How serious are we?

Recommended Posts

Trying to sign player''s on the cheap just won''t work especially for a club like ours, if anything we need to pay over the odds to guarantee to get the deal done before we alert other club''s to our interest and the numerous other reasons we have been given in our difficulties in completing deals. Strangely though we do expect top dollar for our players. We can''t have it both ways. As i believe Steve Bruce said put up or shut up (actually i think i just made that up, but you get my drift). If we want to buy an Aston then dont expect to be paying Escort prices.

Well, selling our best players for top dollar, else keeping them, is surely a sensible move.

Likewise, paying the lowest possible fee for the players we want to buy is a sensible move.

Only kidding. CLUB''S IN CRISIS.

We shouldn''t be paying Aston prices for Escorts either and the fact the club has done that a few times over the last 3-4 seasons means they''re not going to easily let it happen again despite demands to do so.

Bearing in mind we failed to do enough correct transfer business 12months ago to equip ourselves for the premiership, why do people now think we are ready to spend big on trying to return?

What if our current squad is, on the whole, plenty good enough for the Championship? What if we are targeting three specific players rather than bulk buying mediocrity?

What if people at the club know what they are doing?

Bournemouth seem to have adopted the policy of over-paying for the players their manager has targeted and they seem to have come a long way very quickly.

Whether this elevation is ephemeral remains to be seen but it does all seem directly related to another thread running on here about us being left behind due to the fact that so many ''lesser'' clubs are now owned by far wealthier backers than we have.

For the time being I feel most of us will settle for the status quo but a drift back to the Grant, Roeder, Gunn years of mediocrity, decline and debt would surely herald widespread discontent.

In the meantime, I would not recommend us following the ''Bournemouth model'' just yet, but would be unhappy if we were to miss out on, for example, Assombalonga, for the sake of a couple of million. Of course we need to try to get the best deal possible, as all do.

In for a penny etc. and our aim should be a quick return whilst we still have a squad full of near PL standard players and are supported by the parachutes.

A a lot of eggs should be put into that one basket whilst we remain in a position whereby we can still benefit from a degree of risk.

I think of us as a bit like wheeler dealers. Buy cheap, spend some time doing it up a bit and sell for a healthy profit.

Well, Canos and Maddison don''t seem in the RVW mould but exciting young players keen to make an impact ....not sure what kinds of car make! I think keeping Klose (as looks possible) and the nucleus of the team with talent such as the above two. Plus one proven striker, means we are serious.

I have stated on here I feel we are due a year of relative consolidation and I have a low confidence level and expectations about the coming season. It''s my way of getting used to any under-performance well beforehand so I am not the kind to steamroller into the team when they are outside of the top 6 early doors. But ........such recruitment like Canos (and Maddison) starts to challenge my pessimism I have to say

i agree with what you are saying with the young players coming in a hopefully shifting some deadwood players on

my concern is AN a Manager that has failed for most of last season

which AN will we get this year ? one that came in the championship and got us up ? the fantastic manager

or the rabbit in the headlights chop changing tactic man we had last season ? making mistakes and costing us points

i think more than any player that is the most important part this season

Each year we look for at least one outstanding player who will turn a match by his own skills. Each year we sign a vast number of good players, or formerly good players, especially central midfielders.

The exceptions are clearly Redmond and probably Brady, but some of our signings seem to disappear without trace, and money is squandered.

It is true that we have some promising youngsters, but they may prove to be very good or rather average. As we don''t seem able to spot real talent, I fear for the club in the short term and in the long.

Canos scored 7 goals and 8 assists in 18 starts and 20 sub appearances for struggling Brentford in the Championship last season - quite similar to Redmond when he first joined us at a similar price from Brum. With him added, we will have quite a ''team'' of young, hungry players:

Matthews (GK), Toffolo (LB), Thompson (DM), McGrandles, Cantwell & Godfrey (CM), Canos & Jacob Murphy (WR), Josh Murphy (WL), Maddison (AM), Morris (S)

AN has spoken of building a squad and this is an important part of that. This is the route we should be going, IMO.
