Confidence, belief, etc.

Recommended Posts

DF said,‎

“Yes, I think the players have this in their heads maybe they are struggling a little bit at home. When you add to that we have lost some recent games it is not so easy for the self-confidence.‎

“It is not about me doing something psychological or speaking to them. It is about working hard on the pitch to get it back."‎

“I don’t want to make excuses about a loss of confidence but of course they are not full of belief. We have to put away any thoughts it is a difficult period."‎

“We scored with an early goal so you think that would help the self-confidence. We want to play good football for our supporters. I think we can play much better and entertain. We didn’t in this game."‎

“We can force things more. We can be there with a better attitude, to be awake and concentrating on our details. I don’t want us to wait for a win, but to force one. We have to be more brutal in the duels."‎

Confidence, belief, concentration and a better attitude, all DF''s words, all exist in the head(brain).

Having to put these thoughts away, also his words, and of course thoughts ‎are created in the brain.

But, apparently it''s not about him doing something psychological, it''s about working hard on the pitch. I find this somewhat concerning, as I believe;

‎"The discipline to train the body reveals character whilst maintaining performance, the willingness to train the mind builds character whilst enhancing performance."

Of course the physical work is required buy with a negative mindset it may only serve to reinforce the negative.

If he is unsure how to handle the psychology side, then employ someone who can, surely it is no different to having a physio or specialist GK coach. ‎

I think Farke is quote good on the psychology aspect -  "We have to put away any thoughts it is a difficult period" -  he is effectively saying put aside negative thoughts - and work hard at being pro-active.

Thanks for your post LDC, however let me ask you a question, just exactly how do you put aside thoughts? Furthermore, would it be better if the players, en mass, we''re given help to do it?

DF''s comment is akin to a Judge saying to the jury, "The Jury will disregard the last remark." Yeah right, how exactly do you do that.

Anyway he actually said, it was not a time for psychology, or words to that effect, so not quite sure I agree with you when you assert he is quite good at it.

As far as I can see, given his words, he is not, very few managers are, that in itself doesn''t make him a bad manager, however being unable to recognise the part psychology plays in any performance, not just sport, may do.

If DF believes that was our best away performance, then I have serious doubts about his sanity, let alone his psychological abilities.

IMO, he is either deluding himself, trying to delude the fans and/or players and /or the owners, or is in serious denial.

Either way, can we rely on this individual to set out game plans and motivate players if he genuinely believes what he said?

Somewhere inside of me hopes he knows what he is doing, but I''m yet to see it, but may be, and I hope I am, blind to his game plan, otherwise I think we are in trouble.

I''ve a suggestion. Start from the premise that DF is an intelligent man, a good coach, and meant precisely what he said; then ask yourself what exactly about the performance tonight led him to say it. You never know, you might end up agreeing with him. Or maybe Parma can be persuaded to help with some exegesis.

I think we are one win away from regaining our confidence. Our uptick will start against Preston. The best possible game given our current situation.

Hi Westcoast, hope all is well with you?

I very rarely criticise for criticisms sake.

However on this occasion I felt the need, my issue of course, but I firmly believe he is (currently) out of his depth. Not his fault of course but then it may not be my fault I can''t run 100 metres in under ten seconds, although I did manage 11.8 once, many years ago, so would I be selected for the next Olympics? Doubt it!

Maybe I''m being a bit harsh on the man and he will rise to the level I wished for him when appointed. He was obviously going to be on a learning curve but so far I''ve seen no evidence of such.

I believe he is an intelligent man, however there are many forms of intelligence, as I''m sure you know. He may well be a good coach too doesn''t mean I believe he is doing a good job at the moment, which is linked into the learning curve, which I sincerely hope becomes exponential very soon.

Cheers

Westcoast,

Maybe my intelligence is lacking, either that or your ability to make a point is, but I don''t get the point. Could you be erudite.

Cheers

If we are patient, I think it will come alright in the end. We were poor at the beginning of the season, we are poor since being beaten by Arsenal but we had a period in between when everyone was getting excited and saying this is the start of something special.

The system hasn''t changed that much throughout, the underlying philosophy is the same, so I think the problems are currently ones of self-belief and confidence.

There couldn''t be a better opportunity of regaining confidence than by playing Preston and showing your ex-boss just how good you are. Admittedly, it didn''t work against Lambert whenever he came back but it is up to the players to make it happen. If thy can, then I think we will see in hindsight that this is our low point.

His behaviour and body language on Saturday was far from motivational and calm, he was behaving like the german with the small moustache you see on numerous youtube versions before he shoots himself....

He was also reverting to communicate more in German with his staff and the german speaking players during the game as he got more frustrated which was and will create an even greater "us and them" issue. I always saw this as a high risk when you bring in a whole coaching team of another culture and also a number of players. Webber needs to stamp that that out.

[/quote]^^^ This.  Too many people just assume the worst of people rather than try and understand them.  Yes, we lost, but if there were elements of improvement in that game and more of the right kind of decision making going on, more control being exerted (even without the end product), or at least signs that the players were trying the right kind of things - then that is a reason why Farke might have said what he did.
