Penalties

Recommended Posts

Perhaps the game could take a leaf out of the American Football book and introduce a seventh place on the bench for penalty specialists who only come on to take penalties and otherwise have no participation in the game.

You wouldn''t need to be particularly fit for this role so clubs could run half-time competitions for fans to be selected as the penalty specialist. :)

Didn''t see the point in brady taking it today.

If you want someone to place it stick with Wes, you want someone to smash it choose Jerome.

The outcomes will probably be roughly the same anyway

I''d like to see a replay but from my seat it looked like a well hit pen and a very good save. Seems Alex Neil thought so too judging by Paddy Davits tweets.

Hee hee Budapest. Football eh?

In my defence though - when I saw that Brady was about to take it today I said to the bloke next to me: "He''s really not having a good game, I think he''ll miss".

When he did that ludicrous dancing on tip toes thing at the beginning of his run up I knew for certain that he was going to miss.

Was a well enough taken penalty, he''s probably been practicing all week. Not his day today.

I thought it was the perfect height for a keeper to save based on him diving the right way which he did. Brady was very disappointing today, worked hard but seems ineffective. If in doubt smash it!

When I saw Brady take the ball I was not getting ready to celebrate a goal. The penalty summed up his whole game - poor and lacking conviction.

Yep, with the likes of Naismith, Pritchard, Josh and Canos all after game time Brady needs to step it up a gear.
I agree his pen was fairly well hit, but not well enough, obviously.

as a left footer such as Brady ,the natural instinct is to hit the ball accross your body to generate the most power which would go to the goalkeepers left. a goalkeeper when seeing a left footer stepping up up knows this but also knows that the taker knows this, so what we see is what happened today is that Brady tries to second guess that and put it in the opposite corner....but in doing so sacrifices power for accuracy.

just blast it as hard as you can down the middle and have done with it !!...

Well at least we managed to score from one last night. Well done Dorrans.

In a funny sort of way I don''t think his penalty was any better than the previous two which Wes and Brady missed. By which I mean I think that if the Newcastle goalie had dived the right way he would probably have saved it.

(Obviously I know that Dorrans penalty WAS better because he scored and the previous two missed/were saved).

Might be wrong but wasn''t the last time, until last night, that we scored a penalty was in the game against Liverpool, a game that ended so similarly to last night? Might be best if we missed the next one!

Good spot Ron.

Yes - quite perverse. We''ve lost the last two games in which we''ve scored a penalty and won the last two games in which we''ve missed a penalty.

So Dorrans has now scored 3 out of 3 - so far so good.

But it''s still been quite a while since we actually won a game in which we scored a penalty.

To be fair, of the three that were saved, only Naismith''s was a poor one - not right in the corner, and a good height for a keeper. Very rarely do you see a keeper stay in the middle, nine times out of ten Pritchard''s goes in. And the save from Brady''s was absolutely world class.

Pritchards penalty was a nervous attempt to say the least.

If the keeper ''read'' it, fair play to him. But I still think ''top middle'' is the most likely position for a penalty to end up in the net.
