Lack of goal scorer

Recommended Posts

Not really anything new is it that we need a decent striker to turn losses into draws, draws to wins.If we had defoe today we would have won it really is that simple. We had more of the ball, more corners more shots etc. They had a striker who had scored 15 goals this season. Simple.Nasmith is not a goalscorer who will get 15 goals a season, never has been. Our other frontmen were never going to come close to 10goals.A good goalscorer is not the only answer to survive in this league but it just makes it harder on the rest of the team if you haven''t. Next time spend some dosh and get one!

Would''ve been interesting to see how we would''ve faired if we had signed Afobe in January as he was clearly are number 1 target all summer.

Bamford clearly isn''t a player to play up top on his own in a struggling premier league side.

Mbokani has done ok. Was awesome vs Newcastle but how was he in the games leading up to that and after that.

Jerome you only have to look at his prem record and the chances he has missed. A good player at champ level.

Naismith is a player I''ve always liked and thought would''ve been a great asset and certainly a player you would want in a relegation battle. BIt he has been very poor. A decent performance in his debut vs Liverpool and a half decent performance vs Newcastle and that is it. Certainly hasn''t been more than a 6 out of 10 in his other games.

We paying for a disaster in the summer having no head of recruitment etc in place.

I said in another thread somewhere, the difference between us and Sunderland is quite simply Defoe. I think they''ll end up staying up because of him. 12 goals so far this season. None of our strikers are capable of scoring that many!

I think we suffered from the whole Grabban affair too, we should have ditched him in the summer and used the money to push for Afobe.

We effectively have run this season with 2 striking options; Jerome who really should be a squad player at this level and Mbokani who shows glimpses of talent, but almost suffers from our lack of ideas and eagerness to go route 1.

The fact that out of Hooper, Grabban, lafferty and Bamford they have mustered 1 goal between, of our other striking alternatives also tells a tale. Who really has there been to push Jerome or Mbokani?

It does show just how underrated Holty was in our team in the premiership!

Trouble with a 15 goal a season striker is you need to have the players around him to creat the chances too and a manager with that game plan. It''s not as easy to just buy a striker and think he''ll score 15 goals because he''s done it once for a previous team.

We always knew that Jerome would probably not score enough goals in the PL - his record at that level speaks for itself. We took a gamble on Mbokani but it is obvious that scoring regularly in places like Belgium etc does not translate into PL goals especially if you can''t provide him with the right service. After his cracking goal against Newcastle he has barely mustered a decent shot in the last two games.Although I didn''t rate Hooper as an overall player you cannot deny that he has an eye for goals & my feeling is that he may have got on the end of something when the ball was flying around in the Sunderland box in the first 20 minutes yesterday. But in reality his lack of mobility meant that he was never going to fit into the bigger picture and hence he was never going to start games. The trouble we have had is that because of a lack of quality in some other positions our strikers have been required to carry out other tasks rather than simply being a goal hanger & sticking the ball in the net and the fact is that you cannot be in two places at the same time. The failure to take a chance with Lafferty during our baron run was probably a mistake because we continued to gamble on Mbokani and/or Jerome coming good and it hasn''t paid off.At the end of the day, and for one reason or another, we have restricted ourselves to using two strikers both of whom had big question marks against them before a ball was kicked this season. And of course we had exactly the same scenario at CB until we signed Klose.
