Rudolph Hucker 0 Posted September 26, 2017 All due respect to JH but he was as anonymous in games as often as he was stand out - usually with his goals. In recent seasons our midfield has been a weakness whereas it now looks like a strength.I didn''t see this game so, with your best impartial hats on, how did JH compare to Tettey, Pitbull and Madders? hogesar 9,658 Posted September 26, 2017 He was neat and tidy on the ball but basically had no impact on the game. Trybull nicked it off him a few times too which was enjoyable.
Fiery Zac 1,066 Posted September 26, 2017 All too often the question of Howsons best position came up (which was as a box to box midfielder imo). Fantastic on his day of course but anonymous far too often. The closest comparison would be with Trybull. Would anyone swap them? I certainly wouldn''t. Time will tell but he looks confident what his role is, is always scrapping and closing down, looks much more of a leader than Howson was and has great vision to create. Canary Wundaboy 1,359 Posted September 26, 2017 Typical Howson game, decent with the ball but just doesn''t impact the game at all.

Crabbycanary3 994 Posted September 26, 2017 In the modern game, is there any room for, or success with, a box to box midfielder anymore?
Rudolph Hucker 0 Posted September 26, 2017 We wanted a change and had a clear out with big wages gone and inexpensive players coming in.Looks like Farke has done well with the midfield and Gunn has comfortably replaced Ruddy too.

unique 435 Posted September 26, 2017 His reputation enhanced by the occasional spectacular goal, Howson is one of those footballers whose reputation far exceeds their ability. There were many NCFC supporters who thought he should be club captain.........Deluded. Feedthewolf 4,846 Posted September 26, 2017
In the modern game, is there any room for, or success with, a box to box midfielder anymore?
They are fewer and further between, but you only have to look at Kante''s influence in Leicester''s title-winning side to realise that that role can still be hugely beneficial. Kante was often compared to Makelele, but was far more than a screening player. He would high press, win the ball higher up the pitch, but still have the awareness to create chances and score the odd goal too. I don''t think the box-to-box midfielder is defunct, but there is more focus on the specialism of a DM (either the Makelele mould or the Pirlo mould) or an AM (Wes being the best example in world football, obviously). I think the reliance upon one up front has meant more focus on specific AM and DM roles, but someone who can cover the ground between penalty areas is still incredibly useful. ron obvious 1,502 Posted September 26, 2017 I think the word I''d use to describe Howson is diffident.Far too self-effacing, & certainly not a captain type.Lovely chap though. Probably fundamentally too nice.
AJ 1,218 Posted September 26, 2017 Never wanted him to leave by have to agree with some of the comments on here. A very good footballer by all means, but doesn''t influence games enough. Well patrolled tonight by Trybull
Dean Coneys boots 1,400 Posted September 27, 2017 Howson is a gifted footballer but, like many we finally sold on (and a few we still need to) he kinda knows it and feels he is a bit too good for this division. It makes him less driven than a player like Trybull- who has something to prove and is hungry to succeed. In a division of fine margins it makes a lot of difference. And it explains, I think, why Lamberts wannabes were so much better than the later has-beens. How I wish we could offload a certain overly expensive midfielder for this reason. What a joke that he is paid more than any of our current star performers. Add RM to that as well...
It's Character Forming 1,160 Posted September 27, 2017 I felt last night was a typical Howson performance - the odd touch but mostly he was completely anonymous. Certainly did nothing to make us feel we still had him as a player (although a nice touch that he came and applauded the away fans at the end and had some generous applause back). Trybull is playing a different role but looks absolute class.
Jim Smith 2,317 Posted September 27, 2017 Howson will have more games where he is outstanding (in the sense of scoring goals) etc than Trybull but then he will also have a lot of games where he doesn''t have the influence you would expect and on balance I think Trybull is more effective than Howson, certainly in terms of what we need. Can you honestly say that our midfield last season, silky though it was at times, would have been able to dig in and grind out results like the last two away games at Blades and Middlesborough.Games like Burton and Bristol City though are where we perhaps miss Howon;s goal''s from midfield and are the sort of games where Farke needs to find a better balance between attack and defence. He''s genuinely just on the decline and probably was trying to do too much (see the 2nd goal vs Millwall where he chases shadows right across the penalty area rather than do his job).As for Naisy, it''d be best if we could get rid but I don''t believe he is arrogant really either, hes just not good enough and is past it. ZLF 274 Posted September 27, 2017 we have a better balanced team and squad now, with players who are hungry for success. They are prepared to work for the team and want to make an impact.Thansk for the memories Jonny - but you are yesterdays man and I am happy with what we have now. Woodman 92 Posted September 27, 2017 That''s true Jim, grinding out a 1-0 result away from home is excellent. I hope to see Farke going for it a bit more at home, using the likes of Maddison, Wildschut, Murphy and Watkins behind Oliveira/Jerome.As for Jonny, loved him when he was here, scored some special goals, and when he was sold I wondered how we''d replace him. But so far, Trybull and to a lesser extent Vrancic, are proving more than able. Trybull and Klose''s contribution to our 6 game unbeaten run cannot be underestimated. That in itself gave an expectation that we were getting a player who could assert himself and take a match by the scruff of the neck. Never really saw that - he had class and his goals were often superb, but he rarely impacted a game in the way you felt he could, maybe should, have been able to.
