Club in decline? Naaah......

Recommended Posts

By definition if the club is having to sell its better players, its income has fallen through the floor and is not being successful on the pitch then it is in short term decline. We are at a crossroads and can bounce back if we sign good young players from the lower leagues in lambert style. This is probably our last chance though mess the next two transfer windows up and we will be in freefall with attendences falling away

This isn''t true.
Yes, it is.  There is no debt to speak of apart from a possible £7m overdraft.  If we sell on the players I mention, there will be a good sum of money  available for players.

You''re ignoring the parachute payments ending, thus meaning our income will take a significant drop.

Also of the 6 players listed, nobody is paying us a fee for Naismith and Martin.

Those sales would go a long way towards balancing the books and reducing the wage bill but if you think we could then buy 4 or 5 players at £5-6m each then you''re wrong.

I''ve not ignored parachute payments. If you assume that wages ave to come out of income from now on, we are of course going to have to pay players less than we have been in recent years.  But there is no real debt, apart from a working overdraft.  So why is it inconceivable that selling of players will not get us a good amount to spend?  Even if you take Naismith and Martin out of any possible transfer fee, the others I mentioned - Klose £4m, Maddison £18m, Oliveira £8m, Murphy £12m - all guesswork, but still reasonable imo - and £42m in total.  Add Pritchard and you get to £56m.  Do the sums.  £56m minus a £7m overdrdaft still leaves £49m, a club that has reduced its wages to a sustainable level and with money to spend.

To be fair part of the predicted shortfall for next season was the need to get salaries down I think they stood at about £30m a stunning level. This summer we have already shift out a lot of higher earners. Pritchard must have been on a good sum not to mention many of the other players likely to go. Also Wes and tetty will only stay next season if they accept drastically reduced contracts. All new replacements will probably be on much much less so the shortfall will have been slashed in large part before transfer activity. Some of the transfer cash will be used to further balance the books but there should be money to invest in 5 or 6 lower league players, maddison only cost £2m don''t forget. But we cannot afford to buy duds this time and because wages are much lower players will be poached if they show promise

so out of that 54 million, we we going to buy several 5 million plates, have enough money for Colney AND cover the drop of income from parachute payments?

In response to the proposition of the OP. It is obvious to all that the club is is on an upwards trajectory. I’m sure that those of us currently on the road to Bristol will enjoy all that such a trajectory means for the team this afternoon. What a fiasco.

We are apparently putting up for sale our most valuable playing assets to whoever shows an interest...
So silly a start to a post...our club has not at anytime  presently put any player up for sale..its become a norm for every transfer window for every club to have their best players in the transfer window....
Semantics- there is no difference between ‘everything for sale’ and ‘we’ll consider all offers’ which, at the moment looking from the outside is where it appears we are. In a similar vein we must assume Maddison is available-a Coutinho-style ‘he’s not for sale’ statement, whilst completely meaningless, would give the paying fans some faith there is not a fire sale going on. Unless of course there is.

So basically, if we sell all our players using your made up figures we’ll be ok. How do you propose we cover our losses EACH year as well as having the cash to buy new players? Absolute nonsense from you yet again.

Football is cyclical: we are in a downward stage of our individual cycle. There is no reason to suppose that that the current situation is in any way permanent. So long as we retain control of our finances and avoid becoming laden with debt, there is every reason to expect an upswing in the future - the timing of it will depend upon the skill of the manager/ head coach and the quality of our purchases just as it always has been.Economists measure and compare cycles by comparing peak to peak and trough to trough. Our last trough saw league one and debt of about £18 million - only when we exceed (lower position/ greater debt) could our decline be seen as structural. Those of you that deny the existence of "a cycle" and imagine permanent success inhabit rather simplistic worlds imo. Of course you are allowed your opinions but it takes rather more than invective for your case to be convincing to considered opinion.

Indeed. I have relatives who were generation by generation lifelong Man City supporters and who to a man gave up after seeing them being sold out and leaving Maine Rd. That was from the grandfather who was 83 at the time to the four sons and consequently the to the four grandchildren, all disillusioned by the PL and Man City''s sell out - and now follow the local team Hyde Utd.

And you could probably find thousand upon thousands of Manchester City fans that are absolutely loving watching a team of world class players, managed by the best manager on the planet, playing some of the best football ever seen in England. In a world class stadium too.

We won''t be making a loss because we won''t be paying stupid wages to also-ran & past-it players, instead we''ll be promoting young players & making vast profits (a la Maddison)

:-)
