FA Cup

Recommended Posts

Does not help with a full round of fixtures in midweek after the 3.rd round. Just deflates the entire competition.

The FA Cup is symptomatic of BBC sports coverage. A competition that desperately clings on to past glories but almost totally irrelevant in today''s football world.

Once upon a time football fans would be glued to the radio or tv at 4.45pm on a Saturday afternoon eagerly anticipating the big cup upsets. Nowadays the BBC, (&BT) starved of live football, desperately seek a moment of ''glory'' by spreading their Cup wares from Friday night through to Sunday in an effort to replicate the excitement of the PL. There are five matches on Sunday with four different ko times!

With even lower league pitches at a good standard, watching non-league teams desperately trying to take scalps on muddy quagmires, is no longer entertaining.

The Carling Cup is now more relevant than the FA Cup. Midweek matches, no replays, and no disruption to the only competitions the clubs really care about, the PL and the Championship.

The FA Cup has become ''all about its history'', it is merely an incumbency on many of the football clubs today, and seemingly not a prize worth chasing.

A very healthy crowd at Stamford Bridge for the FA Cup tie Chelsea against lowly Scunthorpe.......and the game is televised but the ground is more or less full......

Good to see that even those who scorn the FA Cup - there are those that still enjoy it......

As it is the only home trophy Chelsea have any chance of winning this season, they will undoubtedly stand alone amongst PL teams and play their strongest team in every round they play in.

The supporters will turn up in hope and expectation.

it seems irrelevant which league we are in we will play a weakened team; if in the prem the focus is on staying there and if in champs the priority will always be on bouncing back...

No reason why we can go for both - if we could make it to februarys games (extreem heights of round 5) that would be progress and a minimum of 2 and max of 5 extra games - would it really hurt the squads chances to go for that?

I would say the luxury of an easy draw makes run easier - but we have had those and failed...

2 of my top 10 memories are being at both losing FA cup semi finals in my lifetime, a final a real history would be better than another run of the mill premier league point.

And as deprioritising one FA Cup tie can only affect the

next game does that make a draw at Stoke a failure - if not why not - we are only doing it for money aka points so if we dont get one what was the benefit?

Of the 30 clubs that have been relegated from the PL over the last 10 years - 13 went out of the FA Cup in round 37 went out in round 44 went out in round 5Only 3 teams have made it into round 6 or furtherSo 66% of clubs relegated never made it past round 4.So we can deduct Losing in the early stages of the FA Cup doesn''t help survival or alternatively, if you''re crap in the FA Cup then you are also likely to be crap in the PL.

Where on earth did you find those stats MP? And what happened to the other three clubs? Are there stats for the clubs who finished 15th, 16th & 17th for comparison?

There will only ever be one winner in the FA Cup this and every season.

In the Premier League, and particularly this year onwards, there will be seventeen ''winners''. The odds are far more favourable which makes the PL of far greater importance.

The PL''s midweek matches this season that follow the FA Cup third round games merely emphasise the irrelevance the cup is to many clubs in this day and age.

Safe to say that Norwich''s win at Wembley last year in the play-off final was financially more lucrative and equally as enjoyable as any FA Cup final appearance/win could possibly produce over the next few years.

Trouble is it can easily affect more than one game; team just building momentum and starting to put together a consistent run of good-level performances loses focus owing to "irrelevant" cup game then can''t regain momentum/performance, loses next league game against mid-table side and worse still also the next one against lower end rivals ..............
Fortunately for discussion forums no-one posting will ever be able to say for certain that results would have gone better with a different approach to that cup game!

Incorrectible!

If Wes doesn''t play versus Man City, then he doesn''t get tired / injured. Fact.

He may or may not have got injured, however, would he be at his best versus Bournemouth had he played twice that week already?

Funny how views change depending on what our club does. The clapper default is always to support. The crapper default is always to whinge and whine. At least I know what I am[;)]

My views change depending on (a) the competition and (b) the current circumstances. The Carabao Cup is not the FA Cup and if this season is going to be a success then that means doing everything possible to get promotion and not getting to round 4 of a joke competition.

We''ve not made it past the 5th round since we made the semi final in 1992 and we''ve only got beyond the 3rd round 7 times during that 25 year period.

Pretty pathetic really.

Unbelievable given the number of players we have that they cannot play 2 games a week.

Got to feel sorry for them, lucky they were not playing with the leather ball on a ploughed field like in the 60''s

I''d happily play 90 minutes every day for the amount of money they get paid a week...
