim Krul, hadn’t realised that he is now a free agent after leading Newcastle.

Although the problem with free agents will be the money that he will want and would be drop down to Championship, unlikely I suspect.

It’s difficult though as a decent keeper can make or break your season and I’m not convinced Matthews or McGovern are good enough.

quite my thoughts, Purple.

Hart was dropped because his inability to distribute, although his basic ability to save a ball has never been questioned. that''s something a team worries about if they''re aiming for european and premier league titles.

we''re not going to have a pickford, who can ping a pass to the other side of the pitch with his weak foot.

but we can''t afford to have a keeper who can''t save a ball

Can''t be any worse than what I''ve seen so far

If Norwich want to play Farke’s system of playing out from the back they have to have a keeper that is comfortable with his feet. It is as essential as shot stopping, without it the whole system falls apart.

As for Hart...

His performances at Torino and West Ham show it wasn’t just his distribution that was the problem - he has tumbled off the edge of the goal keeper cliff.

I have to disagree, Bethnal. Distribution cannot be as essential as shot-stopping and all the other basic attributes, such as positioning (THE key attribute), command of the area and handling. I get that the goalkeeper/sweeper is part of the modern game but the priority has to be someone who is intrinsically a good goalkeeper. All the distribution skills in the world are no use if the keeper is letting in soft goals.

I wouldn’t suggest getting someone in who can’t save a shot. But I also wouldn’t want to get someone in who panics with every back pass and whollops it into the crowd.

Look at the goal Matthews conceded against Lincoln, yes it was a bad back pass from Raggett - but he was 40 yards out, a keeper who is comfortable with back passes would not have let that in.

It is a balance of course but distribution is essential, under Farke Matthews can expect to see a lot of the ball. For example Gunn had as many touches of the ball in the game versus Boro last season as their centre backs did.
Forster is reported to be on £70k a week. I don’t think he is a serious option.
Well, if the Suffolk Socialists would like to sell the club to someone who is going to bankroll the wage bill then this should not be a problem at all.

It all turned around for Man City as I recall......

For me it seems as though the plan since last summer was always for Remi to come in as no. 1 this year. I seem to remember Webber saying something along the lines of the reason we''ve bought Angus in on loan is because we don''t any of our own that are quite ready for the Championship yet, but perhaps next season (2018/19) we would - and hence Matthews loans to Plymouth, as opposed to being no. 2.

Whilst I didn''t watch any of Plymouth''s games last season, reports are that Matthews had a very successful loan. Also from what I understand, during pre-season he has been less than convincing so far but perhaps could just be a simple dip in form. One thing I do know though, McGovern is not good enough and should not be starting and we have a sorry state of affairs in the GK department if that becomes the case!

I saw in Paddy’s live chat this afternoon that he has heard Norwich are looking some goalkeeping options from 2. Bundesliga.

Found this interesting as I think most had assumed a loan from a domestic club was most likely. Whether this German option is only available if Nelson or possibly McGovern is sold is unclear.

The best keeper I know of in 2. Bundesliga is Daniel Heuer Fernandes who plays at Bochum and was a former Portugal U21 keeper. He’d be a good option on my opinion as comfortable with his feet but also strong in the more traditional aspects of keeping. (He also has the same agent as Franke and Steipermann)

I''ve never seen Matthews play, but I don''t entirely trust reports from fans, or journalists or even former players as pundits on goalkeeping and goalkeepers, because many don''t understand the position. They get overly impressed by a string of spectacular saves (the kind of thing that got McGovern noticed)  and don''t notice the positional errors or the bad decision-making.For example the very experienced Daniel Taylor, in his World Cup final report in The Guardian, mentions the obvious howler by Lloris that gifted Croatia an irrelevant second goal but not a word, presumably because he didn''t realise it was such, on the dreadful positional error by the Croat keeper  that presented France with the killer 3-1 lead.

Matthews is being asked to make a big transition. There is no reason why he won’t make it but perhaps he could also challenge for his future right to play from the number two slot. It may be a way to integrate him without a sense that he has the cross hairs permanently trained on his temple. Right now Matthews is still something of a gamble and the standards expected of him are now very high and exceed those of his last season. McGovern clearly needs moving on because if he were good enough he’d be playing. However based on results so far the conclusion must be that we either need a new number 1 keeper or at least a direct competitor to Matthews for this spot - ideally the candidate will be someone who could be a future premiership quality player. Matthews has yet to keep a clean sheet on tour and although talented he needs to either seize his chance now or get back in line. We simply can’t wait 10 games for him to come good. Not if we want promotion. It’s a rather harsh reality. Being a keeper is a very tough job indeed even for an undoubtedly talented player as Matthews is.

Just watched the Union Berlin highlights. First goal is really odd- Matthews seems to be favourite for it, the attacker is infront of the defender so he knows the defender isn''t getting it but he just retreats for no reason. Misjudged the flight of the ball maybe?

Second one obviously there is nothing he can do about.
