I think he could have mentioned Oli''s superb strike though.

always good to read an independent view of the game - thanks for flagging Ron.

Rewind 4 years and pretty much everything that was written about Brighton in that article could have been said about the Norwich side under Hughton. It''s gonna be a long season if you''re a Seagulls fan.

Completely agree, very accurate and honest report. I thought we looked really sharp loved the crisp, short passin, loads of movement. Liked the look of Maddison last year, but he seems to have really matured, worked really hard, constantly available and always willing to play the simple pass, real class act

Brighton came with the plan to stay compact and reduce Norwich''s chances - they weren''t playing the game in front of them but working on their shape ahead of the PL season. If it had been a league game I''m sure we would have seen a very different approach from them.

By backing off Brighton allowed Norwich to dominate the ball, but as pointed out by both managers, no many chances were created. This could be a big thing for Norwich this season, teams allowing them to knock the ball about in safe areas, but not many opportunities actually being created.

Will be an interesting test next Saturday as Fulham also like to dominate the ball and will press Norwich''s defence much harder than Brighton did.

Brighton are in trouble and they know it

.

when you hear Hughton on TV with an opening gambit of "when you see some of the transfer fees around in this league....." he knows they cant compete on or off the field..

It will be a hard season for them - they have made some good signings for the money they have spent. Gross and Suttner are good players who should step-up to the PL with little difficulty. I like Ryan as a goalie, but he has always been a little inconsistent.

Gross and Suttner are both set-piece specialists, so I think that points to the direction Brighton are heading in - a WBA-lite. If they get it working well it could be as effective for them as it has been WBA of course.

It does seem weird they haven''t spent more money on players so far, I certainly didn''t expect them to be so comprehensively out spent by Huddersfield. Will be interesting to see if they add much more before the start of the season - as we know from bitter experience Hughton isn''t always the most decisive in the transfer market.

That''s what led to the goal and far too many when he was in charge of City.It is not the oppotunities either - it is what you do with them.City look now as if they are playing a ''shoot on sight'' game. Quick break, set up for a shot and bang... goal. That rather than pratting about in the box allowing defenders to get back. or knocking over a high cross giving both sides a 50/50.Look back at the goals scored in the pre-season and count how many were shots from outside the box, and how many were headers.

Shooting outside the box has its place team strategies, but it is usually of very low return. You see teams increasingly trying to create higher percentage shots, which means getting closer to goal and being more central (and not headers). The very best strikers tend to shoot very little from outside the box and tend to take more touches in the box than other players.

I agree that holding onto the ball too long allows other teams to get into shape, and not allowing this is the central philosophy of managers such as Wanger and Klopp.

Farke however has repeatedly talked about keeping possession and dominating the game, this doesn''t translate to him wanting lots of low percentage shots, as they generally result in a turn over of possession. How it sits with Farke that Nelson takes more shots from outside the area than any other Championship striker is going to be an interesting one in the coming season - whether he curbs his natural instinct to do this, or just accepts that is part of his game will be a central theme to Norwich''s attacks.
