Four out of Five

Recommended Posts

So we have been a Premier league side for four of the last five seasons yet we still have a Championship Squad. Why is that?

That is actually a good question!!

During that time we have had 3 managers! Makes you think where the fault lies?? Manager or up top? The manager is always the easy option and due to contracts is never allowed to say how it is! Neil will be here next season because he fits all the boards requirements and not necessarily what is best for the club!

Because we''re skint and it''s nobody''s fault either.

Yep, no money in the Prem and nobody could possibly take any blame.

Well we spunked £8m on RVW, £8m on naismith, £8m on Klose (injured) and our biggest ever wages on Mulumbu. A club as poor and small time as us can''t get away with such shocking deals and hope to be a premiership team.

Poor recruitment and our inadequate strategic and structural organisation to deliver a good transfer window has to be one of the big problems for a club like us.its a good investing the the academy and signing young kids with great potential but these things have to be capable of making a difference. In our case they haven''t.

As we now head for the Champs that will read as 2 seasons out of 3 in the Champs, which sounds much more realistic.

Same keepers, ruddy about where he was, rudd more experienced, same defence plus klose, worse midfield but similar given that redmond and brady will probs go and wes is older, worse up top having lost Hooper and Grabban. See what summer brings.

The Board need to carry out Root and branch review of the club this close season to include:

The recruitment process that seems to result in extended transfer negotiations before signings are made and often signings of inadequate quality or fitness.

The coaching quality which might be OK for the Scottish leagues but are not fit for purpose in the English game. The same poor decision making and mistakes are made over and over in games this season so just what are the coaches doing on the training ground?

The playing squad needs to be pruned of the deadwood taking the money but making very little contribution to the cause. We have young players who need to be given the opportunity to prove if they have what it takes.

The manager who has been badly shown up this season due to his lack of experience at this level. Does he really know his best eleven or is the tinkering going to be a feature again next season. He deserves a chance to put it right but this should be under constant review and if we are not figuring strongly early next season then his position might well become untenable.
Yeah! None of this happens at other clubs does it?
not at most premiership clubs. They figure it out and that''s why they are staying up and we aren''t. They don''t twiddle their thumbs and say "oh maybe next year". They take action.

Case in point Sunderland. Had the likes of Billy Jones, Virgini, Rodwell, Buckley, Wes Brown and co in their line up, realised they were all full on shite and bought in some quality players and now look.

It''s a shame we have wasted the riches and been unable to build a decent PL squad over the 5 years period. Multiple reasons for this but the key is recruitment failure, it''s astonishing that we have been so poor at the one thing that would bring us success. It''s why I keep harping on about last summer and why it made me so angry, if we were properly run we would never have been in the mess for the summer window that we were.

As a squad and a club we haven''t progressed from the first promotion under Lambert. I think many on here realised when the summer window closed that our dealings were inadequate. The entire recruiting and scouting process should be ripped apart and started again as it''s clear its failed for several years

Because we''re god awful at signing players for some reason.

I''ve said before that the last transfer window that had more hits than misses was probably the first one under Hughton. Since then it has been awful.

I actually think our biggest missed opportunity to improve the squad was the summer in the Championship. We were for once a team with more spending power than most in our division and should have been able to cherry pick some of the best up coming players from the Championship and League One. Instead we spent all our money on journeymen and cloggers (particularly upfront) who while they helped us get out of the division were never going to do it at the next level. So while we ended up with Grabban, Bournemouth got Callum Wilson who despite injuries has scored as many goals as our top scorer this season and is now probably worth 5 times what Bournemouth paid for him.
