the Murphy twins contacts

Why? You''re in a career that won''t usually last past that point and they will have paid in. It''s not like it''s coming from the tax payer, as far as I can see it is paid for by a levy on transfer fees.

Why is everyone looking at average wages for ''normal'' people and then comparing that to the very top end for football? The wages you are talking about are for the very best 500-odd footballers in the country for the PL, and then a further 650 for the champs. If you want a proper comparison, look at the average salaries of the top 1000 earners outside of the sporting/entertainment fields. You cannot compare the wages earned by people with very specific skills in very short supply with the wages earned by everyone else with no specialist skills, or skills with a decent supply in the market.

So, the correct comparison is the career total earnings for a top footballer compared to the career total earnings for a top lawyer or accountant or equity analyst in a bank. You have to be VERY high up the foodchain in football to do better than these top guys who have four times the average career length.

The average championship wage of £325k, for instance, is towards the bottom of what you can expect to earn as a partner in a big London professional practice (accountants, lawyers etc) and there are probably in excess of 6,000 of them. Do you get the picture?

I would get the picture if it were clear cut.

Everybody knows that when a professional footballer hangs up his boots (let''s say at 35) he then has every opportunity of following another career, as most do.

I am far from talking about a career in the media.

Besides, with their big wages they should be asset strong re: property and investments that would see them comfortable for life.

Players in the Prem and some in the Chump should be set for life if they manage their finances properly

There''s still a large number of lower league pro''s who are going to have to find a proper job when they hang up their boots.

Neither must we forget that any earnings over £150, 000 are taxed at the Additional Rate of 45%.

This means that you can lop off about 1/3 of earnings in tax for the average pro.

According to James Nursey, the Murphy''s new agent is asking for £15k per week for each of them. Although their contracts are up at the end of the season the club has a further one year option.

Nursey claims the lads are on a contract that increases their salary by £1k per week for every 5 appearances they make to a maximum of £10k per week. If they continue as they have started this week then £15k seems about right especially if we are in the EPL next season.

Pretty sure that Canos stalled on a new Liverpool contract because he wanted £10,000 a week, which they weren''t prepared to pay. I presume we did, in order to get him to sign.

Compared with that then £15,000 for the Murphey''s seems in the right ball park, considering there is Premiership interest in them and there wasn''t for Canos.

If we get promoted that will look like a bargain.  If not, I''ve no idea what our wages budget will be though.  And in most negotiations, you wouldn''t expect to settle at the other guy''s opening offer.

Having said that, the Murphys are players that make things happen , and that costs.  Let''s hope for some good news soon.

Just because they are twins we don''t have to give them the same contract. Jacob has done more than Josh this season to earn a big increase in wages although we need to be extending both of their contracts.

I''d guess for now we''d just use the one year option to give us more time to negotiate. Contract extensions are naturally more difficult for a yoyo club like ours as players want to know what division they will be playing in.

I certainly wouldn''t want it going down to the last season contract extension. I know it''s difficult to budget when we are unsure which league we''ll be in next season but it looks as obvious as it can be in football that they are going to make it.

@Hairy

I''d rather not but it might not be up to us. It could be a case that the Murphy''s want us to get promoted before committing their future to us. They might want reassurances that if we do get promoted that they''ll get the chance to prove they can do it at Premier League level.

It''s the same reason there was no chance of us extending Redmond this summer as he wasn''t signing a new contract with a Championship team and the same reason Martin Olsson won''t be signing a new contract this season.

We can afford £15k a week whether we are championship or prem next season. Our top players will be on at least double that I suspect.

Whether they are worth it is a different question, Josh in particular based on what he has done this season so far, but if an established prem club wants them then they will pay them £25k a week without blinking so if we want to fend off interest we probably won''t have any choice.

With our apparent inability to compete financially even in the championship as revealed by the last transfer window, it will be interesting to see if the board has a strategy to retain our key assets:
