we've seen the future today.

Yep, in a couple of years an away draw at Brentford will be considered an excellent result!

To see the future you merely need to look into the past. We''re heading back to the pre Lambert years in afraid, and with the owners future plans it''s looking grim

ABSOLUTELY agree with all of this.

The dying embers of the Lambert legacy are fading out.

We failed to capitalise on the special opportunity gifted to us and, with more and more Championship clubs selling out to big investors, we are settling into lower mid table obscurity.

It makes you realise what a true magician Paul Lambert was ... such a shame he left so soon.

It''s not Lambert leaving that was the problem it was when Mcnally left that our real troubles started.

Blah blah blah.

That wasn''t so bad.

A few positives to be had, but not from most negatives on this board.

He wasn''t the catalyst of it but he definately wasn''t the messiah he''s made out to be either.Parted company with every club he''s been at and not in the game presently. What is a chief exec if not a mouth piece for the board at any company?

people have maybe forgotten what''s its like to be a mid-table team, I dont think we''ve been one now (at least during the season) for a decade now as we''ve always been either trying to get out of a division or stay in one.

As Kelly Dalglish/Cates -whatever her name is pointed out after the game today, if you''re a team who can only beat bottom half teams but loses to the top half , then doesn''t it suggest that ,that is what we actually are?

FFS, snap out of it. If you want constant success go and support one of the big boys. We are NCFC, it''s all ups and downs and we will get through the downs

It''s what we do.

Don''t expect regular success.

I''d be happy if we emulated Stoke, Bournemouth or Watford though...

Progressive clubs establishing as one of the 20 best in the country with a real chance of cup success...

Well we did emulate bournemouth and Watford just a couple of years ago. Swansea did even better but I notice wanting to be them seems to have dried up.

We won''t ever progress to a side like Southampton or a Stoke whilst under the current ownership. This club is going backwards rapidly.

The future started last year early in the Premiership, retaining the Whittakers and Martins etc. As early in the season as Southampton away i could see the way we were headed, the Newcastle away game really cemented that imo.  But the main reason i always expected us to return to a mid table Champs side was not the players but the manager. Alex had enough newness and grit inside him to motivate the side to Wembley and promotion in those first 6 months, but ever since, we have seen him struggle, totally inept at finding a right formation and a regular starting 11, a situation that has continued thru nearly all of last season and now halfway thru this season. We will now see the breakup of the team, yes, season after season of mid table Champs football,  reality hits home when we realise we are joining our cousins in treading their path. AN has to go, sooner or later, and will, but the story is already written, we are here, and here is where we will be for the forseeable future, no matter what new manager we get in.But i knew this would happen so not so glum, we''ve found our natural position. Would only be really despondent if we went down again to L1 and the club once again found themselves in dire straights financially, something which is not, at this moment in time, not looking likely.

Cyclical? Or just some absolutely shocking transfer windows . ? Or is that the same thing ? Does Canos paint the dugouts now?

Essjayess, that is the best post i''ve read here for a long time.

It really wouldn''t have mattered if it had been Hughton, Adams or Neil... whoever the manager was we''ve been heading this way for a while...i feel for AN somewhat as it will always be seen as his failing, but the club has been heading this way for a long time.

For me the problems began the moment that we hired Hughton.

We ended that Lambert Prem season as a vibrant, dynamic and free scoring team with momentum. After Hughton''s first Christmas the magic dust had been shaken off and we deteriorated into a negative and paranoid pale shadow of our former selves. Just look at what happened to Grant Holt.

Keeping hold of Hughton for as long as we did wrecked any hope of building something sustainable from Lambert''s foundations.

We should have been more ambitious and looked beyond the Championship when it came to replacing Lambert ... with our star at its highest.

We would have been an exciting prospect for a more effective manager.

Clubs do indeed go through cycles of success and struggle bug that does not mean you should accept it being self inflicted or the club doing nothing to try and avoid it.

Agreed MP. I''ve been round this cycle many times and the thing that you take on board is that you have to make the most of the opportunities when they come. That''s even more important now that getting promoted gives such a huge boost to the clubs income, something that want always the case.

We had two wonderful chances recently and have blown both. The first when Lambert went was unfortunate because we did actually splash the cash in an attempt to stay up, but bought very badly.

The second opportunity when AN took us up has been squandered by allowing the guy to stay for far, far too long. The squad has become disjointed, has been lacking desparately in key areas for way too long with millions spent on players that can''t even make the bench. In short the chance has been a totally wasted and the main reason for failure is still here, possibly about to be given another transfer window to "develop the squad".

I understnd our level, which makes it so much more galling when we don''t have the balls at top level to take the tough decisions that would allow us to make most of our chances when they do come along.

We may find ourselves grateful for mid-table Champioship football. Once the parachute payment finishes next season we will sell, sell, sell to keep the debt within acceptable limits and could well slide into L1. There we will enjoy visits to old style grounds and advanced level Sunday parks football. At least the cook and her bag carrier will be able to flick their noses at those nasty PL rich kids.

Agreed Crafty. To reduce our wage bill to only 15m will require wholesale disposal of any player with a resale value and a considerable scaling back of the academy. Relegation to league one looks set to be the overarching narrative for the 17/18 season, and if the board fails to act soon, that relegation may come as early as May.
