Katie Borkins 1 Posted January 23, 2016 I wouldn''t want to face him when he''s extremely angry...“I don’t really know what to say to be honest. I am angry, extremely angry and so should the players be with themselves,” said Neil. “They should feel that and more when you throw a game away. Defensively we made extremely poor decisions and cost ourselves three points. The players were not being asked to do anything differently and we failed to make correct decisions at vital times in the game and it cost us goals. I think you look at it after 65 minutes of the game we get ourselves to a stage where we are 3-2 up and good value for it. I thought we were the better side and from that point onwards you could see we got into a mindset where we had to do something different.“I think people’s lasting memory of this game now will be what happened in the last 25 minutes, which is a real shame when you consider how well we moved the ball, we looked threatening and we defended relatively comfortably. Then we transpired to be the makers of our own downfall. We looked edgy, nervous at the back, we didn’t keep the ball well enough and basically didn’t defend our box well enough.“Even when we got it back to 4-4 I didn’t really celebrate because I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing and they go and get a fifth. The problem is when you are standing at the side you have had your main influence at the interval. You are stood there, 3-1 up, and the boys had done great. Then for no apparent reason we made poor decisions.”

OldRobert 38 Posted January 23, 2016 "The problem is when you are standing at the side you have had your main influence at the interval."..............and our problem, or one of them, is we have had no leaders to influence what happens on the pitch during the game. Yellowbeagle 0 Posted January 23, 2016 He can expect the team to do their jobs better than they did, but any manager who plays only two proven defensive players at this level and one of those being R Martin against Liverpool probably should take his even share of the blame for the disgraceful defending we saw today. This was self inflicted today.

Rich T The Biscuit 562 Posted January 23, 2016 One thing he did fail to do was change our shape when Liverpool started to get on top.In the first half we closed them down very quickly and made it hard for Liverpool to play, in the second half they did the exact same thing to us, he needed to change the system to allow us more time and because we have players at the back who are not comfortable enough on the ball, it makes them panic and give the ball away, it wasn''t just Martin as Bassong is the same.In a centre half you need one of 4 things, height/ability to win the ball in the air, pace to get back, ability to read the game and composure with the ball at your feet, ideally you want more than 1.The problem for Martin is that he doesn''t score high enough in any one of these for this level of football.Bassong only scrapes through based on his pace and he wins more headers.Although Ray will be in in a minute with stats from some website

Neil stood there and watched as Liverpool scored 3 goals in the second half when our back 4 was on the ropes and did nothing to try to prevent it.he could have easily have brought Klose on then ..but how bad/unfit must Mulumbu currentky be if he was entrusted to come on and help shield the back 4??? Hairy Canary 628 Posted January 23, 2016 It seemed obvious we needed to change our a shape when Liverpool got back to three two. Surely Kloser should have come on to make here centre halves with Brady and Pinto playing as wing backs. He can be justifiably angry with what was happening but happening it was and he should have changed it..

hogesar 9,503 Posted January 24, 2016 Everyone criticising ANs team selection seems to conveniently be missing the fact that the same team had us 3-1 up against Liverpool. The fact the entire defence then started to go walkabout is nothing to do with team selection.

How can the team selection be credited with us being 3-1 up but not the ensuing collapse?
ZLF 261 Posted January 24, 2016 The extent of the collapse from the back 6 outfield players in the last 30 mins could not have been predicted, even ifthe culprits errors could. We have to use the new signingsPinto Bassong Klose Brady TetteyInsanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Katie Borkins 1 Posted January 24, 2016 I was a little surprised we didn''t put more steel into the side when taking off Wes and Redmond, e.g. one of Odidja or Mulumbu. Of course, it is easy to say so after the event. Not sure what''s up with Mulumbu, to be honest - I was looking forward to seeing him rival Tettey for first choice DM. Jacko 0 Posted January 24, 2016 He''s got a right to be angry in all honesty. For all this team''s flaws this season, the one we do very well is close out a game when we do actually get in front. I think West Ham is the only game I can recall before yesterday where we''ve chucked away a lead once being ahead. There was just a general lack of common sense and leadership to our play after going 3-1 up. The term game management is often over used but it was relevant here. We needed to really slow the game down after that 3rd goal and prevent Liverpool from getting a foothold in the game. Instead we played in the same manner with the full backs high and a lot of space in between the lines of the midfield and centre of the defence. The worrying thing is how we have appeared to have regressed in this department after it looked like we had eradicated these issues around Christmas.
