Cheap option

Recommended Posts

Over the last 15 years or so of message boards & prior to that letters to the Pink un the recurring theme from some City fans labelling most managerial appointments as the cheap option.

Can we agree in advance what is or is not the cheap option.

From previous experience of listening to NCFC fans:

Cheap options include

Out of work

Lower league

Internal appointment

Non league

Scottish league bar Celtic

European league bar Spain Germany Italy

Those leagues bar top two or three

International managers bar Spain Italy Germany Brazil

Number 2 at any club

Former player

I''ve probably missed a few but seems fairly comprehensive.

Also worth noting some posters saying the restructure is a cheap option when in reality we will be paying two decent salaries (1 DoF, one head coach) and not one. Hmmmm.
OP [:D]  Has there ever been a NCFC manager who wasn''t a cheap option then? Can''t think of one!
Don''t think Bruce Rioch would have been that cheap, having been at Arsenal in his previous managerial appointment.

It took the cook and her cohorts appointment of Rioch to break that seemingly unbreakable mould.

And before that, of course, Ron Saunders (Yeovil Town, plus a very brief spell of a few weeks at Oxford Utd) and John Bond (lower league Bournemouth). Does Rioch appreciate how unique he is in the annals of NCFC I wonder (and to be fair, he didn''t come to us straight from Arsenal but after a spell as assistant coach at QPR).

Rioch was the perfect choice to bring in the sports science that the owners craved. There was much kicking from "the old guard" at the time. Iwan was someone especially thankful to Rioch for getting him fitter. He also sowed the seeds for Wenger''s success at Arsenal after the George Graham era.

But there is a Managing Director. But there isn''t now a Director of Finance...... and so it goes on, and on, and on.
Here''s a thought. The overall financial benefits of the new structure are quite likely to be such that nobody will need to nit pick any longer.

Apart from the cheap options who other than cheap options could City hope to attract. Any manager with a reputation or one who gets a profile whilst doing the city job leaves for a better job e.g. Saunders, Walker and Lambert. We will only attract sub standard players, managers and coaches with our sub standard board. Until we manage to be an established top flight club this is always going to be the case.

And as becoming established Premier League is only an unlikely pipe dream we will continue to appoint cast offs, has beens or status climbers. Get used to it!

My original point was that othrr than prising a manager from a top Premier League side some supporters will label whoever is chosen as the cheap option. Truth is whoever is appointed is unlikely to be cheap in comparison to our peers, but as usual the perception will be otherwise

What is cheap though? £1m a year for a Head Coach equates to £20k a week, which is probably less than some of the senior players are on at the moment. That, in itself, might be one of our problems - senior players who don''t respect a ''cheap'' manager or coach.

It opens up a whole new opportunity for jibes about cheap options. "OMG, Stuart Webber from tinpot club Huddersfield. Huge lack of ambition. Should be going for Begiristain from Man City" [:D]
