Best and Worst game you've ever seen?

Recommended Posts

It is nice to hear of some real obscure matches.

I always remeber fondly a cold mid week game away to Sheff Utd in 2001. Trailing 1-nil to a Iwan Roberts own goal, Darren Kenton popped up in the 88th minute to bury an equaliser. Much to the delight of 300 plus travelling fans.

It was my away first game on my own as a 15 year old, and I remember the sense of excitement at being allowed to travel from Grimsby on the train. I was the only Norwich fan on the that train, which quickly filled with Sheffield United fans as we approached Doncaster and Rotherham. My adrenaline was pumping! I made sure to cover my shirt on the way home though... the locals were not too chuffed.

A fond memory...

Best...away win in Munich...!!! I''ll never forget that one! There were better games, ie technically the football was better (eg. our away win at Arsenal in 1992, etc...), but the occasion...it was fantastic

Worst...the game against Charlton when we were relegated to L 1...sickening

Best for me would be 1985 at Wembley. Rubbish game, but deliriously happy at the result in the context of our history and the two previous failures at Wembley. Wembley last time was pretty special too.

Worst - not the Millennium, I actually enjoyed most of that game. Not Colchester as that was such a momentous match for so many reasons, but a Hughton match - shock horror - the 4-0 away non showing in the league cup against Man Utd.

Beating Villa 1-0 in 92-93 was awesome as was the 4-4 draw with Middlesboro. The away play-off semi at Wolves was pretty awesome, rubbish game but hate Wolves fans and trip to the Millennium.

Losing 3-1 to United not long after the Villa game was desperately disappointing, 3-0 down after 18 mins. The 6-0 at Fulham was painful to watch given how much was riding on the game and the number of fans we''d taken to CC.

The one that I always springs to mind other than the Munich games was a league cup replay in ''94 at carrow road against Tranmere Rovers where we came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 and it also included one of the most memorable OG''s I''ve seen live.

The 6-0 defeat by Fulham was certainly the most miserable

In terms of pure excitement, the best was the 3-1 win against West Ham in an FA Cup 6th Round Replay in 1989 where Disco scored the decisive third goal.

Inevitably the best games were those where they won against the odds:

Bayern Munich

5-1 at Everton

4-2 at Arsenal

Wins at Anfield and Old Trafford in the late 80s; early 90s.

Worst games:

Every defeat caused directly by Delia (Colchester, Burnley (h), Fulham, Charlton to mention just a few)

Worst has to be the Fulham debacle - an absolutely brilliant away day right up to kick off, with thousands of NCFC fans everywhere in West London, full of anticipation and within 10 minutes of kick off it was so apparent that the team had nothing to give. Such a let down.

Best: probably the 1985 Milk Cup Semi - I was in the corner of the River End and South Stand, hanging onto the barriers at the very back of the stand and literally jumped half way down the stand on top of loads of people when Bruce put the header in at the other end. In terms of crowd celebrations, that eclipsed the play off semi in 2015 and Jackson''s goal v Derby - although I definitely enjoyed them too!

Best game purely because it was the first match I took my son to was the  Millwall game 6-1 he loved it.Worst there are a few but the one that sticks in my mind was the Newcastle game I had a stinking hangover had to climb a million stairs and watch my team lose 6-2 then have a long drive back.

worst... there are a few candidates.. losing 6 nil to Fulham when our fate was in our hands.. losing 5 nil to Arsenal on TV in 1989..

but my clear worst game - might be one people have forgotten - away at Leicester on 17 Dec 1995.. i remember it was a sunday and the game was on tv.. That morning Martin O''Neill resigned and was announced as the new leicester manager.. they then beat us 3-2...

and went on to get promoted via the play-offs.

that was Norwich under Robert Chase.

I know im answering my own thread, but enjoying reading the replies. Not best/worst games, but significant to me.

My first ever Norwich game, taken on a special trip to Carrow Road for my 13th birthday October 1994. Special trip for me as a Norwich supporting kid from the midlands. Mark Robins signed my programme, John Deehan made an effort but I didn''t have a pen. Went to the club shop and bought a Gunn goalkeeper top (the really psychadelic one, don''t know why, I didn''t play in goal), Lady in the shop really patient with me as I went through top after top trying to find one that looked just like Gunny''s in a picture I had. First half was a bit drab, 1-0 down at half time if I remember. Sense of disappointment as it was a special day for me, then we scored something like 4 goals in 16 mins and won 4-2. I wrote to John Deehan and got a very nice letter back. Great day.

Second memorable game, this time an awful one. Doncaster 2009 at the Keepmoat. Freezing cold, 1-1 think maybe Jonathan Grounds scored. Remember bringing on Carl Cort, seemed so desperate and depressing that our hopes were pinned on him rolling back the years. A sad sign of the sorry state we were in in that era. Memorable for me as it was the 3rd date I had with my other half. The dreadful football didn''t put her off me as we have 4 kids now!

Remember that game well as it was one of the few televised. I might be getting my games mixed up but was that the one we were winning g until they brought o. A young lad called Emile Heskey who destroyed us? Fond of many a player from that era. Remember thinking of O''Neill as the one that got away and that maybe we''d have had Leicester''s success. That game must be one of the few ever to take place with both teams managerless?

Yes, TGMD, we were 2-nil up and cruising in that game until they bought Heskey on and he changed the game, scoring a late winner from a bad backpass to Gunn.

I remember Mike Walker was co-commentating the game for Anglia TV and he had been all but confirmed as the next Leicester manager until O''Neil resigned that very day and they suddenly saw the opportunity to go for him instead, which made for a very awkward commentary if I remember rightly.

Wtf Vince? You just embarrass yourself posting such silly nonsense. I imagine you know nothing about the woman or have any insight whatsoever as to the role she plays in the club.

So many good ones already mentioned, but ONE of my faves was the 3-2 Boxing Day win at the Binners (1982) with Martin O''Neill''s last minute, outside of the boot, free kick winner - Cue PANDEMONIUM

Not such silly nonsense as you might imagine if you care to analyse the circumstances of each game mentioned.

The Colchester game we were managed by someone appointed by her, but who was clearly not a manager and was soon dismissed by McNasty.

The Charlton relegation was caused by her appointment of Doomcaster who proceeded to stack the squad full of players who belonged to other clubs with her blessing.

The Fulham relegation game was due to her sticking with Worthy for too long as he was clearly not EPL material and his career soon fizzled out after leaving Norwich (one-season-wonder manager, 2003-04). Any other club would have sacked him much earlier, but we know from plenty of experience that the Suffolk Socialists are Specialist Ditherers.

By the time of the Burnley game even Worthy himself was astounded he hadn''t been given the sack by her after a progressive decline since EPL relegation.

The 5-0 at Brighton was another example of Delia being directly to blame as Neil should have been sacked much earlier. In fact, straight after the defeat at Newcastle the season before.

Conclusion: Other clubs sack failing managers, but NCFC seem to think there is some advantage to be gained in allowing a failing manager to continue when everyone knows they will have to sack him in the end anyway. Worthy-Hughton-Neil.

For some reason the best game for me was the 3-2 home victory over QPR in 1976, when we denied them the title.

I''ll never forget Colin Sullivan''s goal.

Worst can be either of our trips to Wembley in the seventies.

Such great games to get there, and two no-shows.

worst game is tough. Losing to the Scum on my birthday was pretty hard to take and there’ve been no end of hopeless, hapless and helpless away days to contend with.

6 at Fulham, 7 at Man City, 4 at Reading...ugh...., 4 at Charlton, 3 at Wimbledon and however many other 3,4,5s I’ve witnessed. But; one that really ground my gears was getting a shoeing at Luton. 4-0 down at half time if I remember correctly including Rob Green falling over his own shoelaces to fall in the goal before the mishit cross sailed into the net. Utter shambles. I think we finished up losing 4-2 - Ryan Jarvis might have scored but that was a crap night in a crap town and even having to walk through somebody’s house to get in the ground couldn’t soften the blow.

Then there was getting done 3-0 at Colchester....

Ugh....

Best game? Wembley 85 maybe - we bloody won something...TOTL at Portman Road with a Leon brace, Bradley’s screamer when we tonked then at home, the 3-3 at Arsenal was an incredible game but, predictably, winning at Wembley with my Dad, sister, son and nephew will take some beating.

Terrible away games are so much worse than terrible home games due to the travel. Treking up to Birmingham only to see us lose 3-0 with Naismith playing upfront for instance wasn''t much fun.

The worst was that 3-1 home defeat to Everton in the 1973-74 relegation season. For a match between two teams in.one of the world''s supposedly best leagues it was dire, and from both teams, comically so. Everton were poor too. Our "goal" was provided by an Everton defender and we repaid the compliment for one of theirs. There followed the bust-up between South and Saunders that led to the later leaving, and ushered in Bond, who brought with him the West Ham style of passing football that reached its peak under Stringer. And typified by a 2-0 home win over Chelsea early in the 1989-90 season. We played beautifully, with one of the goals a classic of understanding between Crook and Bowen. Crook''s long pass over the defender down the left was so perfect it actually span towards the goal, so Bowen didn''t even have to control it but just thump it first time past a startled keeper. It must have been the BBC radio commentary, because the match summary in Sports Report was by the wonderful Peter Jones (a fine voice and an evocative turn of phrase) who said "Norwich City''s football sparkled like the sun on the River Wensum behind the ground". And it had.

Re the QPR game:

That’s where the ball boy placed the ball instantly for a quickly taken corner for the last goal in the dying minutes?

We were on MOTD That night, but never seen it since.

BEST early in 93 94 season ..we beat Everton 5 1 away and Blackburn 3 2 BUT the most complete performance was a 4 0 win at Elland Road including a Jerry Goss special. Wonderful days which ended all too soon when Walker left

Worst Also at Elland Road in May 95 Needing a win to have a chance of staying up, we led for most of the match only to concede 2 in the last few minutes to confirm relegation and 9 seasons in the wilderness.
