Goalkeeper

My shout would have been a loan for Ward at Liverpool but it seems he''s getting a run out for them in pre season....beggars belief that they don''t appear interested in getting a new keeper to replace Karius

Farke will have made his mind up about Matthews, so we shall see over the next few weeks if another keeper is brought in or not.

Being one of our own I''m sure we would all love to see Matthews succeed here but Farke needs to get his decision spot on.

Given our shortage of homegrown players, I would have thought a Premiership loanee to replace McGovern would be a no-brainer. Then Matthews being the number 2.
Realistically Matthews, Lewis, Hanley, Marshall and Rhodes make the squad, Husband might have to be shoe-horned in, and Cantwell, Raggett, Godfrey and Thompson would be on the fringe and close to loan deals) and we need 7 homegrown in every squad.

It will be interesting to see what Farke does.  On the bits I saw today, Matthews looked a little shaky once or twice, but goalkeepers have to be mentally strong and he may prove himself over the next few weeks.

It would be a real blow Farke does get this squad going well and we get let down by a keeper who''s not yet up to the required standard. Crucial to get this sorted.

Don''t know much about Matthews but if he isn''t better than McGovern then he''s not good enough.

My hunch (fear) all along is we have weak GK''s following Angus departure. I imagine SW/DF have been working on it for a good while though - new appointment shortly I would think...

We have been very strongly linked with goalkeepers so i imagine we will be looking for one to compete for the number 1 shirt.

My impression from the stream was that Matthews doesn''t have the passing range to compliment our implied style- perhaps something that can be coached into a young keeper but it was an obvious weak link. I don''t think anybody can deny that he also really should be stopping their second goal, getting down really slowly- I do wonder however if this was down to tiredness as the whole XI in the first half looked like they had to run to the game from Colney.
At this point I''m not sure if Remi is the answer- but I would currently order it Matthews / McGovern / Oxborough, meaning it would necessitate a replacement.

A lot of blind faith on here has been placed on the shoulders of Matthews since Angus left based on Plymouth fans opinions and twenty second clips on Channel 5 on a saturday night.

Rather than loan one and be in the same boat next season, I would prefer we bought one... Now that we are financial sorted of course

Can loan a far better keeper than the club can currently afford to sign permanently.

The goalkeeper market is a weird one, due to the lack of roatation and squads only needing 3 at most there are always loads of great keepers looking for loans - but clubs are more hesitant to sell them as the age profile for peak performance is so different.

Danny Ward is a good example - a player of equal comparable ability would probably have played 10 or so games for Liverpool in rotation. However as a keeper he got 1 apperence in the League Cup - Liverpool however are reluctant to sell him as he could potentially be a reserve option in the future. The player himself wants to play to Liverpool might loan him out to keep him developing and happy until he reaches peak.

To sign him would probably cost £5m/£6m - a fee well beyond Norwich currently. But a season loan would probably not be massively above what a new first choice keeper’s wages would be.

I wouldn’t really have an issue with having a different loan keeper every season until Norwich were in the position to bring in a high quality one permanently. I don’t think Norwich are in that position presently.

"Can loan a far better keeper than the club can currently afford to sign permanently."

Wasn''t this the same argument made for a loan striker? Isn''t it pretty much the case for every position on the pitch?

At some point we''ve got to actually spend a bit of money if we actually want to improve the squad long term. If we can''t afford a striker or a keeper this summer after we''ve made about £30m in player sales why will we magically be able to next season? Or do we just keep kicking the can down the road?

I watched a live feed also, but it was the World Cup Final and many watching would have said that Lloris was rubbish.

Judging on one match is easy but not always indicative.

We now even judge goalkeepers on how they distribute the ball. But in reality, the most specialist of positions is easily criticised.

Surely Matthews must be given a chance to play for us.

Agreed KG.

I remember watching Ruddy in a pre season game for us before he ever played competitively (Everton I think) and he made a howler for one of their goals. Walked home thinking how we had made a poor signing, only for him to have a good season and us getting promoted.

Not saying that will happen but far too early to judge RM. The coaching staff will know if he''s up to it or not.

Problem is most options are going to be worse than Gunn was for us last year. I''m sure we''ll give Matthews and McGovern a good chance before looking at replacements

Gunn was an exceptional loan signing, they don''t always or even often work out that well.
But most were advocating for Matthews to be given a chance. At the moment he is. Goalkeepers are a good loan option though for the reasons Bethnal says. They don''t get any game time whereas players in other positions get minutes on the pitch from the sub bench etc.

I agree to a point, but what I feel might be more indicative of Mathews level is that he is still splitting these games with McGovern, which for me may show that Farke is still unsure who will be starting come august 4th.

and if that is the case, I think many here would agree that we need better than McGovern in goal, and if Mathews isn''t able to provide that we may need to look elsewhere. The last thing we want is to make strides with the outfield players and tactics to be knocked back a place by goalkeeping.

Maybe Forster just needs a fresh start away from Southampton. I’d have him back in a heartbeat. Can’t see it happening, due to wages though.
