Toffolo to Millwall - Free transfer

Recommended Posts

According to Sky Sports he is joining them on a free with performance based add ons.

Until the emergence of Lewis I felt he had a real chance to come back here and make an impact. Shame :(

I always wondered if he''d come good for us.  I only recall seeing him play once (in a pre-season against Cambridge United) and he looked very useful that day (but then again, so did RVW as I remember...)

My concern would be that with the start Lewis has had, he doesn''t hang around for long, I hope im wrong, and we are left without cover again.

However, unfair to expect Toffolo to hang about, just in case, as his age etc.

So it appears that we haven''t harvested a great crop from that FA Youth Cup winning side.

The twins and that is it. It doesn''t look as if Morris will make it with us.

The 1983 winners did slightly better in terms of providing players but only just.

I suppose the money we made on Jacob shows a measure of success but I wonder how many more will come through.

The latest crop show some promise but are we now just a buying club?

Norwich may not have harvested many players, but they will get some money for Toffolo and also received a fee for McGeehan - you''d also expect Norwich to get a fee down the line for Morris. Along with the two Murphys, that is a pretty good return for a Championship level academy and all goes towards keeping the academy going.

You''d normally only expect 1 or 2 players to remain in the football league from a youth team.

As Webber specialised in youth recruitment and development I would expect there to be more young players coming through, he has always highlighted this in his interviews. It isn''t just about a player''s ability, but also having a long term plan for their development. Unfortunately this never happened for Toffolo.

What I expect more of is the club bringing in more players like Adam Philips, Mourgos, Abrahams etc. Young players who are standing out in the lower leagues, or being released from the Premier League academies. Whether you consider that making Norwich a buying club or not is up to you.

I don’t think we’ve done too badly. I just had a look at the Chelsea squad that won it the year before we did and of the 11 from the final, they’ve made 19 senior appearances for them.

Of course, getting a game at Chelsea is harder than getting a game at Norwich but they also have the absolute pick of kids from all over Europe and beyond.

Four of them are out on loan (each has been loaned a minimum of four times) and of them only Piazon at Fulham has made a senior appearance for their parent club.

The players I’d perceive to be the best of the group (Chalobah and Ake) have both left, John Swift appears to be doing well at Reading, one was released and seems to be out of Football completely while another plies his trade at Boreham Wood. Perhaps the strangest one is a chap called Affane (chortle) who appears to have had five clubs since leaving Chelsea and is now at Gothenburg.

So, there are two playing at the top level, neither for Chelsea. 4 others on loan at or playing for Championship clubs, a couple abroad, one rotting in the ressies, one non-leaguer and one who’s now a plumber or postman or something.

Of the loanees- they’re now 24. What happens next for them will be crucial.

This is good news for Harry himself, i believe if he was going to  be a regular or even cover player for City he would have done so by now, in truth his career  is receiving the hopeful push it needs. Millwall is certainly a step up from the Scunthorpes and Doncasters i guess. All the best to Harry in his new challenge.

Recall watching Toffolo lay in a pre season against West Ham and thought he did okay, even though I believe he was held responsible for their goal.

I think he then picked up an injury and maybe he hasn''t fully recovered from it because there must have been room for improvement and then a small step to senior football... Even as a number two

Great news for Harry, a chance to prove himself at a higher level and if he does well I''m sure they''ll offer him a longer contract.

Shame it didn''t work out for him here, but Lewis is only going to make that position his own now (if we can keep hold of him!)

They will not get a fee for Toffolo........Millwall have agreed to take over his Norwich contract with the player receiving bonus related payments, so in essence a free transfer. No fees to the club, just gets him off the payroll.

Agree AJ, Lewis should now make that berth his, just thought that Harry could have aimed to be a replacement if and when we sell Lewis.

Maybe he didn''t feel he could out muscle Husband or even adapt to Farkes style of play.

Shame for him, but he''s never quite made it with us. He''s been unlucky with injuries, but has never seemed to get the rave reviews when he has gone out on loan, apart perhaps from when he went to Scunthorpe.

As someone said, this free transfer frees up another set of wages, 6 months ahead of when he was likely to be released anyway. We now have Lewis, Husband and possibly Stiepermann ahead of him in this position.

@City 2nd,

The way the story is worded on the Pink''Un site (..."join the Lions on a free but with performance-related add-ons included in the deal) suggest that Norwich will receive bonus payments, not the player (although he will probably be in line for some also). I imagine if they avoid relegation and Toffolo plays a certain amount of games before the end of the season.

Well I can go back quite a few years and we have always been a selling club.

Don''t think it was Harry''s decision to be fair, he''s been pushed out the club but his contract is up in the summer anyway so at least this gives him a potential platform to make it in the Championship.

In any case, Lewis will be permanent LB, then we have Steipermann as back-up and Husband who can play there too. No room at the inn for Harry now

Well I can go back quite a few years and we have always been a selling club.

And we always will be.

But I wonder if we will join the trend to just buy someone instead if nurturing our own. There are several in our U23 squad who we have technically purchased.

Wasn''t a surprise for me, hes been out on loan at 5 different clubs since 2014/5 season and never started a game for us, if my memory serves me right.
Now behind the pecking order of Jamal, Lewis, Husband, Stiepermann  for left back and at 23 this year with a family probably wants stability

Winning ''I''m a celebrity, get me out of here'' was probably the high point in Toffolo''s career to date.

He was one of those players that was never going to be considered as a likely candidate for a regular spot in the first team despite lots of supporters wanting to know why we were sending him out on loan. The same will apply to Cantwell. He really was a bench warmer who was lucky enough to get a very small cameo role against Chelsea in the FA cup.

Not so sure about that Grumpy. The new regime seems to be looking at players differently to previous managers and coaches. They''ve come in not knowing anything about the fringe and youth squads.

I get the feeling if Farke had been here last season, someone like Maddison would have been involved rather than being loaned to Aberdeen. Lewis was almost immediately part of the first team set up from day one.

Cantwell was too, but the coaches feel that if he''s going to benefit us next season, he needs time playing first team matches, which he won''t get while we have players like Murphy, Maddison, Watkins, and now Hernandez who play in a similar position to him. I agree, he was fortunate to get time in the Chelsea game, but has been there or thereabouts for a number of games this season.

Sadly for Toffolo, I''m not sure Farke & his team saw the same potential as they did for Lewis.

One of those you can really want to succeed. Seems a thoroughly decent young man but life can often be about timing. Injuries seem to have come at bad times while maybe his wing half qualities might have been nurtured to better effect had Daniel Farke been on board earlier in his development. But as others have said Jamal overtook him rather than be pushing him for the shirt. Am I right in saying supporters at one of his host clubs funded a loan spell? If so, he must have more than the average about him. Good luck Harry!

Always looked a decent enough footballer just not sure he has the pace to play on the wing or physicality for straight left back to really step up to championship standard consistently at this moment. I was always surprised to see him look abit weak as the few occasions i saw him in the youth team he was playing centre back.
