SSN: Norwich are waiting for an answer over their bid to sign Chelsea''s rising star Patrick Bamford, reports the Daily Mirror.

The report suggests Alex Neil has made a permanent move to sign the 22-year-old, who is interested in a move to Carrow Road.

Lots of rumours gathering pace re Bamford, I would love him here, think him and Naismith would be a great combination

I''d like him here too, most definitely, but not at the expense of signing a decent defensive mid field player.

Makes you wonder how much we are prepared to spend in this window.

As the sources are the Mail, Mirror and Star I''m not getting too confident about this signing yet.

I suspect if it is true, it will be an initial loan, potentially with a fee agreed should Norwich avoid relegation.

Personally would prefer Gayle as he could make more of an immediate impact but Bamford could be a great player for Norwich for a long time to come. Either way, if one of them just scores 1 goal that ensures Premier League survival then it is a good deal.

Why not get both in? Bamford on loan with a view to a permanent. Gayle in permanently. Grabban & Hooper already out the door and hopefully Lafferty on his way.

Mbokani, Jerome, Bamford & Gayle, with Naismith providing cover should we need it. That''s a mid table strike force IMO.

We could maybe even get Jerome out the door for 7m to Boro and I''d be happy with that.

Warming to the idea and an outright purchase would be better, unlikely as it will be.

Chelsea seem determined to hang onto the lad and are happy just to loan him out for game time and experience.... consistently.

Much rather another solid defender though.

The Mulumbu situation has put the cat amongst the pigeons somewhat especially as the window is near to closing.

Hope he stays and gets some form/fitness pronto.

I think Chelsea are more open to selling Bamford now as he is over 21 and will need to be registered in their 25 man squad from next season. Is that realistically going to happen? The reality is Bamford is probably never going to be quite the level that Chelsea will want from their striker.

His stock is pretty high, although arguably dropped from the summer so it might be a bit of ''now or never'' to getting a good fee for him. If he goes on loan to another Premier League club and does little it will shave another couple of million off his price tag.

I doubt Norwich would be able to get Gayle and Bamford as they are both looking for regular game time, neither would want to jump into a club where they are likely to be 3rd or 4th choice again. I also think it would be a waste of Norwich''s limited resources to stock themselves so deep with expensive strikers - there is little need to spend £7m/£8m and all the wages on a player who will only be needed in emergencies.

As for a new defender, Norwich have already done that business in bringing in Klose - January isn''t a great time to try and change all your defenders.

It''s a brilliant time when your defence is as woeful as ours.

I don''t think changing 75% of the defence in January would help personally.

Bassong is generally okay and the time it would take for the new players to integrate and organise themselves correctly (which is vital for defences) would mean there is little time for the new defence to really make a positive impact.

Jan Kirchoff''s debut at Sunderland shows how throwing a new defender into a struggling team is often a bad idea.

Pinto-Klose-Bassong-Olsson is good enough for what Norwich need, further upgrades should be made in the summer when a greater range of players are available and Norwich aren''t just scrapping around for the few that are available right now.

BYG that makes sense concerning the defence so let''s just hope Pinto and Klose go some way towards remedying this weak link.

I am now hoping that Mulumbu stays and performs as we know he can.

Some excellent observations there Bethnal as always and, I agree entirely with you about the defence and your stated line up.

It''s important that we get a settled back 4 in place now, with actual specialists (not Brady) playing in those positions. Bassong and Olsson are perfectly adequate for the time being in those positions and I too would be uneasy about wholesale changes to an already very unstable and shaky defence.

In the short term, I think what would be more helpful at this stage is to ensure that the defence is adequately protected to ensure that a situation like Saturday does not occur again.

Yes, the centre backs were absolutely woeful that day but they were afforded no cover by either Dorrans or Howson. Time and time again our defence pierced by a midfielder running from deep untracked (Henderson notably for the second goal).

With Mulumbu clearly not up to speed, if we could get someone like Jedinak in to provide that midfield knowhow it would be most timely.

My only disagreement would be regarding the impact Dwight Gayle would have? He''s scored once all season (a penalty), and he also appears totally unsuited to a system of 1 up front which AN prefers.

Whilst admittedly Bamford hasn''t scored (he hasn''t actually played full stop) this season, I think he''s much better suited to our style of play and we know from his time at Middlesbrough he can play up top on his own.

People will point to playoff final but he clearly wasn''t fit that day and shouldn''t have even been in consideration - that was more a reflection on how little Karanka rated Kike than anything else.

I  to would love to see Bamford and Gayle, shift out out Lafferty and possibly with Mbok going back to Kiev end season. But reality says Gayle will be a Swans player next day or two, Lafferty will still be here come tuesday, and best  can hope is Bamford on loan with a option end season  for a permanent.

And why the hell do the pinkun think that K I K E is a swear word. He''s a Middlesbrough centre forward!

Apparently Khazri is on his way to Sunderland. Good signing for them. Hopefully we can spend some money on a player like that as well. It''s good that we''ve got in Brady, Klose and Naismith but think we still need one more quality signing and then a loan, possibly Bamford.

K I K E is also a ethnic slur against Jewish people - although not really used in the UK.

I say Gayle could have a better impact as he has shown he can play and score in the Premier League. This season isn''t going well for him but he''s hardly been given the time to do much on the pitch. I think it is hard to take much from this season at Palace as none of their strikers have done anything - the way the team is set up suits goals from the wide players more.

I don''t think we would see Gayle deployed as a loan striker much, he''d probably be brought on as another option - or used more from the wings/support striker. I do wonder if Norwich are still interested in Gayle, the arrival of Jarvis and Naismith may have removed Norwich''s need for him.

Jacko, Gayle is just not a type of player who fits in with Pardews style. Look at Wickham, Chamakh, Adebayor and other Palace strikers, all well over 6 feet. Gayle is 5 ft 9in. Even before Pardew went to Palace, their previous managers never utilised Gayle either. Even so, take his55 games for Palace, work out his goals per minutes played ratio, and hes in top 5 Prem. list for strikers who score. That in a team and a system that doesnt suit his style.

This is now gathering real momentum. Our price to sign him has come in big time to 1/8, I know bookmakers are not always the best pointer but when you get to these ultra low prices they no longer want any risk as they think its happening.

I just cannot get excited about this potential loan move. I dislike loan signings unless they are with a view to a permanent signing. I also don''t see how he will fit into our style of play although we have to trust AN''s judgement on this.

Would be surprised if we don''t have an option to buy in the summer, perhaps contingent upon our survival.

Doesnt make sense to me...these rumours from Talksport about Diouf..when apparently Bamford is close to joining. But i guess the last 2 or 3 days were bound to be increased with more and more rumours, and not even a game this weekend to divert attention either..gonna be a messy weekend <.>

Im hoping they both sign, Bamford, Diouf, Mbokani, Jerome gives us a decent pool of strikers for the rest of the season.
