Alex Neil must sort out firepower if we are to make a Premier League return

Recommended Posts

It’s clear that relegation is never a great thing and every club that goes through it will face a period of uncertainly. It tends to be difficult to make an instant return to the Premier League following relegation – but it was something that Norwich City managed to achieve last time they played at this level.

Last time, the club achieved the feat via the play-offs but they would clearly love to make things easier for themselves this time around. Alex Neil is clearly a talented young manager and would have learned a lot from his failures last season. At the time of writing, he has managed to keep the majority of his squad together.

The only major departure has been Nathan Redmond, but there is continued uncertainty over the likes of Robbie Brady and Martin Olsson. Sergi Canos has been signed as a replacement for Nathan Redmond and Michael McGovern has also come in to provide competition for John Ruddy. Overall, I think the squad is looking in fairly good shape – but there is still one significant hole.

It’s fairly clear that the main priority this summer was to sign a proven Championship goalscorer and that issue remains ongoing. Last season, Norwich decided to sell Gary Hooper and Lewis Grabban and Ricky van Wolfswinkel has finally left the club. The only senior strikers that the club now have is Kyle Lafferty and Cameron Jerome.

It’s highly unlikely that Lafferty will get his opportunity as Alex Neil doesn’t seem keen on him, so really that just leaves Jerome as a credible option. Even Jerome comes on the back of a poor season in the Premier League so his confidence will be low. Strikers have been linked and Ross McCormack is a likely target – but so far no agreement has been reached with that one.

The transfer window has some time to go but the season is now starting, so really Alex Neil will want to get players in as quickly as he can. It’s fair to say that Norwich haven’t yet signed as many players as most fans would have liked, but that gives opportunities to players to stake their claim. As the striker search goes on, I’m interested to see if the Murphy twins can make an impact on the team along with James Maddison; pre-season also suggests that Ben Godfrey could be one worth keeping an eye on.

Not sure if you know, but McCormack signed for Aston Villa.

Its funny you still think we could get promoted with this squad that currently boasts a solitary frontman or that Alex Neil is a talented manager that I presume is based on first 6 months not last 12. The drugs do work.
