Squad Numbers.

Recommended Posts

@Indy

I think Bethnal is right- traditionally in the UK 6 has been a center back and 4 a midfielder. I read ''Inverting the pyramid'' by Jonathan Wilson and he said it was due to how formations evolved- teams used to not have midfielders (and always wear 1-11) and the evolution of the formation meant that number 4 was the position that moved up into midfield. Apparently it''s different in other countries because they favoured other tactics.

Nerdy but interesting.

@Bethnal

Unless he particularly chose 31 it does look like he''s in the little list of ''expendables'' down the bottom doesn''t it?

Doh - number blind... 33

In the 30s looks like possible loans - jacob happy to take the possible unfavourable Redmond comparison.

Interesting Dorrans up to 4 - think and hope he will be more influential this season, not have the same ball carrying box to box ability of Howson but do like how quickly he moves the ball.

Olsson and Brady assigned the same numbers as last year, potentially staying then.

Every first team player at the club has been allocated a number, it doesn''t mean Vadis or anyone else is staying.

Olsson was 23 last year. Maybe telling he''s now 3. Opposite to how Brady has stayed at 12, with 11 available, as he''s been 11 elsewhere in his career.

Klose 15 as he confirmed the other day, he was 15 at Nurnberg and has been either 4 or 15 for Switzerland.

Interesting that 9 and 16 have intentionally been left free. I wonder who will fill those numbers in the coming weeks, hopefully at least one if not two new strikers!

As for missing players; Godfrey and McGrandles must be going out on loan then as not assigned a number.

Oh good. Based on that, Dorrans will be one of the first names on the teamsheet every week. That''s something to look forward to, then.

Well on that logic Tettey (#27) and Pinto (#25) must be back-up players!

Not at all.

Tettey obviously favours 27, it''s been his number since he joined us.

Dorrans however has been shuffled around closer to the 1-11 and now he''s reached the golden number for defensive midfielders. The Makelele.

Though of course, it takes a lot more than an eye for a sideways pass and a talent for row P goal attempts to make a Makelele.

Looking at that list, big squad innit? Wonder what they''ll cut it down to, number wise.

Fuzzar, it''s a long season, so a big squad certainly isn''t a bad thing as there''s no 25 man limit in the Champ remember. I reckon it''s make or break year for a lot of those players further down the list such as the Murphy''s, Toffolo and Morris. Especially if we get promoted at the end of the season, if they aren''t on the fringes of the first team at least then they''ll do well to get in the 25 next year.

Grant Holt is suggesting ( via Twitter) that the No. 9 has been retired, coated in gold and presented to him. :)

Well deserved!

Todd Cantwell will be disappointed. He did well in the few pre-season and U23 games he has played. I know he was hoping for a 1st team breakthrough this season.
