Pre Seasons

Recommended Posts

We seem to have had unsettled pre seasons for a few years (that I can easily remember anyway) - who can forget the Adams era when Royle was taken on then resigned, then a team was played which wasn''t the team expected.

I guess the transfer window is firmly to blame - then, maybe the team itself is largely immune to all this - they take it as part of the usual media circus surrounding teams in the top two tiers especially.

It did appear that it was ''all systems so'' with Daniel Farke''s appointment but how do you plan your campaign with constant speculation about big money transfers? Seems to me again, it is possibly not plain sailing behind the scenes or is it that we have big assets that we have to consider cashing in? Cashing in for next year almost - an eye to 2018/2019 perhaps?

Every club has unsettled pre-seasons, it is the very nature of the game.

The only way Norwich (or any other club) can manage it is by having contingency plans in place for most eventualities. If Nelson, or Jacob, or Pritchard is sold then Webber needs to know exactly who they will be approaching for a replacement.

Webber talked about this very clearly when Farke was appointed, he needs to know who he will be targeting when Farke leaves Norwich. He will be doing the same with every player.

Norwich (or any other club) don''t operate in a bubble and can''t control other clubs, players or agents.

They will of course know what is real from what is ideal paper gossip and they need to plan carefully to minimise potential distribution to the club. This is made much easier now with a Sporting Director and Head Coach model. Farke can just concentrate on getting the players fit and ready for the first day of the season, he doesn''t have to be planning transfer swoops or scouting players, all that is taken care of by Webber, who can pretty much dedicate all day every day to it.

It''s not just our club that has difficulties pre-season. The stupidity of the transfer system and the ubiquitous transfer window is unsettling for the whole of football.   People say it has to be like that - well if so it is to the detriment to the quality of football and the development of teamwork.
So you are saying you now don''t want the transfer window open during pre-season?

When exactly would you have the transfer window then?
Lock down should occur at some point pre-season - two weeks before, maybe.  As it is the saga spoils team development and planning for all clubs as the speculation and player uncertainty goes on and on through the first few weeks of the season.

So you have a 2 week transfer window (the window officially opens on 1st July and season begins 5th August) - is that going to be more or less disruptive? Shortening the window will just push the speculation and behind the scenes work into the end of the previous season - even more disruptive to clubs.

Also, 2 weeks before which season beginning? Or the beginning of the Europa League qualifiers? Are some clubs going to be able to carry out transfers while others can''t? How is that going to work? Surely the disruption to Norwich would be even greater if the window was closed here, but still open in say Germany and a club there activated a first choice players release clause?

Yes pre-season is disruptive, but there has to be a period of time for clubs to carry out re-building etc and it needs to apply to all Europe to actually limit the upheaval to clubs.

As I said, if clubs plan accordingly, don''t leave themselves too exposed and build in contingency plans, then they can minimise the disruption.

There is no problem with the transfer window system - every other club has to deal with it, not just Norwich City. If a club''s hierarchy is well organised and flexible it should never be a problem.

I guess our new model is as best placed to handle the transfer season madness as well as anyone''s. Farke at least can simply handle the playing side of things and concentrate there.

Worldwide transfer windows are at varied dates so in theory we could

have dates that suit us.  The UK dates are aligned to Europe dates

because of UEFA - but it is only convenience that the European dates are

the same.  What should matter above all else is the good of the game

and unsettled players at the start of the season is not good for the

game.  But I do agree with some of what you say Bethnal, but it is not ideal and there could be a mechanism that British clubs have whereby they have an agreement amongst themselves and with their players that once you get to  a certain point - certainly not past the start of the season - no transfers in or out are to be made.   That way evereyone knows where they stand - European players abroad will know they will have to agree to deals earlier if they want to play in this country and if foreign clubs want any of our players they will know they will have to deal earlier.  As long as there is some overlap with Europe, then the syatem would be workable. Coaches and clubs won''t make a fuss about the situation  because they know there is no point in complaining about it, they just have to get on with it, but the system flies against all form of common sense in regard to getting your team committed and working for each other, when maybe half of them aren''t sure whether they will be at that club or not once the season starts.

The current transfer window system may be flawed, but surely it''s better than the system it replaced, i.e. transfers being allowed throughout the season apart from the last few weeks?
