THE SIMPLE TEST FOR A GOOD (NOT NECESSARILY A GREAT) MANAGER

Recommended Posts

That by dint of...

tactical nouse
determining a playing formation/style to best suit players
logical team selections
good team preparation
inspired transfer dealings
motivational qualities
adaptability - ability to think on feet at key moments
vision - prepared to consider the unorthodox

...the team as an entity plays demonstrably better than the sum of its component parts.

(Typical exemplar B. Clough at Nottm Forest)

I''ll leave it for others to assess whether N.W. matches some/any of this criteria.

Your not wrong Bernard !    Nigel should  take  Clough`s autobiography to bed , and read it !

Clough , with the help of his mentor Peter Taylor,  knew all about  his players... in depth !!   their families , their weaknesses and strengths ....  their personal problems , he even  had newbies live with his family until  they found  a place !  he took them for  trips abroad  during the season , boozed with them [ maybe a little too much ! ]   , to Clough , his players were his extended family  ....  the result  was a team of " brothers "  who played FOR each other  , nobody was  a favourite in Clough`s book   ,  his training sessions  usually consisted of   skill  practice  and  a laugh  , never would he apply  this " work ethic " so admired by Nigel  !!!!!

Food for thought Nige ?

All true, but he was an exceptional manager. I''m sure about 50 clubs would want a Clough-type manager now.
