The Roy Hodgson thing...

Recommended Posts

Can someone explain to me why so many people keep mentioning Roy Hodgson for the DoF role? Is it just because he''s Delia''s friend? As far as I can tell....

- Hodgson has never been a DoF

- He''s never expressed an interest in being a DoF.

- He was recently linked with the Leicester job and reports suggested he''s keen to return to management

- The best DoFs around are not managers approaching the end of their careers but people who specialise in that role.

He won''t get the job (manager or DOF) because once you start employing your friends then it''s even more difficult to get rid of them when things go wrong

At 69, nearly 70, do you think many clubs would appoint him as a manager?

Indeed does he want to manage.

Who would be the best DOF''s in the game then? A young 35 year old? Name the best DOF''s around who specialise in that role. At what age does one start to specialise in that role?

And so what if he is Delia''s friend? Have you never listened to the advice of a friend who may just have a greater knowledge than you about something?!

Hodgson has had amp,e opportunity over the last three months to become a manager! He hasn''t!

I think there is a very credible argument for an amicable, short term deal with Roy Hodgson certainly.

If we could get him in some kind of consultative role whereby he can help and advise on what is clearly going to be a huge task in restructuring. If he could maybe caretaker boss us until, with his help we find a suitable replacement, eliminating the need to rush into a flawed appointment. Or maybe even be a part of the longer term future if a DoF is a route that would work for all parties.

I don''t know but I really don''t understand why people are so anti him.

.[/quote]I don''t either. In terms of the kind of job we might give him (which would not be permanent manager) he would be a sensible choice. My guess is that he has been advising Smith and Jones recently. And he could carry on doing that, either privately, or as a non-executive director. Or he could become a fully-fledged executive director of football. However he is 69 years old and whether he would be willing/able to take on a full-time role at Carrow Road is a question.

Les Reed at Southampton has been ''Head of Football Development'' for 6 years at Southampton and was previously Director of Technical Development at the FA. He has coached but only had one very short spell as a manager.

Txiki Begiristain at Man City has been a Director of Football since he retired, both at City and Barcelona.

Spurs have Paul Mitchell as Head of Recruitment and John McDermott as Head of Coaching and Development.

These are just a few example- I can''t think of a single Director of Football working in this country right now with a profile like Hodgson''s.

For me our fans have a fundamental misunderstanding of the role. There is talk of having a Director of Football to mentor an inexperienced manager but that isn''t how it works. The role of DoF is to handle recruitment, long term strategy and guide an overall footballing philosophy, leaving the manager to concentrate on coaching, game management and tactics. The DoF also has to have a level of separation from the manager as one of the key benefits of the role is that it ensures continuity when managerial changes happen.

All having an ageing manager in the role will do is ramp up the pressure on whoever is the Head Coach as as soon as there is a wobble people will start looking to the ready made replacement sitting in the Directors box.
