morty 0 Posted September 30, 2016 Sounds very much to me that the inability to close down Shelvey, and stop him delivering the defence splitting passes was definitely an issue.Heres something I''ll throw into the ring, is it possible that they were just better than us?I mean, could that happen? paul moy 235 Posted September 30, 2016
People saying that it was bringing on an extra defender that brought on the onslaught for the last 10 minutes seem to be forgetting the first half hour. Newcastle got cross after cross into our box and we were lucky that they struggled with the finish. During that period we couldn''t really get out of our half or hold onto the ball, so why do you think that would have been different had we kept a young lad with pace who was probably getting a bit knackered after being ''our only outlet'' for the previous 80 minutes and isn''t the best at getting back at the best of times...
That would be a standard opening for Newcastle at home, so to be expected. We did well to weather the storm but totally conceding all initiative in the final 15-20 minutes was ''suicidal''.

No I am not , and I know we are second in league but I believe it is the quality of the squad that is making that happen. So they reverted to normal tactics and before you know it we are three one up!! Enough said."Let me get this right: we are second in the league because of the "quality" of the squad, but this quality squad haven''t actually got enough "quality" to adjust to tactics other than their normal ones? You may be right; our squad may actually be rather devoid of quality and reliant on doing well what they are familiar and comfortable with.

nutty nigel 7,509 Posted September 30, 2016
Morty, it would make me feel better if you actually truly reflected what I wrote, rather than me having to second guess you.I have evidence re the way he conducts himself, do I have evidence the result would have been any different, no, never said I did, in fact said the opposite in another thread we debated in.Maybe I could make a request of you Morty, please read what I write carefully.
This is the thing Ray I haven''t heard this interview in it''s entirity just your bits taken from it. We both heard Wednesday nights interview in full conducted by the excellent Chris Goreham. The comments here don''t truly reflect what he said about the players and winning headers. I thought he spoke rationally and well. Especially considering he had to come out minutes after the event. Reading some views on this messageboard it seems it''s ok for us to be irrational for a lot longer. And we are under a miniscule amount of the pressure he is. So I''m assuming you are referring to another interview so is there a link bearing in mind what you said to Morty?

Ginja 26 Posted September 30, 2016 Top stuff from AN, talking alot of sense. Too many people on this board claiming they know better after the game is done. The fact is our players did not do their jobs well enough, nothing wrong going 5 at the back but you need your players to perform at the end of day.
? 0 Posted September 30, 2016 I agree with with what Ray has said in the OP, and were generally my thoughts as well. To me he seems to be abdicating his responsibilities and trying to justify his mistake in taking our main attacking threat off for a defender. Fine, if Murphy was knackered do a like for like, we had players on the bench available to do that job. He then says he wasn''t happy at 4 v 4 at the back but by that very reason Newcastle would have been short defensively and would have afforded more attacking chances for us had we had some pace left on the field. Not happy that he seems to be trying to deflect the blame onto the players and I would think some of those players would feel the same. We''ll see what happens tomorrow, I just hope we don''t suffer a confidence crisis as we did the last time we lost at SJP! westcoastcanary 0 Posted September 30, 2016 Crisis of confidence? I''m more worried about fitness and the draining effect of Wednesday evening, physically and mentally. I''d expect to see some changes for that reason alone.

? 0 Posted September 30, 2016 Nutty, the after game interview is readily available on YouTube, didn''t you see it? Also quotes on this site with his written press interviews and today''s press conference are also readily available. Hope this helps.
nutty nigel 7,509 Posted September 30, 2016 Is it different to the one Iinked to Ron. Becaue I''m sure you''ll agree selected quotes don''t reflect that. Which is my point.
? 0 Posted September 30, 2016 Don''t reflect what Nutty? He said he didn''t feel comfortable with it being 4 v 4 at the back so he took off our attacking threat pace wise and went defensive. My feeling is that had he gone like for like on the substitution it would have put more pressure on them to keep a more defensive approach. He has continued to defend the subsitution in a manner that I have never seen from him before in his admonishment of the defense. To invite pressure on our defense was a mistake in my humble opinion, and an opinion is all it is!
Ray 111 Posted September 30, 2016 Hi Westcoast,Haven''t replied because I''ve been tied up doing something else for the last 4 hours or so, but my choice would have been Bennett.Morty,Just repeating I have no evidence doesn''t change the fact that I do, but if it makes you feel better to believe I haven''t then carry on. I will however, in some vain attempt to find ''middle'' ground, alter my stance to; I have evidence on which my opinion is based.I am not prepared to give details, so posters have a number of choices, either accept what I say as face value, ignore it as someone who knows bu88er all or choose not to read what I post.Nutty,I took the words as quoted from today''s EDP, I also added if you genuinely feel, which of course he may not and I have heard the post match interview.Anyway, livened up an otherwise quiet day on here. The fact is our players did not do their jobs well enough, nothing wrong going 5 at the back but you need your players to perform at the end of day.
These defenders have proved time and time again that they cannot do their jobs. There was an opportunity in the summer to have a clearout of the back four most of whom are badly scarred by two EPL relegations. However, there is no one on the Board who scrutinises what is going on and leads from the front to make things change for the better in the right areas.Alex Neil is still a young manager and needs coaxing in the right direction by an intelligent director. But we have no such person because the Board give all the appearance of being AWOL at all times.Alex Neil has strengths and weaknesses. He does not have much of a contact book within the game so player recruitment is not his forte. This weakness is compounded by the shambolic football board which ought to be scrapped. I wish Ian Culverhouse could be brought back to the club as he had an eye for a good player and was a coach in the Davy Williams mould. The structure of the football club needs sorting out from top to bottom as all the constituent parts are dysfunctional and the club is not at all realising its full potential. nutty nigel 7,509 Posted September 30, 2016 Thanks Ray. I''m still not sure if these were quotes taken from the post match interview, a separate interview or a combination of both. Ray 111 Posted September 30, 2016 Morty,I know what the definitions are, so that was a waste of your time but to expand;opinionəˈpɪnjən/noun1.1.a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. As it says Morty, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge, so by definition can be and in my case is - thanks for helping me make my point, appreciate that.In answer to your question. I have never said AN is a bad manager, here and elsewhere I have said he is young and still learning, although I do feel he could learn a bit quicker, I have also said elsewhere that I want him to succeed, it''s a bit like he is in the development squad of managers and I sincerely hope he goes on to become a valued member of the first team, some do, some don''t as we know. However, I do feel he could some things better, it is that I have evidence, or if you prefer knowledge, of, I also feel he has a lot to learn, well why wouldn''t he he''s a novice so to speak. So on that basis being second in the league is irrelevant cos I''m not saying he is a bad manager, I am however saying he could be a whole lot better. I have also said elsewhere that I sincerely hope that someone at the club recognises this and provides the support he needs, he of course needs to accept he needs it and I have no evidence either way on that point.
