VAR... ha ha ha

Recommended Posts

If we are going to see players shouting and hounding refs for VAR everytime they feel the decision is against them then it is a poor addition to the game.

Well done to tonights ref for not being bullied into refering to it.

It will get worse believe me. It will be a cop out, understandably, for a ref to get a second opinion when players are crowding him.

But I thought the ref did well tonight.

If refs continue to use VAR as it was used tonight perhaps players will stop going down before they are fouled (a la Willian) or falling over at the slightest touch like Morata. It will also mean that Italy never win another World Cup.

Shearer has it right.Unlike many other sports most of the decisions made are subjective, so this nonsense is pointless - and is nothing more than a silly gimmick.Like plastic pictures, the quicker it is rid of the better
I''d like to think the VAR lads looked at the Willian penalty (which it was) and thought after Pedro''s clear dive earlier there''s enough of a reason not to give it because your teammate is a cheat
If you watched the incident from behind Willian you will see both feet leave the ground at the same time. It was a dive.

Rubbish, rugby is equally subjective and its been used there for several years.

Thought ref was excellent tonight given the pressure he was under. Morata was a dive all day long.

Willian was closer cut. Ref got a good view of both, believed he was correct so no need for VAR. VAR only needed if ref doesn''t see or isn''t sure. As for the replay itself, he could easily have stayed on his feet. He trailed his legs looking for it. Seen them given I admit, but disagree with the BBC pundits it was stonewall. Yes there was contact, but nowhere near enough to throw him to the ground like a sack of spuds.

Shame really, as I''m sure the ref will get hounded in the press tomorrow. I hope not, I thought he was excellent and handled the occasion very well

In internationals, not in the rest of the games. And with rugby many of the decisions are not easy to see for the referee to seeTonight brutally exposed the nonsense that it is.

The differance is that refs are not yelled at by players and managers, there is more respect.

In football VAR will become a tactic. A red card for diving would be a better way

And you think that every club has the money to use that idiocy week in week out ?The Willian penalty decision demonstrated what a total waste of time it is.Most will have seen in many times and from different angles yet there is still different opinions. All this nonsense is doing is shifting the decision away from the referee, NOT giving a decisive decision like a run out in cricket, or a ball out of the court in tennis. What next ?VAR for Come Dancing when the judges vote does not agree with some members of the public''s view ?

The VAR naysayers are merely luddites.

If it increases the number of correct decisions being made, then it is better for the game, even if it still does not reach 100%.

Thought 1 red was for second booksble offence and other for dissent after being booked, again effectivly a second yellow.

Straight red for diving would stop the issue

Millenial techy view of finding a use for tech.

Whats the next version of VAR? No ref on the pitch, put a camera on a drone, get the drone to follow play and have the game reffed by a man in a control centre.???

If the professional game cannot be replicated at grass roots then we should avoid things like VAR.

We will have parents using video cameras at an U10 game next to proove that their dear little lad was fouled because evidence is on the iphonr.

What does "millennial techie" even mean?

The fact VAR didn''t override the Willian dive tonight surely underlines the balance is right (umpire''s decision)?

Not all refs will stand by their decision and will be bullied into a review by players yelling at them. I agree, tonights ref had the courage of his convictions, not all will. The game doesnt need this intrusion

Willian''s "penalty" was a dive. I don''t think anyone who looks at it from a nurtural perspective could say anything other than that. Takes a two footed jump over Klose''s leg and catches it on the way down. if he''d stayed on he feet and not dived, maybe Klose would have brought him down, who knows? But he jumped two footed over Klose''s leg and that is an intentional act of non sportsmanship and he was correctly booked for that.

Nobody thinks that the introduction of VAR will eliminate all controversy. But, as its use in the Leicester game showed, it can bring an increased accuracy in many kinds of recurrent situations even if not in all. Furthermore, it is still in the early stages of deployment and, as in Rugby Union, it will take a bit of time for the necessary refinements to be introduced and for everybody to become accustomed to it. Players try to bully referees all the time and the answer is to book them for it, not allow them to subvert the introduction of a valuable aid to better decision making.

I''m so glad that Willian''s "penalty" was not given. I am fed up with, as others have said, the ball player''s leg, suddenly ''collapses'', into a non stride, and then makes contact with the defender''s leg.'' It''s about time that these type of ''incidents'' were highlighted. Morata''s was another one. Jenas''s comment about ''entitled to go down'' was pathetic, but unfortunately, prevalent, in the game.

Well played Referee, for being strong, and it is quite unusual for a Ref to be like that, in such a situation, where the underdog is away to a ''Big team''.

Perhaps another law could be implemented that if a player on one side dives then no penalties will be awarded at all for that team for the rest of the game. Referees have had enough of being duped, and in Chelsea''s case last night it is now certainly coming back to bite them. With two players banned, maybe they will learn......

Willian brings his legs together, buckles his legs and drags his feet looking for contact.

If the ref says he saw the contact but deems Willian has gone looking for it than it’s hard to argue against him

Agree with all these comments regarding William. He was on his way down before the contact was made. Ref was right, pundits were wrong and VAR simply wasn''t needed because the ref was sure in what he saw. He was obviously right as the VAR didn''t pull him up for making an error either. It''ll only get bad press because of the press. Hardly any controversy when the correct decision was made

The view from behind shows both feet off the floor well before any contact. Willian made it look good but the ref was spot on.

The BBC have posted the clip from all angles including a slo-mo with the caption saying Shearer thinks VAR is a shambles.

Literally everybody other than Chelsea fans seem to think Willian was already well on his way down before the contact, which suggests VAR actually worked perfectly

At the end of the day it is somebody''s opinion, whether that be the ref or the guy who is watching the video, and this was proven last night. If anyone thinks this waste of time bit of kit will make any difference then they are in dreamland
