Don''t worry, between now and Saturday the team will work solely on the ''park the bus'' option on Fifa

Not a bad idea, in all seriousness. We replaced Holt with Irvine (a winger in his playing days, I believe), and McAvoy has no track record to speak of whatsoever. There must be a coach out there somewhere who would be able to offer some support to Neil, as clearly the defence is a recurring problem.

Hughton and Calderwood.

Adams and ?? (Gary Holt perhaps?), Mike Phelan?

Neil and Gary Holt, Phelan (briefly), Frank Mcavoy.

None of them could (or can ) fix the obvious underlying issue. The defensive players aren''t good enough any more. Two relegations, both foreseeable. Yes, we''ve had Wembley promotion and all that, but the problem still remains and doesn''t seem to be getting any better.

Is it just that the defensive players aren''t good enough, or are they playing a system that either doesn''t work or they don''t understand.

Defensive players not good enough VW. 3 managers and coaching teams cant all be getting it wrong.

i think klose, bennett and olsson are good enough, if pinto can learn to play like olsson he will do well, hes clearly got the pace to get forwardbutmartin, bassong, turner, whittaker were finished 18 months back if not before

they arent really bad but ultimately if you cant hold a lead its either the players or managers fault, at some point you have to acknowledge your weakness, and its clearly been basic defending for god knows how long now, so if Alex cant organise them the club needs to hire a specialist who can, especially if they arent willing to invest in higher quality players

While a defensive coach could improve matters, any impact would be limited unless the appointment heralded a shift in mindset. There has to be acceptance that success is built on sound defence and that clean sheets matter. Setting out to play attractive, attacking football is fine as long as "based on solid defence" is taken for granted, even if left unstated. It''s not a matter of becoming more "defensive" and less "attacking". It''s a matter of defending well when you need to, and attacking well when opportunity arises, of everyone being equally committed to, and focussed on, both. It''s no good complaining about defensive frailty while at the same time rejecting the prioritisation of sound defence.
Bring Gunn back, he knew how to organise a back four.
Sorry, but this just illustrates the problem. It''s not a matter of simply "organising the back four". It''s a matter of the entire team being focussed on negating the attacking threat when the opposition have the ball, set pieces being just a special case.

I think we need a change of personnel in defence, but don''t ask me who to single out.

On paper it looks good. In practise it amounts to one of the most fragile defences in the league.

For a time on Tuesday I was thinking that the defence looked quite solid ie. like a normal Championship defence rather than the row of quivering jelly-fish that we have become used to seeing with the ''Saturday'' team.

Then it was business as usual.

When Wood was introduced I just expected him to score. Our defensive frailties have turned Chris Wood into a Luis Suarez style figure of fear.

A new and commanding central defender and and a proper full-back are now required, asap.

"a proper full-back."

Ron Ashman, Bryan Thurlow, Joe Mullet, Ian Culverhouse, Mark Bowen, Daryl Sutch (oops!)

I''s about time that we cashed in on Olsson, imo. Him, or his agent, seem always to be holding the Club to some sort of ransom.

Sometimes he flatters to deceive. Get a proper defender in, not a prima donna defensive question mark.

The money and a proper defending full-back would serve the Club better, IMO.

All those "proper defending full backs likely, primarily played 4-4-2. A massive part of the formation we play now relies on our fullbacks bombing forward, it''s a completely different skillset. Fullbacks " back in the day" rarely crossed the half way line.

And I really can''t understand why we would want rid of Olson.

Then we haven''t been very good in dealing with that completely different ''skillset.''

This thread is about our current defensive frailties after all.

Olson (sic) is a notable player, but perhaps he''s worth more to us in the transfer market than on the pitch.

A change of personnel is needed. Where would you begin?

If it''s broke, fix it.

Nothing is set in stone, including Martin Olsson''s role in the left back slot.

By and large we have the same defenders as our last promotion season when we conceded 48. We are on course to concede 20 more than that. Our style of play is too open and we are missing the midfield bite of Johnson this time around. I don''t think coaching is the issue more style and certain players. That is a management issue but Neil has shown in the past his sides can defend or was that second half of our promotion season a lucky one off

I think our defence is good enough for this league. For me the basic issue is tracking runners from midfield, and also our midfielders dropping deeper to cover when a fullback attacks. We seem to make the switch between attacking and defending, hard work. We need to be a bit more streetwise, and maybe patient in attack.

We could change to 4-4-2 and likely be much more defensively solid, but score less goals.

And we don''t have 2 strong enough midfielders to accommodate a change anyway. Another issue us always wanting Wes in the team, who really doesn''t play well in a 4-4-2.

Alex Neil is correct when he says that we are missing experience in midfield.

Is the problem how we play, or how we play with 15 minutes to go when we are already leading?

could we have more than one style of play?

I like the way we play so I guess the question is do we hold our nerve or tear it up and start again? After all for the time being the questions seem to be about whether our current form can carry on more than about it not working...

I also like the attacking approach, with both full backs getting forward. To play it successfully though, we need a mobile and athletic DM and at least one decent centre back, preferably with pace to complement Klose.

Bennett and possibly Martin just about OK as cover, Bassong, Turner and Whits can go.

We''d obviously need to tie up Olsson to a longer deal.

A clone of Don Howe would do nicely.

i think the style is ok , but at the end of the day if you cant hold onto the lead due to lack of nerve, concentration, stamina or tactical nous then those thing need to be worked on

it looks psychological as much as anything, players look like they are expecting it happen every game and then bottle it

Who exactly is inexperienced in our midfield? Not Dorrans, not Tettey, not Howson, not Brady, not Naismith, not Wes, not Pritchard, (though young, he has plenty of experience at this level). Murphys yes, Canos yes, but no more so than Redmond who they''ve replaced. I don''t think we are lacking experience; what we lack is wiser heads on shoulders. If those players haven''t developed wiser heads after all the experience they''ve accumulated, Pritchard apart they are not likely to do so now.
